  1. This is my second attempt at painting the body. I think I just overdid it the first time around. The paint is satin finish with a couple of coats of Future. It still has to be polished and waxed. I'm just guessing at how much clear coat it has to have before polishing. The fender script and most other details have been smoothed down and will be replaced with PE details. I plan to use metal foil for the side trim.
  2. I've finally worked up the courage to post some pics. Please keep in mind that this is my first serious attempt. Kit is the Monogram #2291. Turned out to be an interesting choice for for my first try, as it has a number of problems. Had I know before hand I would not have bought it, but it's been good experience for me. Below are pics of the many seam lines I had to remove. If you check the pics of the painted body further on, I think I managed to do a fair job smoothing them down. The headlight housing fit was also quite poor but I was able to get a lot of improvement there. So far I'm mostly pleased with the way it's going. I'm way more confident now that I've been able to solved a number of problems.
  3. I've also used Super Clean for removing chrome and it works great, even on complex parts.
  4. Don't know about decals, but you could check on modelcargarage.com for a photo etched detail kit. I know they have them for several years of GTO's. I got one for a '53 Corvette I'm working on and it's very well done. It includes the "Chevrolet" script lettering for the front fenders as well as lots of other stuff. The detail is amazing. These are TINY parts and you'll need very good eyeballs and/or a good magnifier to work with them. Chris Chapman has a very good Youtube video with tips on working with PE parts.
  5. Do the Campbell Hausefeld compressors come with whatever adapters are needed to connect to an airbrush?
  6. After reading your previous comment about the headlight buckets I tested them. Boy, you weren't kidding about the fit being terrible. Enlarging the buckets by sanding helped a great deal. They're probably about as good as they're going to get.
  7. After scraping, puttying, sanding and priming. Hardly perfect, but much better than I'd hoped. So far this model has been an excellent learning experience.
  8. Finished off that piece, spraying the black paint using an El Cheapo no-name airbrush that came with the compressor. Also worked fine and looks good to me. On the other hand, a second El Cheapo I have didn't work very well.
  9. I have one of these... http://www.tcpglobal.com/MASS622-SET.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjwxd6oBRCRoMrWmLOCvI4BEiQAYyZdkc1vJFc1QultP8HcuIpCJ6KDKgRnSbOKmLRHAOA-fmwaAn_88P8HAQ#.VRh6efnF_Cs It's my first airbrush, so I don't know how it compares with others. It seems fine to me. I'm using acrylic paints. Attached is a pic of a piece I just sprayed. That's a coat of primer and two coats of paint. It looks nice and even and the details show nicely. I'm sure I'd be just as happy with an airbrush costing several hundred dollars, if I could spend that kind of money. As Steve says, clean religiously, if not more so. I just used Vallejo sprayable acrylic primer for the first time, and the stuff works as well as airbrush cement as it does as primer.
  10. Thanks, Gerry. I already have their contact info.
  11. Hello John and Richard. John, I no longer have a Facebook account and can't access your page. Richard, I'm originally from Queens and lived on Long Island during the 1970's. East Setauket, Port Jefferson Station, Comak. My first steady job was driving a school bus for the Three Village school district.
  12. I'm no expert. This is my first airbrush, but so far I'm very pleased with it. I'm using the. I feel that I have good control over the air/paint mixture, the results are fine, and it's been easy to clean. It would probably be considered "too cheap" by the pros here, and maybe time will prove them right. I can't spend a lot of money...if someone wants to buy me an expensive airbrush they're welcome to do so. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BGL5SQ8/ref=pe_385040_127541860_TE_3p_dp_1 I bought the compressor show in the pic, though not that brand. It seems to be sold by pretty much everyone under different brand names. I'm also happy with it. I have the pressure set to 20psi and that's working fine. Pressure seems steady. Have fun.
  13. Well I certainly can't complain about the lack of response on this forum. Bill, as far as I can see in photos of the 1:1 there are no seam lines. Cameron, you're right about this kit. If I'd know how many problems it had I wouldn't have bought it. But now that I have it I'm taking it as an opportunity to start developing some skills. Once I finish this one the others will probably seem easy. I'm going to try the Tamiya primer and will probably pick up some from Home Depot as well so I can compare them. Looks like there's a Sally's right just a few stores down from the Joanne's that I go to.
  14. I'm still looking for suitable emery boards. In the meantime rolled up sandpaper is working pretty well. I think I've done about as much as I can with scraping and sanding. Polishing next. Turns out this model has more serious problems than just seam lines. Some of the body parts aren't shaped quite right. Looks like it fits together OK, but it's probably going to look a bit "off." Oh well...I'm getting some good practice.
  15. Can't believe I'm talking to a celebrity. Thanks for all the great videos.
  16. A great place to buy various tools is http://www.sciplus.com/. The headband magnifiers I got from them were half the price I could find them anywhere else. They have lots of tweezers, files, etc. I've been buying stuff from them for years and they are very reliable. If you don't like something you can return it.
  17. Is the the ratio you use when mixing acrylic paint with windshield washer fluid?
  18. I'm also starting out. There are tons of great videos on Youtube that show what kinds of tools you'll need and how to glue, paint, etc. I found them very helpful.
  19. I have to read up on primers and decide which kind to get. I'm still waiting for my airbrushes and am not ready to paint yet anyway.
