60's styled 2005 "RETRO-VETTE" COUPE
E St. Kruiser50 replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yeah Peter, I kinda like the "GRINCHY / MAKO-SHARKEY" look -
WOW PLUM YOU DID GREAT MY FRIEND Your "hydraulic ram system" looks awesome. That's exciting to see you take a risk and have it work. VERY, VERY KOOOOL!!! BTW Tail lights look great IMHO - good choice. I have a VEWY SEEKWATIVE HINT for you. If you bend the sliding pin ever so slightly in the right place, it create's the right amount of "Friction", so your hood is "Poseable" in any position, without a brace to hold it up . Worked great on the "Retro-Vette". Do it first on a sample piece to experiment with. It doesn't take much, and it'll drive "Your Bud's" crazy trying to figure it out , and they'll love it. Keep the pic's coming. Love it - dave

Great post Art I enjoyed reading it all . Sounds like you know these guy's from the past pretty well, and definetlty have a certain mind set about how far to go with this hobby. ME!! I'm a different kinda animal than the guy's from the past, and so are many other's here, and the hobby and the builder's have their sight's on the future. I believe the level of this hobby will be unrecognizeble, in ten years as more and more guy's here step it up, to have more fun and enjoy what we do, more with new technology. Most of us enjoy a good challange, and the adventure of new horizon's, even if these are nothing more than plastic toyz, most of us are just little kid's at heart . For me, I want more accuracy, precision, technology and art - NO ART, NOT YOU This is a very inexpensive hobby, even if you invest in some high end equipment, most hobbies are much more expensive and not nearly as much fun, to me - LOL. I personally never want to stop growing, learning and reaching out to new adventure's. Over the years I have invested heavily in multiple chrome systems, multiple urethane paint systems, a full HOK supply of paints, a full machine shop, a walk in spray booth that is heated, lit, and ventilated, etc, etc - well, you get the idea. Some of us are just nut's enough to spend whatever it takes to "LIVE ON THE EDGE AND HAVE FUN WITH NO BOUNDARIES OR RESTRICTIONS BY OTHER'S - EEEEEHAH" . WE ONLY DO THIS LIFE THING ONCE, SO WE MIGHT AS WELL ENJOY THE RIDE!! I have a passion for life and living, and I plan on going out in a blaze of CHROME, PEARLS, METALFLAKES, and BEAUTIFULLY MACHINED PARTS - LOL . See ya'll - dave

Thanks everyone This is "Spot-on" to the REAL YELLOW . Even brighter than the other pic's. A rich, bright pearl yellow - PUT ON THE SHADES . The engine area is coming along pretty good, and will be pretty heavily detailed. This is just mocked up to give an idea of the finished product. Windshield frame and cowl will be flat black. Here's more pic's. I like these better - dave This one you can see pearl highlight's. -

Hi all Well, the ol' Gal is painted and got the body mostly rubbed out, but need to do the finishin' touches, and then I'll do the door's and such. Took 8 hour's to paint this thing yesterday, and got the rubbin; started early, as I was excited to see it "SHINEY" . Paint really turned out nice with nothin' to do extra, 'least as far as I can tell . , so I'ma happy camper . Used the old camera for these pic's, as the new one seemed to wash out the color. Have to check the manual and change the setting. Here's a couple of pic's - dave -
Bye the way I was a machinist/ tool maker for 20 year's. All the basic extra's you will need like collet's, cutter's, lathe set up tools, quick change if you like, machinist tool box, calipers, and micrometers for measuring, height gauge, granite lay-out table, angle blocks, clamps several different vises, rotary table and accessories, different size chucks for your lathe, etc, etc, etc, can add an extra $2000 or more, plus about $1500 for a new computor, AND THEN YOUR MACHINE'S, and setting up a space where they can be used, ALL COST MONEY!!!. Also you'll need a drill press and a bench-top band saw, and bench grinder for making and sharpening your different cutter's for the lathe, for cutting all your metals and drilling in them. Hope this doesn't over-whelm you, but it's better for you and other's here to know all this stuff before you get buried in it, and can't afford to move forward . Remember - MACHINING ISN'T AN INSTANT "PLUG- PLAY" LIKE A NINTENDO OR GAMEBOY , but it sure can be done, and be rewarding and enjoyable, if you have the patience, and are willing to accept a learning curve.

Hi Jody Sounds like what your looking for is what I have a goal for in a few years, but want to get what I have up and running, upgraded a bit with a Digital read Out System, afew more cutting tools and attachment, and different screw system for the cross-feed on my milling machine. I'm a little rusty and need to get my skills and "Rythem" functioning properly again after a few years of "Retirement" . The system I have in mind is a table-top, 4 axis CNC Machining Center, for about "5 Grand" with the software, but you have to supply the computor extra. If you really want to step up, there are CNC Lazer Tracking Systems that give feed-back to the computor as it follows the machining operation, and makes any micro adjustments as it machines. Pretty cool. Table top also. Both take up about an 18"X24" space and are extremely accurate, but no way close to being for a "Novis", as you need basic and advanced machining skill and understanding of metal processing, and proper handling, true even with the basic machines you are considering. No matter what you choose as your first machines, you, or anyone, deciding to buy machinery, should definetly consider including in their finances and time schedule, a clas or two on maching basics and safety, because these are all dangerous pieces of equipment, even the small one's, and can cause severe damage to any part of your body by inadvertantly and unknowingly doing something that will harm you or someone to near to what you are doing . It happens quite often. Anyway, good luck on findind what you're looking for - dave

Believe it or not, some of the first vehicles ever, were electric . Isn't it odd that we have gone full circle in the last 100 years of auto developement . Back in the mid-60's Buick had a contract to sell pyramid shaped production electric two seat vehicles. Never saw one on the street. Then noteable Honda, produced it's first production electric car, back in the late 90's. Around 1965 a buddy of mine and a machinist, bought an old Fiat 600, a PEANUT CAR , we called it. He tore out the engine, and made an adaptor plate for mounting a 10 HP electric motor. We then tore out the back seat, and filled the area with a dozen large car batteries. He installed a amp meter on the dash, and as he shifted he could monitor the amount of juice being used, and he used a reostate shifter to reduce the amount of amps being used as the car increased momentum. It helped increase battery life, and could drive around 40 miles on a charge. Very cool to ride in and pretty "Spunky". Weird at stop-lights, as nothing was running and there was an eery silence, and "FEELING OF BEING PARKED .

Hey all How's everyone?? Well here I go sticking my neck out on this , but haven't heard a thing from anyone here on this topic, of EXCESSIVE KIT AND SUPPLIES price increase's which surprises me. Either you're afraid to say something or you agree with the increase's I'd like to begin by qualifying my Title and Description, and my posting here on this topic, as not being a RANT or RAVE, and being in the wrong posting section. I'll be expressing an opinion here, as respectfully as I can, as I have appreciated and supported the manufacturers and suppliers of hobby kit's and supplies for nearly 60 years, both in my money, activities, time, and my career, and thus feel I have a right, and a responsibility, to express my opinions here, either positive or critical on this topic, to help keep this hobby alive, positive and affordable. To begin with IMHO, I believe these price increases are unprecedented, excessive, uncalled for, and realistically unjustifiable, especially with the economy in turbulant chaos. To me, this just adds in it's own small way, to the slow economic recovery, because of blatant greed IMHO, in what I see as a rather healthy small hobby community, and so to me any excusses from anyone here who is a part of the manufacturing community, who monitors these sites, and post rarely except to defend their posistion, wont be accepted as anything but excusses and defenses for companies who have sent all these molds to "China", and have taken all those jobs from this country that could have stayed here, and then somehow claim that oil prices have skyrocketted, and that shipping prices have gone threw the roof, when manufacturing and jobs could have stayed here, and shipping prices that are much lower here could have more than off-set these costs, that they now want us to subsidise by excessive price incresse's . Go figure!! Our own new president, whether you like him or not, said we all need to sacrifice somewhat to help the recovery. I myself have agreed with this mind-set, and have stepped up and spent more than usual, in several area's of my life to do my small part, especially now when I see noticible DECREASES in the prices of certain basic necessisities, like gas, clothing, and food, at least in my area. I have begun my own personal boycott of these 28 - 32% price increase in model kit's and will not buy any new kit releases in the forseeable future. In several articles, just recently, we were reassured, because of concerns, that the new release kit prices would be kept reasonable and not approach the MODEL KING atmospher. Well, here we are folks!! To me, it seems that someone thinks we have a short memory, and that we see these kit's as a basic need such as food and so forth, and the kits and supplies can't be done without - for me WRONG. It's not just the $$$$$, but the SLAP IN THE FACE . Now I realize that a few "LONG-WINDERS" who post here regularly, will go on and on (Like I have here ), and PROBOSQUILATE, and try to impress us with their reteric, on the "Values" of supporting the hobby, by being "RESCUER'S and "ENABLERS" with our $$$$$'s, supporting a manufacturing community that has betrayed us, and our economy, IMHO, and expected us to stay in DENIAL, as jobs dissappear, and so do our $$$$ to another country. PLEASE DON'T BUY IT. Thanks for reading, and any respectfull response and critisism's gratefully accepted - dave

Hey GB Yeah, been havin' way too much fun, but I love it . Been a "PLASTIC PURIST all my life, so it took a while to convince myself to do some metal stuff like some other's. Coupla years ago I bought all this stuff in the pic's I'm posting, to sorta step up my game at some point, but got involved in my chrome system, and that took a couple of year's to sort out and perfect, so the plan is to fire up this stuff and start "Turning Some "Cranks" later this summer, and get back into the machining and tool making that I loved so much, for so many years. Gonna be good to get back some of those ol' "Feel Good's" Anyhow, here's my "Little Machine Shop" - dave -

Hi Clay The first pic is of the entire car ready for primer, the second pic is of all the part's, plus the rear end from a donor kit that I'll be using as a test sample for each stage of painting, so I don't mess up. Good questions. I can see where the pic's could be confusing . Thanks for asking - dave -

I made a mistake the first time and deleted this post Well, got this thing all primered and ready to go . As you can see in the first pic's it take's a lot of paint's and supplies to do this, not to mention safety, as you can see a face respirator. Gotta use that . Tomorrow I'll be sanding and doing touch up work if necessary, and mixing the pearl a little light, so I can sneek up on what I need, as I test it on the sample piece of a Corvette rear section. May take a day or two. When it looks right, the next day I will begin the painting process, which take's about a better part of half a day. I'll be shooting 3 coats each of white, yellow, pearl and finally the catalized clear. That's 12 coat's, 15 minute's apart. Once ya start you can't quit. 44 degree's outside the high, so good thing I got a walk-in spray booth that's heated, lit, and ventilated. Shot all this at 80 degree's. Should be Wednesday or thursday when it's painted, and then the next day I rub out all the pieces. Get's a little intense for a few days . Then I'll probably lay off this thing 'till some time next week and go play at something else. Got more than one life ya know . Anyhow here's some pic's - dave
