The Corvair Topic
stavanzer replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I am posting this on the Corvair thread, but it may belong in hints. I have the Newest Issue of the 'Vair kit, and an older issue of the Sunbeam Tiger kit. I was trying to put some Minilite wheels on the Corvair. I can tell you that regardless of the real One-to-One rim sizes, the ones in the kits are wildly mismatched. The Minilites in the Tiger are huge compared to the smaller Astro's in the Corvair. So, No Joy on the swap. However, parts hoarding does sometimes payoff. Remember the Minilite Rims in the Revell '67 Camaro last year? the ones everybody loved to hate due to being "Undersized"? Well, they fit the larger set of tires from the newest Corvair kit, with just the slightest bit of fudging. They are at least 1/8" smaller in diameter than the Minilites in the Tiger. They may be too small for the Camaro, but I think they'll fit just fine in either the Corvair or the Tiger. So, Small they may be, but perfect for smaller cars they are. Master Yoda. -
I think it has little bitty tail-lights! Are the '50 :Pontiac tail-lights beloved of Rodders smaller?
-
Ah, that what I wanted to know. I wish Revell had reused the Coupe front end, instead of the stock.
-
Another question about the new '48 Ford Kit. Is the Nose/Grille section in pieces like the Chopped coupe? Pieces # 310-313, to allow for the custom grilles, or is it the stock only design as used in the '48 Woody?
-
Thanks, Dave. Nothing beats having the real thing in front of you when it comes to shape issues. (Firewalls are a different horse, of course)
-
Yeah, it was, but it's back up over $50.00 at the online places that even stock it. Be nice to have it with the new "Round2" treatment. Expanded decals and all that......
-
Thanks, Mark. That is what I'd thought might be the case. I see that the Squad Rod Nova is in the line up as well. I wonder what we have to do the get "Smokey, the Convoy Chaser" Dodge Dart/Duster back? That would complete the Trio. Heck, that would make a great 3 kit gift pack, for Christmas.

Don, What are the engine build options? As I remember, these MPC kits did not have much of a "Hop Up" option, but there was always a second way to finish the engine, other than stock. Looking at the chrome tree, I think I see a Twin Carb manifold but I can't be certain. This new Round2 plating is so smooth and shiny that it can be hard to see detail without getting close. Mynd You, I really like the new chrome. So much better than the original stuff. Thanks, Alan

Pickedup sme kits today
stavanzer replied to JUNK-MAN's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice Find. That Laser Vette is a nice bit of 1980's nostalgia. -
Thanks, Don. I'll be getting one of these, but the Mod Rod Model A has a higher priority on my "Gotta Have" list. The pics show about what I'd expected. Glad to have this one back.

Sand-T That is probably the one, I'm thinking of. Thanks.

The kit you want is the AMT "Sand Hog". The directions are up at Drastic Plastic. It was one of three Dune Buggies they did. One other one was the "Sand Bagger, Dune Dragster" IIRC. Tim Boyd or Dennis Doty did an article about the three kits in SAE 25-30 years ago. The kits came from the dark days on the 1970's when AMT was trying to maximize the revenue from their tooling, without spending any more money on new tooling. So the mix & match Sand Buggies were born. Some of the Oddball Funny Cars seem to come from this same era. Adapt an already tooled body to an already tooled chassis, and Voila, brand new kit. Just throw in some new decals and they were good to go. Tim Boyd may be able to shed more light on these. I have the article from SAE about the Dune Buggies, but it has been years since I read it. My memory may be playing tricks on me. I'd thought that the instruction sheets for all three Buggies were at the Drastic Plastic site, but further searching shows that I am mistaken. I see only the Sand Hog and the Sand Bagger. Alan

Annual '65 Ford Fairlane 500 # 5165-150
stavanzer replied to Timok1's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Not sure how old you are Tim, but those molds were most likely destroyed while you were in diapers. Those kits were just 'last years junk' to AMT at the time, and the Modified Stockers were a last ditch attempt to get more revenue out of what were at the time, useless tooling. -
Yeah, the Whiskey is missing in mine. So is the Cookies & Cream Ice Cream. (or is that an Aftermarket Resin Upgrade?)
-
Great Save on a very neat kit. Inspires me to start on mine. I've had a Stock Phaeton in the planning stages for about 6 years now. I need to move it up in the To-Do list after seeing this.
-
Man, the Phaeton (Touring Car) is hands down my favorite old car body style. I'll be watching this build. My Dad has a 1922 Buick 9 passenger Touring, that needs to be restored. It has been in his family since before WW2. Thus my love for Touring Cars. Was the resin body pricey?

Flashback 1976 - MPC '76 Monza 2 + 2
stavanzer replied to Erik Smith's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Dave Darby, that little Monza rocks! Good Luck on finding a hood and scoop. Ace, you are so right. Ev en the lousy 1980's kits could make for some fun times. Wish I could still build that way. But, I've grown upo, and just throwing together a kit, is almost impossible now. The A.M.S. gets ahold on you, and it is difficult to do more than one thing at a time. -
Flashback 1976 - MPC '76 Monza 2 + 2
stavanzer replied to Erik Smith's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I want the Awful Revell version of this car. Not because it is a great kit, but because it brings back pleasant memories, of the time I could just build a kit, Spray Paint it in the back yard, and call it done. Simpler Times, Simpler Pleasures. My last look at the auction site showed NO Revell Monza's that were not Funny Cars. Guess, I'll have to search for them over the long haul. -
Wow! Great Job! I am really happy with these new Revell Kits. I'll use a WW2 Navy Blue on mine when I build it.

Monogram '57 Del Rio Ranch Wagon has fenderwell cut-outs
stavanzer replied to Matt T.'s topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Well, after looking at the Pics posted here, it is easy to see that Revell had the Gasser planned for the Wagon, from inception. Nice to see how the inner fenders will need to be trimmed for a Sedan Gasser, though. I'm really looking forward to seeing exactly What Engine options are in the Gasser Wagon kit. I need to start building these Revell Fords. -
Already read the review once. I'll re-read it often in the next few months. I've been waiting for this kit to come out. I have a Nailhead powered High Boy Coupe planned already. But that skeleton interior looks mighty persuasive. Maybe, I'd better buy Two kits. LOL (like any of us are gonna stop at Two of these kits?) The '29 and this new '30 are a license to print money for Revell. I know these kits are not for everyone, but those that do like them, will like them in Case Lot quantities. For you Rep-Stock guys, you finally got your Stock '48 Ford Coupe. Keep Rocking Revell!
