New member..with questions.
m408 replied to cj112674's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A couple of tips from a guy who has been back for several months after a 40 year lay off. 1- Don't even try to do what these guys do. They have been doing it for years. I tried to match their skills right away and got so discouraged that I almost quit again. Take baby steps. Start with something simple that, when completed, will want you to try the next step. 2- ASK QUESTIONS. On this forum, you will find, that each and everyone here, regardless of skill level, will be more than willing to help solve a problem, or steer you in the right direction. 3- Go to Amazon our some other source and buy "Building and Detailing Scale Model Cars", buy Pat Covert. Everything from basic tool recommendations, painting basics, to detailing. 4- #2 again. -
My suggestion for the truck was not based on a model that I have built, just how we did it when I was drag racing back in the day. Try "SoCalCarCulture Model Car Resources". It has a listing of companies that handle just about anything that you might need.

I use a Silver leafing pen by KRYLON, found at any craft store. Quick, easy, and cheap. Of course, it doesn't compare to a re chroming job, or foiling, but works well for my level of building expectations.

Welcome Dave, You will find here, not only some of the elite builders in the world, but a bunch of guys who are more than happy to share their tips and ideas with you. Don't be shy about asking for help. Post your work. It will be received with open arms.

Since you already have the trailer, any pick up with a hitch will do. Just need a bed big enough to hold a few gallons of high octane aircraft fuel, tool box, coil, spare battery, misc ignition parts, belts, duct tape, and several sets off fresh plugs. Been there and done that.

Jeff, It's gonna be somewhere. Try TNT or Speed or one of your local channels. -
Hey Dave, very nice. As to the exhaust, tell them that the rears were through mufflers for cruising around town and the side pipes were actually straight throughs with a cut out butterfly valve for "getting it on". We did that a lot in the 60s.

Need ideas for a nice home-built spray booth
m408 replied to abedooley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I guess it all depends where you are painting Jim. My "work shop" is in a second bedroom converted into a den/office/ workshop in my town house. Dirt and dust are just typical for a house and I have not seen any problems so far. -
Need ideas for a nice home-built spray booth

I can only offer a couple of features that I really like about my Pace booth that you might want to consider in your design. 1- It has a rear draw exhaust which not only keeps fumes and over spray out of the room, but seems to help disperse the paint toward the parts I'm painting. 2- It uses a standard 12x24x1 filter. Easy to find at any OSH, Home Depot, etc... and very inexpensive. 3- Single overhead standard light bulb. Again, easy to find and inexpensive. -
I'm trying to ramp up my detailing skills and at the same time venture into some minimal scratch building. I need some help on scale sizing. Wire gauges for: Plug wires Battery wires Starter wires Misc, lights, alternator, etc... Fuel lines Brake lines Dimensions for: Coils Voltage regulators And any other items that a beginner might try.

Dollar Store has a packet of 5 different sizes and grits with 6-8 sticks each. No real fine grits but sure cost effective for the rough stuff.

I'm a sports nut. Some sports are great on TV and some are great on radio. To me, baseball is one of them which is great on radio. My most enjoyable time on any given day, or night, is working on one of my projects while listening to a Giants game. If my team wins, I can really screw something up on my build and not care that much. Tomorrow will be another game and rework time.

Thanks all, Just placed an order with Chris for some distributers and various hook up wires and plumbing parts. I have done buissness with him in the past. His work is nice, prices good, delivery is prompt, and support excellent.

Cars for Kids...Thank you.
m408 replied to Rachel_B's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Rachel posted a photo of a boy getting one of my cars, and thanking me, (see thanks Milt on this forum). Another to be given out next week. She also requested no more cars be sent her way. Satisfied with the gold mine that she had received from me and glad to count her profit? I think not. Disappointed that some thought that her trying to cheer up some kids was considered a scam? You bet. -
Shoot, if I could do all that, I wouldn't be looking for pre made ones.

Checked out his web site and couldn't get any pricing info.

Thanks for the photo Rachel. The smile on his face more than makes up for any grief that I may have taken. Keep caring for the kids, Milt

Cars for Kids...Thank you.

I spoke to Carl a week or so ago. He had received my two cars and told me that Rachel was going to give them away at a picnic. I suggested that posted photos of the kids and parents getting them would go a long way toward validation. He was going out of town that weekend and was leaving his camera with Rachel. Hopefully she got the photos and, with Carl, will figure out how to post them. Time will tell. -
Nice Mike, How did you attach the second carb line?
-
Thanks all. I have purchased from Chris in the past, and agree. Good prices, nice products, and exceptional service. Just couldn't remember where I saw them. Going there now.
-
They are nice Clay, Raul gave me one also at our get together. I have not had good luck with ebay. I guess I just don't understand it. But thanks for the input.
-
Can't remember where I found them. Help?

Looking for advice on painting headlights
m408 replied to abedooley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
"The Detailer" makes a blue wash which might work on the buckets. It's water based so no problem if it doesn't give you the effect that you want. It also takes well to multiple coats to vary the depth of look. -
Just recently had to strip a bad paint job. Did the strip and rinse. In a hurry, as always to re paint, I put the cleaned parts in my dehydrator for a quick dry. When dry, I re primed. The parts weren't hot, but warm and the paint seemed to adhere smoother. Just my imagination, or is warm plastic more receptive to paint?
