  1. Mike, What do you mean by "let it flash"?

Very nice Brendan. After seeing some of your other work, I'm not at all surprised, but, in only three days? Wow. A couple of quick questions, if you don't mind. Why several thin primer coats? And do you sand in between coats? Could a thin primer be made by decanting and then thinning?
  3. Kevin, come on up. Tell me where I can find one of your selected bribes, and I'll have it waiting for you.
  4. Nick, what I meant was, building a NASCAR from frame up, adding suspension parts, safety cages, cooling ducting, dual ignition boxes, fuel cells, etc... gave me a whole new perspective on the quality and of course the cost involved in these cars. As for your comments about "walking sponsors", I take exception. Each and every winner of any kind of race will spend a whole lot of time plugging his/her car and sponsors. That's one way of staying in buisness. "Real race cars"? Try building something that can turn 8000 rpms for 400 miles, trade paint at 180 mph, and finish. And, if you don't like watching it, you have options. Turn it off, change channels, or flush your skittles and watch them.
  5. Hey Bill, Just a quick word about NASCAR. A few months ago, I built the Dale E sr kit for a buddy of mine. He is an old time racer. The build was really fun. Just like building a real race car. Detailed roll bar cage, suspension, ducting to brakes and coolers etc... If you enjoy, at all, NASCAR racing on TV, build one. Will give you a whole new perspective on the cars. But, that being said, it's the only one that I have built. Now days, due to regulations, they are all just about the same with different decals.
  6. O.K. when someone says "road racer", my mind goes to a trim young woman in short shorts with a cut off tee shirt jogging by. Oops different forum. Since I'm in the process of building a 1/16 31 Ford pick up, "B" day present from my grand kids, I suggest "trucks" as the theme. Stock, custom, drag, whatever. What do you guys think? I know Raul, you already have show winners completed, but you would have to build a new one.
  7. Shoot Curt, I should have picked more donks at big lots when they were on close out. But I'm game if that's what you guys want to do.
  8. Kevin, I'm not going to ask a dozen NorCal guys to travel to SoCal. You talk about gas $s, multiply it be 12. If you can make it, and I hope that you do, pizza is on me if you can get the "donk" that Raul sent you built. With 3 months planning, maybe Anthony can make it and give you a ride.
  9. Don't mind at all George. Wish you could join us. But "cars of our youth"? I don't know how to wire a horse. Anyone got lowering blocks for a surrey?
  10. I know that some have used pen parts for velocity stacks and exhaust tips. Some electronics have multi color wires that could be used. I don't do that much detailing, so have not tried any of the above. Closest I have come is using sewing pins for chrome dash knobs and tarp snaps.
  11. Hey guys, I had a ball at our last get together. Anyone up for another one? Any thoughts as to when? I'm thinking maybe late July or early August. Would give everyone 3 months to make building and travel plans. How about a "theme"? Maybe a specific year or car type? Don't want to make this a big deal, but a common subject might be fun to see different interpretations. Anyhow, if you guys want to do it again, let me know and I'll get it going.
  12. Heck Darrell, if it's every day stuff, don't worry about it. "Every day" stuff is always there.
  13. Thanks guys, The Black & Decker, I know, I called it a "Dexter", is going to the garage as suggested. I will look for a battery operated Dremel.
  14. Well, being a grumpy old man who remembers WWII, and have never been accused of being "politically correct", I'll say it. Only a Japanese company would put out a piece of ###### like that without giving it a second thought.
  15. I think that if you do a "search" (at the top header on this page) you will find some info. Maybe not the whole answer, but a start.
  16. I have used a thin layer of vasoline on the part that I wanted to use as a "mold".
  17. Great job. I'm gonna try a bike one of these days. Only hope that it comes out half as good as yours.
  18. In scanning several threads on the forum, I find one person using 11 different kits to build one car. Another spending around $40.00 for a set of rims. Resin engines at $20.00 each. Multiple PE kits for a bunch of bucks. Same with special metalized paints. Now, I confess, I did invest in a food dehydrator because I hated to watch paint dry. And yes, I did follow the advice of many here and purchased a paint booth instead of doing my spray painting in a closet. These will be pro rated over many builds. But my question is...How much is the cost of your builds? I understand that if you are building for a judged contest you would be inclined to spend the big bucks. But, how about your average build, done just for fun? My budget: Kit $15.00 to $18.00 (cheaper if I can find one on sale). Primer/paint $10.00 (if I use the small expensive cans, less if I use the big cans) Glue, detail brush paint, thinner, etc.. $5.00 Total: About $30.00 I would be interested in knowing just how much you guys spend to complete some of the great works that I see posted here.
  19. My two cents. I couldn't care less about some NBA player getting a 4000 amp woofer system installed in his Hummer. I don't care if contestant "A", "B", or "C" can guess the time that some bracket racer can get through the traps. I'm not interested in how many "lengths" a guy gets on Pinks. However, I love dirt track racing, did some in my youth. Don't care if it is bikes, midgets, modified, or late model stocks. If it's on dirt and they only turn left, I'm watching. Speed channel has a bunch of these events so I'll continue watching. The other junk, I just change channels.
  20. Thanks Matt, Just what I needed. I've got a bunch of plastic spoons to experiment with. Will try a bunch of different bases etc...
  21. Thanks for the reply Jody. Very nice stuff. I'll keep checking your site.
  22. I got a 1/16 scale 31A pick up from one of my grand kids for my "B" day. It is stock, 4 banger and all. I want to "jazz" it up just a little with either a candy or pearl paint job. Can anyone lead me through the paint process? Rattle can products prefered.
  23. One of my grandkids got me a 1/16 scale stock Ford 31A pick up kit by Minicraft for my "B"day. I would like to build it "stock", 4 banger and all, but would like to trick it up just a little. I know that there is a whole lot of after market stuff available for 1/24 scale, but how about 1/16? All help and any links will be appreciated.
  24. I've got a Black and Dexter hand tool. I want it to run slower than the mega RPMs. A couple of questions. 1- Can I use a Dremel foot control to reduce the speed on my B&D? 2- If so, how slow can I dial it down?
  25. Couldn't the kit "glass" be used to form a clay female mold? That could then be used to form a plaster buck which could be left stock or "chopped". Not having worked with vacuum forming, I'm sure that it couldn't be that straight forward, but might be worth a try.
