Hi Bill, Tried to get some parafilm m at my LHS. They hadn't heard of it. I found it at Micro-Mark. Also a great "how to" article by Dave Aungst at HyperScale.com.
-
While getting some advice on my question on "air brush practice", parafilm m was recommended. No one at my LHS had any idea what it was, so I Googled it. Seems that it was invented for the medical field to seal test tubes without leaving any residue. I then found it for sale at Micro-Mark as well as a great "How to" by Dave Aungst on HyperScale.com. This might be the "Future of masking products. Don't know, but I ordered some. Just thought that I would pass this on.

I've seen it used on lettering also. Any special tips for that?

About to try my first BMF job. Some will be on paint with Future coat. Some will be on "as is" kit plastic. All tips are appreciated.

Thanks Bill.

Is the idea of keeping thinner on all the time related to the fumes? If so, wont that effect any neoprene parts?
-
Thanks Curt, Gonna be a new experiance and fun. Can't believe the response to the get together. Guys comming from miles around. Now if I can only get some local interest. Milt

Thanks Luis, Never heard of createx or faskcolor. Where are they available? Tamiya has a bunch of acrylics. Same water clean up?

Thanks Bill, nice tips. I think that it will be a lot of fun when I get it figured out. I can see where the #5 would be the choice for bodies, but just how fine can you get the #1? I try to do two tone interiors with a tiny brush and still can't get them decent. Tried masking etc... Still no luck. Will a #1 get that fine?

Kids got me a paasche VL air brush set and D500 compressor for my "B" day in February. I'm now ready to try to figure it out. I've got the lesson booklet that came with it along with three different needle and tip combinations. I want to go through the lesson book to see just what does what, but don't want to go through a big cleaning routine every few minutes. My first thought was to shoot food coloring. I know, not like real paint, but easy clean up by just running water through the system. Not at all ready to paint any models yet, just want to get the feel of it. What do you guys recommend? Aren't acrylics water based? If so, could I use them with just the water flush for clean up?

I'm sure no expert, but it looks darn good to me. I would only be concerned about the color paint. It is my understanding that some model paints don't get along to well with auto primers. Others here know a heck of a lot more about it than me, so maybe they will have suggestions.

Hey Doug, You are doing great. Here is my first "glue bomb" after a 40 year lay off. Makes yours look pretty good huh? You are going to find a bunch of builders here that will go out of their way to help you succeed. Ask anything that you want. One, or several, folks will have an answer.

Yep Aaron, As Raul says, about as casual as it gets. Think of it as an informal NNL, if you can imagine that. Bring what you want, if you want. Just a bunch of guys getting together over lunch, and perhaps a beverage or two, to BS. I'm trying to attract "newbies" like myself for a chance to meet 1 on 1 with some terrific builders.

Not a fan of "donks", but if that's what someone wants to build, so be it. To me, a "donk" with a nice paint job, is like putting ballet shoes on a hippopotumus. When you get done, It's still a big ugly thing that can't move. I'm not into low riders either, but can appreciate the skills and work that go into them, and love seeing them, especially the paint jobs. Tradionalist, I guess, but I echo...WHY?
-
Why laugh? They all make sense to me. Would just add one. Never salute an officer with only one finger.
-
Might have found some decals on line to save the detail painting.
-
Hey Ron, Anyplace in your area that you would recommend placing a flyer? I'm really trying to get other "rookies" like myself into this. Great chance to meet 1 on 1 with some top builders.

Check out the doll house section at your LHS. They will have a selection of miniature screen materials in several materials.

O.K. Gregg, Same lighting. Same settings, macro, no flash, etc... Backed up the camera as far as my work table would allow, and zoomed. I've got ISO on auto. Don't know if there is much of a difference. To chicken to try to make many adjustments. So far, seems to work O.K. for posting photos.

How will this help my paint jobs? -
Wow Aaron, nice tip. I'm sure that a lot of the better builders will find it usefull. However, my skills are not such that I am looking for the "perfect" finish, just a little bit nicer than the standard Future finish. When and if, I can get my painting skills to another level, I'll surely try the Future/Simple Green combo.

Nope Gregg, and there you go, talking nasty again. It's just that when you spend a few hours in your chair, doing a little work on line, adding something to your latest build, and checking out some stuf on the forums, you don't realize how much time you have spent in about the same position in your chair. Then you try to stand up and realize that you are kind of "locked" into place. A lumbar support helps take the strain off.

O.K. Bob, it does have a lot of texture. Next coat going on as soon as I finish this.
