B-pillar trim eliminated, and some black ink in the panels lines, it must be getting close to color time!
-
Nah, I wish I could make that one, but I've only got enough extra cash for a couple that are closer to home. Maybe if gas keeps dropping I can make Atlanta, God knows I want to hit that one one day!

What? Another WIP when the Duster isn't finished yet? Sam's gonna be ticked off, but he'll be fine, the Duster is almost done anyhow. This one's happening because I've got a great idea for a killer paint job, and I'm using the Galaxie because...well, it was just sitting there! Let's start by deepening the panel lines and getting rid of the mold lines, which weren't that bad for an old tool! I also removed the trim pieces from the B-pillars, they would have been buried under the paint anyhow!

Thanks James, I'm trying to get it done so I can hit at least two contests with it this summer before it goes back west to Sam!

What am I doing wrong
Custom Mike replied to Blackwolf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Adhesion Promoter is used for painting the plastic bumpers on cars, it's essentially a clear primer that remains slightly tacky, allowing paints to stick to the bumper covers. Why are you using it on a model...unless the model is vinyl, it shouldn't be needed. A good quality primer (I use Dupli-Color) should be all you need. -
OK, let's bring this baby up to speed again. I got my side window in place on the driver's side and did a quick test-fit with the chassis and interior to make sure I didn't have any issues, thankfully it fit like a glove! I didn't get so lucky with the six-pack air cleaner though, it was still a bit too tall. So I cut a huge groove i the bottom of it, and it finally fits and allows the hood to close properly. Then I got all the foil work done, all that's left now is the door handles, PE locks, front tires and back bumper and this baby will be done! If the on-call phone settles down tomorrow, I might be able to finish her off!

James, you know as well as I do that I'm gonna finish this before Sam finishes the NOVA!! Russ, I picked it up from Hayes Hobby House in Fayetteville, NC, but I'm sure you can find it online somewhere, just look for a Trumpeter Panel Scriber, you'll love it! The embossing powder came from Michaels, but any arts & crafts store should carry the stuff. I've gotten tiny bits of work done on this, but nothing worthy of being posted yet, I hope I can get some done tonight, we'll see!

Tamiya 1/24 1982 Renault 5 Turbo Rally (Twin's Build)
Custom Mike replied to BMX Addicts's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Erik, that body (and all the other associated parts that needed to be body color) would have to be sanded, that texture is the plastic, not the paint. That's what happens when you don't use a Primer/Sealer under a Lacquer paint! Juan, the "Purple Pond is Super Clean, Purple Power or any number of other Degreasers used to strip most paints (Acrylics and Enamels mainly). If you want to strip Lacquers, you need to use something a bit stronger, like D.O.T. 3 Brake Fluid. Super Clean is great, you can pick it up at Wal-Mart for about $8 a gallon, D.O.T. 3 Brake Fluid you'll have to get from an auto parts store, the cheap store brand will do just fine, Buy some plastic containers big enough for a model body, put whichever stripper you're using in the container (I keep one container of each on hand), and dunk the body in and let it sit overnight. USE RUBBER GLOVES with the Super Clean, it'll take the oils right out of your skin, causing severe cracking of the skin! Once the parts have been in there for a day or so, pull 'em out, rinse 'em off (You might need an old toothbrush for stubborn spots of paint), and prep for paint again! -

Don't worry, you'll do this one day too, it's just a matter of time, and the Law of Averages will catch up to you sooner or later! -

Juan, I never finished mine. I started in on it when it was first released a few years ago, and got it all ready for paint. Then I discovered the "softer" Revell new formula plastic...I used House Of Kolors Turquoise paint (Which is a lacquer, meaning it has very "hot" solvents) and promptly ruined the body. I ordered all the ruined parts from Revell, and by the time I got them, I had moved on to about 10 other projects, so it just got boxed back up. One day I'll break it back out and finish it! -

Both of mine were the Special Edition kits, and both had the same issue with the "leftover" from the '69's vinyl top. Who knows, maybe Revell cleaned up the tooling? Here's a couple of pics of the "issue" on my second body... -
The '68 Charger is a nice kit, but it's got a nasty little remnant of the vinyl top from the '69 version...it's right at the rear of the side windows. It can be removed, but it takes some slow, careful work with some sandpaper. And a word of warning on the Revell kits, all new Revell kits have a new type of plastic that is very easily "burnt" by hot solvents in paints (Mostly lacquers , so spray light coats of paint. If you're using Tamiya paints, you should be fine, but I'd still go with light coats to be safe. Now tell us which one you're going for after your "twin" build!

Awesome work Ira, one of the coolest Surfite's ever built! I'm sure Big Daddy is smiling over this one!
-
Of those three, the Charger is the easiest to build, with the Duster a close second. The Fairlane takes a bit of work to get the front end down (It sits high if built without modification), and the inner fender wells also have to be trimmed a bit to get the body sitting right, but otherwise it's a great build. The Charger's 440 is the best I've ever built, and the Duster's 340 is equally as nice, both scream for added details! So if you want to give that a shot, either one is a great engine for your first attempt!

Juan, no matter how bad the masking looks, it's effective! You've got two great multi-colored paint jobs, a great start to your 4th and 5th builds! I'm really starting to hate you though, I didn't get this good until around build #200!!!! -
Juan, a few suggestions for some great kits.... AMT '71 Charger AMT '71 Duster AMT '66 Fairlane Moebius Hudson Hornet Moebius Chrysler 300 Revell '69 Charger Revell '68 Dart Revell '32 Ford (Any of 'em, they're all great!)

Build number three, and it looks great even with the problems. Every build will teach you something, and every kit, no matter who makes it, is a nightmare waiting to happen. You got through it and have a nice looking model for the shelf, I can't wait to see your next one!

Beautifully ugly Doc, and Boris is a great touch! Congrats on another beauty for your collection! -
We really need a drooling smiley over here guys, it's builds like this that ruin my keyboard! Beautiful color choice Alyn, you couldn't have selected a better combination!

Great color Tomo, and that stance is perfect! This is how this car should always look, great start!
-
Peter, I'd say you earned that whiskey, those tires look great! Amazing how much more patience we have for this stuff as we age, isn't it? Your work looks great so far, nice and clean, keep it up!
