  1. This will be one really cool build.
  2. As I was viewing some of my research pictures again, I noticed something on the frame above the fuel tank that I've never seen before. I circled it in yellow. Do you guys know what this is?
  3. Haha, as your profile name suggests, they were affectionately known as "Driptroit Diesels" and "Green Leakers" among other names like "Screaming Jimmy" and plain ole "Jimmy". As far as the paint you used as a kid, I do have one guess for the color difference. I may not be an expert, but I bet the lead had something to do with it! Haha
  4. Haha, that's exactly what I did. I am actually quite impressed with how well it covers the resin, it isn't as thick as I thought it was.
  5. That's the one I used, and I do agree that it is quite dark for use on the older engines, especially the early to mid 71 series.
  6. That is very close to alpine green. My only problem was that our hobby store (Hobby Lobby) has a very limited supply of anything. So I just headed to the local auto parts store and there it was, alpine green engine enamel. I guess that's just what happens in small towns haha
  7. I will be adding the diamonds in my build, I've never seen them before and it looks quite unique.
  8. I haven't quite figured out if I want it or not, it does look cool but it's odd to have it since is means nothing to me. I did notice something cool about the truck I'm basing my model after. It appears to have white diamonds on the sleeper curtains.
  9. I am doing my kit in the style of the burgundy brougham, I think that looks pretty sharp. As for the stitched "C", what exactly is it? Is it the letter of a last name?
  10. Looks great so far! I will deffinatly be following this build, great job so far!
  11. I always used to wander why some 71 series had 92 style valve covers, I guess that really makes sense now haha. As far as color goes, I couldn't find any model paints that I liked, so I decided to use alpine green engine enamel for my engine. I really like how sharp the alpine green looks on those old Detroits
  12. That does make sense now that you mention that. I would like to go to that truck some time to see where all of that is located on a Detroit 8v71. I also wanted to know something else, how many interior upholstery options did Frieghliner have at the time of the WFT7564T? The truck I'm basing mine off of appears to have a black interior, but I've seen red, blue, and beige as well.
  13. I frequent KJ's website quite often, I really like his items. I just recently got a breather tube from his website. I haven't seen those valve covers yet, they do look quite nice. So to me that pretty much says that the AMT Detroit V8 is an 8v92T.
  14. According to the box, it's an 8v92T. It isn't in English, but it says "8v92T". It's hard to tell for sure though because I just remembered that the early 8v92 valve covers were similar to the 8v71. So the only thing you really have to go off of is what the box says.
  15. I'll have to look, the only real difference in appearance is the valve covers.
  16. So I've been staring at what is done on the model right now. As I look at it, I'm not very satisfied with the frame and parts of the cabin interior. I think I'll be redoing some of the parts on this truck, I want it to look it's best.
  17. Haha, if there's one thing to know about me, I'm a green leaker guy! Try making that same iconic noise from any other engine from Cat or Cummins. Thank you for the kind words, and I'll also take the time now to say you have a fantastic build going on yourself! I love seeing your scratchbuilding skills at work.
  18. Even though i am a Freightliner fanatic, I feel like I could always learn more. Thank you to everyone who gave me tips. I do have another question, however this time it's a question about the trucks themselves. I noticed that the older Freightliner cabovers seem to have an access door in the grille, can anyone fill me in on what this piece may be?
  19. Thank you for the tips! I really enjoy seeing your builds, and while i know my first build will not compare to your builds, I really do take a lot of inspiration from your fantastic work!
  20. Thank you for your suggestion, I will deffinatly try that as I have plenty of tube stock. As far as the radiator, it is just the shroud I have to modify. As far as I know, I just need to make the shroud diameter larger to fit the slightly bigger fan. I might make a custom shroud out of Evergreen strips.
  21. As it sits right now, it is only an 8v71N. I'm just putting an 8v71T in mine just because I had one already built. I have always had a soft spot for these old Freightliners, and I'm hoping this guy would let go of his.
  22. I'll keep that in mind if I ever find myself looking for a donor kit. As far as the engine goes, I have a resin kit from Auslowe that I assembled a while back that I will be using.
  23. Hello, and welcome to my first post on the work bench. I have started this build a long time ago, but I just now started to pick back up on it. I am constructing the AMT White Freightliner dual drive cabover. My plan is to build mostly box stock with a couple modifications here and there, most notably an engine swap (Detroit Diesel 8v71T). I will get my first pictures posted soon, but I want to show the truck I am basing my model off of. The truck is (I'm assuming) a 1971 model. It has a Detroit 8v71 and a 13 speed Roadranger.
  24. Haha, it will be a challenge because I need to make a custom mounting assembly for the engine, and I need to find a way to extend the driveshaft a little bit and a couple other things like a modified shifting linkage and a custom radiator. I am going to try my hardest though, because I figured, if the real thing can have one, I can stuff one in a model.
  25. Wow! That was a lot of useful information. I kind of had an idea that there was a few modifications for the same truck throughout an assembly line, but your explanation made it really clear. Thank you. The picture below is a picture of the steps of the truck I am basing my build off of. From your information, it's a 61 series "raised cab" with the lower loop strap.
