Like george53 I am retired and can go to the plastic dungeon and build almost anytime that I want. I do prefer mid-mornings or early afternoons, but never seem to make it at these times. With the wife working a full time job, I help out with the housework and that kind of shoots down the early part of the morning. Than of course have to factor in my favorite soap operas, witch kills most of the rest of the morning. Than you have to figure in a nap, as your worn out from working off the honeydo list. In the late afternoon the boy gets home from school, so than its clean up after him and his snack, and help with the homework time. Than by the time homework is done its time to start supper, so the wife can come home and finish it, as cooking is not one of my favorite things to do. So by the time all this is done and supper is over, mid morning and early afternoons are shot, so after supper, the dog and I head down to the basement to build, me building and her laying on my feet under the bench. After all there is no better way to end the day, building a model with the dog at your feet Jeff

Aaron If you can get ahold of the book "Building Model Trucks" by Phil Jensen there is a step by step directions on building an old time round nose trailer. Also the directions for scratch building the 50's tractor to go with the trailer. These book are from the 70's and pretty hard to come by sometimes. They are a little outdated by todays standards, but not for the building the older AMT trucks. They are a great scratch building source for big rig builders. At the present time there is one up for sale on the Evil Bay. I am not selling this book as I wouldnt part with mine, but throught you might be interested. Jeff

Harry As an ex Chicagoian and probley Iowa's biggest White Sox fan. I have to agree with Locoenger, the White Sox are not playing nor do they look like a championship team. In fact neither Chicago team is. For the Sox to take the ALDS they will have to win one in Tampa, no way around it. Waiting for them to get back to U.S. Cellular is fruitless. Even if they win 2 at the Cell, the fifth game if needed is still going to be played in Tampa. So no matter what, they are in a must win situation today or Sunday. I for one hope they can do it, I also hope the Cubs can win the next three from the Dodgers. But realistily the lights are getting dim for both teams. If the Sox do pull this out, I'll see you at the World Series, and you can buy the beer and peanuts. Jeff

Yea Clay's complaining now. Does he realize that it all starts over again after you become unpregnant. With 2 kids he's going to have twice the trouble finding the time to model. You tell Clay, that as Fleetside says, wife and kids first. He has the rest of his life to finish those models. Jeff

Aaarrrgh! Oh The Humanity In 1/25.
Cornpatch replied to wdcav's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My problem is not from the human side. The dog pictured on the left likes to relocate stuff off the hobby bench to other parts of the house. She could care less if it is painted or not as long as it comes from that table. I have been sitting upstairs watching TV and here she comes up from the basement with parts, she thinks that I need to watch TV with. And that was a special trip for her to go to the basement to get that for me. She has never chewen anything up but there is still tooth scratches in the paint or the plastic. She also doesnt take anything to hide it she always brings to me or my son, like we need it at that perticular time. She is like some humans, she knows its wrong and she is probley going to get in trouble for doing it. But she just keeps doing it. Its been this way for a little over 3 years now Jeff -

A Trashy Peterbilt
Cornpatch replied to mackinac359's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Tim As always great work and a beautiful scratch built Petercar But I have to agree with Studioman3, that truck would look great done up in a roll-off and or a garbage truck, maybe in Waste Management colors. Jeff -
Heck I on a roll, I have missed with the vote on the last 6. Law of averages says I am about due to get one right. So I am going to vote real this time Jeff

slant6 If those paints you got with your airbrush are made by Createx Paints, you can use them on plastic even through they say for T-shirts and stuff, the stuff includes plastic. These Createx Paints are all I really use with my airbrush as they are made especially for the airbrush and they are easy cleanup, a little soap and water. All you need with them is a good primer, I use Dupli-color grey and or white primer, and almost any clear coat will work with them, again I use Dupli-color. You will also need to understand how these paints work, and you can best do that at there web-site WWW.CREATEX.COM if I remember right. As junior73 stated the auto air line of paints is also good for an airbrush. Althrough they are a hot paint as they are ment for 1-1 cars. If you use these you will need a good primer coat. Also some of these need to be heat cured. A good source for airbrush paints is WWW.TCPGLOBEL.COM if they dont have it they probley dont make it. Also on this web-site you will be able to access color charts to see all the different colors the different paint manufactors make. Hope this helps you out a little bit Jeff

Randxo: My guess is that they are very darn rare, as I have only seen one other one like it, and I own it (no I dont want to sell it). I bought it off of the bay about a year ago and havent seen one on there since. Before I set the knife to it I would do some research and try to find out just what its worth and how many where made. Beings that it is probley around 50 years old and was AMT's first model truck, I would venture to say that there were not that many made. As it was an unproven seller, they wouldn't flood the market with them till they found out how the public would take to them. As far as I know they were never repoped. Thats just my way of thinking, and my throughts on it. I do like what you are thinking of doing with this old truck, it sounds like it could be an interesting build. Jeff
-
randxo If I am not mistaken, which I usully am according to the wife. That truck is one of the very first model trucks that AMT put out back in the late 50's or early 60's. Your right it is a very basic kit, it was made in the times when they used screws for the final assembley. As for the make of the truck I am not sure. It kinda of resembles a GMC and or MACK cabover. But my best guess would be that it is an artists drawing of just a truck. Jeff

Gentlemen Everybody has a right to there own opinon of what they do and don't like about cars. It is not worth getting into an arguement here on the forum. This is not that other model car magazine forum, if you want to post argumentive theads go over there and do it, there will be a lot of people that will argue with you. But we, and I am sure a lot of the other forum members will agree, dont want that BS here. Everybody has an opinon and if somebody disagrees with you you dont have to start an all out argument, suck it up and say, you have your opinon and I have mine---- and leave it at that. Jeff

What Is It With Wives And Our Hobby!?!?
Cornpatch replied to LVZ2881's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well after reading this thread completely thru word by word, it seems that there are a lot more good wifes than there are bad. The way the thread started out it didn't seem it was going to be that way. It looks like a lot of the guys on this forum, including me, have good marriages and are proud of there wifes and familys. I guess the old saying is true in a lot of these cases --- Behind every man is a ###### good women and behind every ###### good women is a good man. As all the guys with good wifes know it takes a lot of work and a lot of give and take on both sides to have a good marriage. And it sounds like a lot of guys have figured that out. My 2 cents worth--- Now back to the basement and model building. Got to go anyway as she wants this computer machine. Jeff -
WELCOME!!!!!!!!!! Mrs Marinewifejones. It will be nice to hear a ladys point of few on some of the builds on the forum. With a lady around, it will add some class to this forum. Again------------------------------ WELCOME Jeff

What Is It With Wives And Our Hobby!?!?
Cornpatch replied to LVZ2881's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My wife has no complaints about my building. She does a model every once in a while, but she isnt into the car side of it, she likes those visible ones. Like the horse, the heart and the people. Also she's big time into jigsaw puzzles. When we bought our house and I decided to take the non-conforming bedroom in the basement and make a model room out of it. She was right there to help, with hammer and saw in hand. Only thing she wanted was a place on the table to do her thing. So we ended up building a table that is 10 feet long and 31 inches wide and seats 3. As I have a 15 year old, that builds to. Now the both of them are happyier than a pig in dodo, as they don't have to use a cardtable anymore. I have to agree, about spending time with the wife. Go places together. Sometimes go to some of the places that she wants to go to. Mine likes to go shopping at some of those lady like stores, I feel like a fish out of water in them but I still go along to keep her happy. In return she goes along to some of the men places, even thro she has no interest. The one thing that all married men have to remember is IF MAMA AIN"T HAPPY, THAN AIN"T NOBODY GOING TO BE HAPPY !!!!! I don't know who said it but it sure is the truth Jeff -
Another way of stopping that bleed under is almost as m408 said. What I do is after taping off is to take some of the Testors clear lacquer, from the bottle, and run it with a small brush along the masking, let dry, spray my color. Wait around 15 to 20 minutes, Take a knife with a #10 blade and run it very lightly along the tape and than remove the tape. Let project dry. Doing this for the last several years I have never had any bleed under. Jeff

Hookedonplastics: You can cure that problem by taking a very lite grit sandpaper and or a #0000 steel wool pad and knocking off the sharpness on the edges. Be real carefull when you do this as you darn sure don't want to take off any plastic. That is why I use the steel wool it does not remove any thing it just knocks it down a little bit. I am with Harry on the fact that lacquers and acrylics are a lot more user friendly, and they also clean up faster and easier. Drying time they beat the hell out enamel. Jeff

Protect your models from those nasty tires!!
Cornpatch replied to KT EASTMAN's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
For protecting the tires in my kits, I would like to use the nice purple bags that come around a bottle of Crown Royal. BUT, unfortunitly I can't drink it fast enough to get that many purple bags. So I raid the wifes stash of zip lock bags from the kitchen cabinet. I have never had trouble getting the parts back into the box, seceret is to put the tires in first, flatten down than put in the rest of the parts. The only trouble I have with using the zip-lock bags is when I don't tell the wife that I took the last bag out of the box. Jeff -
Hi Steve: Sometimes maching paint can be a pain in the butt, but as Harry says you can mix your own as I would probley do if I wasnt so lazy. Take a print out of your color to a place like Hobby Lobby and or Michaels and go to the hobby paint section. You will find bottles of Apple Barrel or Americana or Delta Creamcoat or other brands, they are water based acrylic paints. There are literly hundreds of colors to choose from, if you dont find your Buttery tan color in these paints you are going to have to mix your own because it doesnt exsist. Cost for a 2 oz bottle is anywhere between .99 to 1.49. Jeff

Anyone Ever Try To Dye Kit "glass????
Cornpatch replied to Len Geisler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hi all The main problem with using the Rit Dye on the windsheilds is that they are a hard plastic with a sheen on them. Rit can not adhere to it, you need to take the sheen off with a lite sanding, not hard just enough to get it unshiny. Heat up the water just hot enough to desolve the dye, stir real good, let cool so not to warp windsheild, put in for tint, checking often so as to get the right color. After color is achevied, let dry throughly and make sure dye is set. put on 2 coats of Future. Windsheild should look like tinted glass. Thats the way I have done it a couple of times and had good success with it, the trick is to get the glass so it will absorb the dye. Rit Dye is a cloth stain it needs something to grab on to, and it wont hold to smooth surfaces. Jeff -
Hey Win: Ok now I understand Tole paints, Thanks for the info. I was thinking brand name. my bad. Now that I understand, I use the 2 brands you mentioned plus Apple-Barrel and a couple of others when I paint the wooden cartoon figures I do. Tole paints, dang I never heard them called that before. Always have just called them acrylics. ###### now I feel like an old dog who just learned a new trick. I got to be carefull or the dog will have me sittin up and rollin over. Now that I know what they are, YES I have used them on some models. Not for anything big like bodys or chassis ect. But on interiors and detail painting they work pretty good. If using on white plastic they will cover decent with a couple 3 coats. Any other plastic color you need to really seal the plastic with Future Floor Care and than put on a good acrylic primer ( I use Dupli-Color ) grey for dark colors or white for lite colors. If you don't seal the colored plastic your bleed thru is going to be worse than a 1000 watt kicker on your neighbors CB. Also I have never tried to airbrush them, to much work to mix them. As fast drying as the are I don't think I want that mess in my airbrush. Water I don't think would do a proper job of cleaning it. You would have to use something stronger and to me solvents just don't have a big effect on that paint. For my wooden hobby I love those paints but for my plastic hobby I will stick with the Model Masters for brush painting and detail work, and my Createx paints for air brushing. After you check out that TCPGLOBEL site let me know what you think, you should be able to find a shade or color you would want to use. I don't know if you have Hobby-Lobbys that far west, but that is where I get a lot of my paints. There and Ace Hardware. Jeff

Where To Buy Online
Cornpatch replied to slant6's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
slant6: There are so many places,(hobby shops--aftermarket shops and resin shops) its hard to know where to start. It also depends, what you are looking to buy. Also if you look around here in the states you will find some of these places have good prices and you probley get your purchases a lot quicker. A few places I have had real good luck with are My first choice is Mega-Hobby out of New York state, Order goes in and within a week I usually have my stuff. If its not in stock or going to take a little bit longer, Pete will let you know. Plus the prices are a-ok in my opinion. WWW.MEGAHOBBY.COM An aftermarket shop that has good prieces and a hell of a selection and good service is Models by Chris. If you need something for a diorama or for goodying (hope thats a word) up a car or motor chances are he has it. WWW.SCALEMODELINGBYCHRIS.COM Also if you subscribe to Model Car Magazine (got you a plug Gregg) there are a lot of ads for web-site modeling places in there. Big world out there in cyber-space millions of choices. You just have to do your thing your way. Jeff -
Hey Win:: Sorry about the other post but that trouble maker thats pictured stuck her nose up and hit the wrong buttons Now before I was so rudely nusseled. I see you made the drive over here from the other forem. Got to say there both darn good forems with great people on both of them. Can't say I have ever heard of those Tole Paints much less ever tried them. Where do you get them?? Maybe there just a west coast item. If they work in our hobby and as you say a great selection of colors, going to have to figure some way to get them to the cornpatch. Right now all I use for airbrushing is Createx ready mixed airbrush paints. Really for the same reason, that they have a real good selection of colors. Top of that, I am real lazy when it comes to painting, I don't want to mix and or thin or any of that junk. Put it in the gun and shoot. Heck I even bought plastic bottle tops that go on the Createx paints and snap into the bottom of the gun, just so I didn't have to pour the paint into other bottles. I can't spell lazy but I sure am the poster child for it. If you might would be interested in looking at all the Createx colors try this web-site WWW.TCPGLOBAL.COM click on airbrush paints at the top of site, you will find a whole lot of paints from different companies. Plus thruout tis site you will find many many other things as they are a big company. Anyway glad to see you made it over to this site, and we will probley talk to you again, as a guy once told me " us old guys have to stick together " Oh yea I think that was you Later Jeff
