Yea Mike, checked into that ordering pizza from the Quanset and having it delivered, but that just wouldn't be the same as going there. Kind of fun going to Waukegan, sitting at the Quanset with friends, sharing a pizza, a couple of brews and a lot of bs. You are certainly right about that town going in the toilet. You lasted 8 more years there than I did. When I moved on in 1990 it was pretty much in decline than. We didnt get up there last year because of some problems the wife had. But it seems every year we go up there, some more of the fun stuff we used to do when we first got married is closed up or gone. We used to hang out at a little place over on Washington Street called The Dog House, small nice place with a pretty regular following. I see now that that whole area has been built up and the only thing left of the original Dog House is the sign. Its just so sad to see that town go to heck, back in the late 50s to the early 80s it was a great place to live and grow up in. Althrough Waukegan isn't the only town in the USA to face this plight, there are so many going down this same road these days. Looking foward to our trip up there this year, that Quanset pizza and those few brews are starting to call my name, not to say that a couple of good friends always call and say "hey we ate over at the Quanset tonight" Thinking about taking them off my good friends list. LOL LOL

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reading these post, really brings back a lot of memories. I like a lot of you guys, was born and raised in Waukegan, spent the first 45 years of my life in that town. Am very familiar with most of the places your all talking about, as I spent 12 years. in the 60s and early 70s running beverage routes for Royal Crown Cola in Lake, Cook and McHenry counties, also routes at Great Lakes Navel Training Center. In 74 I got burned out with the beverage business and got a job working for a LTL (general freight) trucking company in Park City, Than I got a real education in the Chicago area. My route was everything South of Roosevelt Road and East of the Dan Ryan Expressway all the way down to 80/94 in Gary. Some very interesting times in that area, especially at night. 1990 we moved out to Iowa, because the wife wanted to be closer to her family. I really didnt want to move, but you know some of us only do what the voices in the wifes head tell us to do. LOL LOL Still after 22 years out here, I would move back in a heart beat, now that I am retired, it would be a lot more interesting with a lot more to do. We do try to go back a couple of times a year to visit with friends and relatives. Especially at times when my White Sox are playing at home. I like a lot of the guys that lived around Waukegan cant come for a visit without going to the Quanset for a pizza. Well now I have done it, made myself hungry for a great pizza, not the garbage you get out here. Guess I will go start packing for my May trip over there. Maybe if the wife sees that I am all packed and ready, she will let me go early. Like she would really let me go alone.

Question for the Grandpa's out there...
Cornpatch replied to Ramfins59's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My oldest granddaughter is 6, she stays at our house every afternoon after school, they only live 4 houses away. In the last 6 months she has gotten very interested in modeling. She will sit on grandpas lap and help him build. She listens to what you tell her needs to be done, and trys to do it the way she's suppose to, but as with everything, it dont always work out that way. As far as the sharp knives, glue and the other tools on the table, she is allowed to use all of this stuff, only under supervision, and she knows that oh to well. Since all of the modeling stuff is in my basement, my youngest son (19) and her dad all model in the same room so she kind of helps everyone. We are going to get her her first model for her 7th birthday and let her pretty much put it together herself. We always tried to make her feel that every model she helps on is as much hers as it is ours. She pretty much has say as to the colors used, heck she is even trying to use the air brush, but finding out, if you use it you clean it, she don't like that part. Course her having rites to pick out colors isn't always a good thing either. She helped her uncle build a tank last month, it is the prettiest pink camouflaged tank I have ever seen. Yup 3 colors of pink. -

Scale tarps and bungee cords
Cornpatch replied to Chad's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
My youngest son (he's 19) has made several side kits with tarps for his flatbed trailers. Covered wagons if you wish. Heres how he goes about it. He gets all the stakes cut, than he makes the side panels out of bass wood, when he gets all of that done, he gets the bows all cut and bent to the size he needs. After he gets the bows all put in place, he makes the tarp. He takes a piece of paper towel, gets it wet, and lays it over the bows and lets it get throughly dry. Picks it up and it keeps it's shape, he measures what he needs from the bottom up on the sides and gently cuts it to size. Than he lays the whole thing back over the trailer, gently makes the folds around the ends of the trailer and glues them in place. Than takes the whole thing back off the trailer. When thats all done he sprays it with a coat of spray glue, I am not sure what kind he uses. When thats completely dry, he takes a paper punch and puts holes where he wants the bunge cords to go. Than he glues on the paper reinforcements circles, that you would use on a ring binder. With all of that done, he will give it a couple of coats of paint in the color he wants the tarp to be. He will also paint the paper reforcements with a brass or steel color to make them look like the real bungy attatchment hole. When the paint is throughly dry, he'll give it a couple of coats of dull coat, to take the shine off. Now they look like real tarps. Oh also if he wants a company name on the tarp, He'll brush on a flat white where he wants the name, put vinyl stick on letters over the white than paint the tarp. Than pull off the letters and you have the name in white. Thats the way he does it and they look really good when he's done. Hope this helps Jeff -

prg5609: I had almost the same problem as you. Living in Iowa, painting in the winter was a problem, you cant paint in the house and the garage was just to darn cold for painting. Here's how I solved the problem. I went out and bought myself a real nice Pace Paint Booth and installed it in the basement hobby room. It worked great except for one drawback, it doesn't take all the fumes out of the house. After painting with the rattle cans, there is that lingering paint smell in the other rooms of the house, especially the basement. To solve that problem, I went to Hobby Lobby, used the 40 % off coupon and bought me a nice Paasche duel action airbrush. I also now use nothing but Createx airbrush ready paints, they do a nice job, have a mulitude of colors and have no smell to them. There water clean up, so no problem with making a mess. Painting in the paint booth almost eliminates any over spray, but if there is any you just wipe it up with a damp rag. This is just the way my sons and myself solved our inside painting problems, now the wife and daughter are happy, they can use there sewing room in the basement without the smell of paint forcing them out. Now mama is happy so everybody is happy. I know there are a lot of guys/gals here that have solved there paint problems in many different ways, but this was our way of doing it. Jeff

PERFECT....OR NOT?????
Cornpatch replied to Peter Lombardo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As a big baseball fan, I just think that instant replay, the way it is now would slow down the game more. Some baseball games are boring as heck and just seem to drag on and on and to stop it for a replay 4 or 5 times a game is going to turn a 3 hour ballgame into a 6 hour yawn fest. What I think they should do, and of course my opinion don't amount to a hill of beans, is come up with 5 man umpiring crews. You would have your 4 umpires on the field and 1 up in the booth with the replay monitor. He would be connected by 2 way radio to the crew chief on the field. Instead of the 4 on field umpires spending 5 to 8 minutes discussing the play on the field than going into look at the replay wasting another 5 to 8 minutes. The umpire up in the booth would have already looked at the play, radio down to the crew chief, the call, and we go on with the game. Also have to agree with Harry on the consistent strike zone, they need to come up with one and or follow the rules that are in place now. I don't think that this will ever happen through, look a few years back they put some high priced cameras in certain ballparks to check on the umpires strike/ball calls. Nothing ever came of that because the umpires union complained about it and old, no balls, Bud Selig did what he always does, nothing, he just got down on his knees and said ok we will discontinue doing this for the good of baseball. That man has no idea what the good of baseball is. I love my baseball, but I only cheer for 2 teams, the CHICAGO WHITE SOX and whoever is playing the Yankees that day. So now I think I'll go get ready for today's game. Jeff -
Thread for Ideas for New Topics/Categories
Cornpatch replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry; Your not going to please all of the people, all of the time. The way I see it its Gregg's, Harry's and Pat's ballpark, so they make the ground rules. I have to agree, the forum is great the way it is now, but who knows, the improvements might make it even better. Jeff -

BJ and the Bear Truck
Cornpatch replied to Drago's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
dwc43 If I were to make the BJ an Bear trailer, I think I would try and find one of the AMT Fruehauf 40' reefer trailers with the Watkins decals (AMT # T507) this is the best match for the trailer that was used on the show. It also comes with everything you would need to make your replica of the trailer, except the decals. Jeff -

International Postage
Cornpatch replied to AlanNZ's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If it fits, it ships, up to 70 pounds, for 1 low price. That seems to be the new motto for the USPS, only thing is, that 1 low price ain't so low. As with anything the government is involved in, the people get ripped off. Jeff -
