http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/tim-boyds-124th--12/boyd-scale-funny-cars-/boyd-funny-cars-models/ This funny car model was built during 1970/71 and finished in early 1972. The bodywork was probably done in 1970. I vaguely recall seeing a 1/1 scale hinged roof hatch that gave me this idea, although perhaps not with this offset alignment which was needed to match the entirely scratchbuilt '70 Gene-Snow style chassis you can see here. Many pix of this and other funny cars of this era at the link....TIM

Here are the decals from the '48 Ford woody from Revell. They were excellent. Virtually no carrier border beyond the edge of the wood sections, and they fit the openings perfectly. If the '49 Woody has these same type of decals, we'll be in great shape. TIM

MPC Chrysler Hydro-Vee "Charger" Boat Kit and Other Boat Kits
tim boyd replied to tim boyd's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Mike...many of the parts (other than the hull and interior) of the Rayson Craft were recycled as the 1968 "Hull Raiser" kit. This later kit was reissued three more times with the most current reissue - the circa 2005 Model King Combo kit with the MPC 1970 Bonneville Convertible - being the most readily available and affordable. Good luck with the reconstruction and please show us pictures....thanks TIM -
In addition to the Mark 1 and Mark II Continentals posted above... 1. The '72 Mark IV - the second generation modern-era Mark, available for just one model year before it grew Nader era railroadtie bumpers. 2. The '87-92 Mark VII LSC with the 5.0L SEFI and the factory BBS wheels. I actually had several of these as leased cars and they were fabulous. I'll never forget seeing Jack Telnack's Silver LSC with BBS's sitting in the circular drive at Meadowbrook Hall....looking as though it fit perfectly with some of the high buck classic era restorations it shared the driveway with... MPC Ohio George Montgomerys Mr Gasket aa/gasser, in clear ?

Don...in one of the Round 2 Newsletters lase year, they hinted that the '69 version might be reissued with the clear body....TIM -
I am building the kit right now. There are suprising changes from the earlier Blue Max release. The entire front suspension is different, being a variation of the original Locgghe coil-over design rather than the torsion-bar style in the Blue Max kit. Like J noted above, the front axle appears to be just a skosh too wide to allow the tires to tuck under the body - I removed the axle hub flanges on both sides of the axle to allow the wheels to move slightly inboard, that will appear to do the trick. I like the body, I find it far more period- accurate than the one in the Revell Blue Max reissue a few years back, at least from what I remember (always dangerous, that). Of course, I still like the original JoHan Mickey Thompson Mustang as well.... TIM http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/tim-boyd-on-line-mo/tim-boyd-on-line-ho1/

My own "evil twin" to the '32 A/SR posted elsewhere on this board... Thanks for looking... Oh how I wish we could line up all the drag racing Street Roadsters shown in this thread for our own mini-NNL event! TIM

James...if you do go ahead with that one, please post in progress pictures! Best regards...TIM

From the 2012 NNL Nationals.... http://images51.fotki.com/v299/photos/6/998986/11162415/DSC_0453-vi.jpg It wears "B/A" (B Altered) NHRA classification livery, which means it is a post-1971 or so replica, but to my eyes this one is a classic 1960's A/SR drag racing machine. Darrell Peters' "Altered States" is based on the MPC '32 Chevy Cabriolet kit, but wears all the appropriate A/SR modifications. They finishing touch is a sharp 409 Chevy engine, a terrific choice vs. the so-commonly seen SBC's out there. And yes, this is the same Darryl better known as "Doctor Darryl" who makes some pretty cool aftermarket drag and Midget decals for us....TIM http://images50.fotki.com/v1573/photos/6/998986/11162415/DSC_0459-vi.jpg

Hmmm...now where have we seen this one before??? Well actually, back at the beginning of this very thread. Here's a picture I took of Jame's A/SR when he displayed it at the 2011 NNL Nationals. Sweet! Tim

In the spirit of keeping this thread going....here's one from the 2011 NNL NATIONALS... http://images57.fotki.com/v256/photos/6/998986/10122006/DSC_0893-vi.jpg Chris Waroner is the builder of this '32 Ford AA/SR dragster. He told me it was well along before my article in the same subject appeared. Thanks for looking...TIM

MPC Chrysler Hydro-Vee "Charger" Boat Kit and Other Boat Kits
tim boyd replied to tim boyd's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Mike...this is an entirely different kit that when assembled looks like anything but the Revell kit. The Good News is that of all the 1/25th scale drag and ski boats, the one you just scored is my most favorite kit. I actually did an article on this exact kit in Model Cars back around 1987 or so - IIRC it was pictured on the cover of that issue. I think you'll have a ball putting this kit together. Congratulations on your score. TIM -
Stacey David's Rat Roaster by : REVELL
tim boyd replied to Greg Myers's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
To add some personal insight here...Revell sent me test shots of all three - the three window, the Speedwagon, and the Roadster Highboy, approximately August of 1996. There were no instructions for any of them. The decal sheets for the three window and Speedwagon arrived a couple of weeks later. I immediately built the Three Window and it appeared on the cover of the other model magazine we love in the December, 1996 issue (sent to subscribers around mid-October). Bill Bozgan also built a kit and his review ran as a sidebar to my article. By the time these articles appeared, the kit had just been introduced, followed by the Speedwagon a few weeks later. But the Highboy Roadster wasn't released until May, 1977. Mind you, doing this all from memory so take it with a small grain of salt.... TIM -
MPC Chrysler Hydro-Vee "Charger" Boat Kit and Other Boat Kits

Dan and the rest...if anyone figures out what kit this is, please let me know! Thanks...TIM -
Neil...have at it! Glad you liked it....Best regards. TIM

JB - Good question! I actually glued the fenders to the tires using five minute epoxy applied along the centerline of the underside of each fender. Then I added the fender supports which tie to the kingpin on the axle, and expoxied them to the fenders. Because the fenders wrap the tires so tightly, it is impossible to tell that I glued them to the tires. The Rat Roadster kit now has the parts to accomplish the same result, albeit in a far easier way. Thanks for asking...TIM

MPC Chrysler Hydro-Vee "Charger" Boat Kit and Other Boat Kits

Dan - could this have been the boat that went with a Tonka pickup/boat set from the early 1960's? TIM -
Time for AMT / Round @ to get going ?
tim boyd replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Regretably, I don't think we will see this one reissued, ever. I think the '32 tool (other than the sedan body shell) is long gone. BUT for those of you, who like me, have fond memories of the '32 Sedan Custom, there will be an article revisiting this kit in a future issue of MC, and it may be the next issue....TIM -
MPC Chrysler Hydro-Vee "Charger" Boat Kit and Other Boat Kits
tim boyd replied to tim boyd's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Casey....they are esentially the same kit, with a revised seating layout and new headers for the Chrysler engine, and omission of the adhesive real wood veneer that was in the original Show and go kit. I prefer the original interior because the seat sew pattern exactl matches the side upholstery panels. The parts to convert the |Hemi \hydro back to the Show and Go version are offered as a trans-kit by Norm Veber at Replicas and |Miniatures of |Maryland. I did do a kit history on 1/25th scale boats in Model Cars magazine, around 2007 or so. I believe I did cover both these kits. Best regards...TMI -
Marty...they were the headers from the '64 Dodge Super Stock kit from JoHan. They are single castings; these were from a late production run and were (like most of the kits from JoHanin the final years) just loaded with flash. I remember it took several hours to prep each one and I used Flat Black paint to hide the remaining flaws when Flat White would have been more era-correct. I had to slightly adjust the header tube spacing where they meet the exhaust outlets on the cylinder hears, to properly match the Ford FE (vs. Chrysler Hemi) exhaust port spacing. Best regards...TIM To everyone who has replied to this thread....thanks guys for all the great commments. Best regards...TIM

I don't know of a source but you might ask Jack Smith at Top End Decals....Jack lives nearby East Lansing (Howell area, if I recall correctly), and this type of subject falls right within his product line. TIM

Very cool, James. Really like your choice of build options, and your addition of a hood is one area where my builds fell a little short of the mark. Congratulations and thanks for posting! TIM

Bernard...extraordinarily well spoken. You don't have to like the winner this year, but this is a terrific explanation of why it won, and the backroom considerations and influences that often have impacted the choice of this award over the years. I can assure that this will be a very, very popular choice with most of the street rodding community. Like almost all the vehicles Roy Brizio and his team build, I expect that this will be a highly roadable vehicle, not a show pony. (Trust me, there's nothing like watching the front wheels on a Roy Brizio driven highboy as they are rotating at triple digit speeds). Full disclosure - I've been a friend of Roy since the early 1980's and I could not be more happy for him - or John - for their win. And again, Bernard, great job explaining what is going on here an taking the time to explain it to other people. TIM

Glenn....thanks! And it's great to hear that an article I wrote nearly 35 years ago is still helping you with a new build project. Please share pictures of that '49 Merc when you are ready! TIM
