So have most other cars, too, at least in Europe. The Corvette still wins races though, and you can't beat it in the bang for the buck department. The new ZR1 will outperform a Fiorano in every aspect, yet for the price of the 'rari you can buy two ZR1s, have one of them shipped to Monaco and spend a years holiday there.

It looks like since Revell has launched its modern Deuce kits, most modellers have walked away from the venerable AMT kits and never looked back. However, if this hobby has a backbone, then the AMT '32 kits must be one of its vertebrae. They have served the community for what must be half a century now, and that, my friends, is history, no matter how you look at it. Have the AMT kits been deservedly swept aside by Revell's effort? There seem to be a few who do not think so, among them Bill Engwer and myself. I hence suggest a community build-off. - The build must be based on an AMT '32 Ford. It doesn't matter which issue or body style you use (This includes the Phantom Vickie). - It must be a fresh build. Pulling an old build from your shelf and dusting it off is not permitted. Finishing off that slightly started project you have lying around for a decade or three is allowed, and restorations of glue bombs are also allowed. - Unlimited use of aftermarket parts and kitbashing is permitted, EXCEPT FOR PARTS FROM ANY OF THE REVELL DEUCES! That's right! Let's pretend it is still last century and the Revell kits have not yet been released. So whatcha think, lads and ladettes?

It's funny that you say this, since I had similar - how shall I say this? - 'emotions'. The Revell just didn't 'feel' right when I started making a roadster. I cannot pinpoint where they got it wrong, if they did at all, but I find the Revell bodies oddly soulless, whereas the AMT has some good old-timey character. The best of both worlds would probably be to use the body from the AMT and the oily bits from the Revell? Keep in mind, a slavish reduction of 1:1 dimensions by the factor 25 will never yield a model that looks 'right'. Your perspective is completely different when you look at a model. With the reduction in size must go an artistic 'distorting' or 'skewing' to make it look right to the eye. -

Nice looking Deuces there. I think it's marvellous that at least you are still holding onto the old AMT tool that served modellers for almost half a century, but seems to be totally forgotten since the Revell release. -

Tellya. I was recently thinking about how I would build my 1/16 AMT '57 Nomad. Now, the Tri-Chevies are cars I simply cannot bring myself towards building strictly stock. I just couldn't come up with anything I really liked though. Then one appeared in a dream I had. It was slightly raked on shiny Cragar SS wheels and pretty much stock except for shaved door handles and no script and 'V' on the bonnet. All other exterior decoration was left intact. It was painted in a sort of light gold/sand metallic overall, quite sparkling, with no two-toning, and it had two simple 2 1/4" round tailpipes underneath the rear bumper, squarely cut off, like rifle barrels, with no chrome end caps. -

In my dreams. And this is the truth. It takes me forever to decide what I want a certain car to look like. I look at many pictures of real cars and models of said car, and there are usually a few among them which I like. But those I can't just build, because that would make me a copycat. Then I suddenly see the solution in a dream. OK, the above only holds true for custom cars. I build mostly factory stock though, thus there is much less need for inspiration. You just build them like you would have ordered them at your friendly dealership. -
The Corvette always was a strong seller in Europe, but for being a Corvette, i.e. for being genuinely American. Not for being some europeanised marketing excercise. There are enough European sports cars to chose from. If they make the Corvette too Euro, it will fail in this market. Big mistake.

You don't have to convince me, I am driving V8s for over 30 years now. Even with my 61 Imperial I didn't need more than 13.5 litres/100km on the open road. Some old VW Beetles needed just as much. However, what I said is that on cars that are intended to respond to emergencies where lives could be at stake, fuel consumption shouldn't matter at all. Police is using V8 BMWs, turbo Volvos, or ST Mondeos for that kind of work here in the UK.
