  1. I'm glad you enjoyed the post! I agree that the story of the Cannonball is quite something and always inspiring...in a rebellious sort of way. Every time I read the book or find new information or photos of the Run, it amazes me at the outright chutzpah the entrants had. Truly, an adventure of a lifetime! Hopefully, some reissues would enable the Cannonball editions. I checked a popular auction site, and there are several 1/25 scale '72 Challenger kits from Lindberg, as well as, several 1/24 scale Arii versions on offer.
  2. Hello all! I hope your builds are coming along. If you have any updates, please share! Today, I would like to continue with some Cannonball history. As many of you know, Brock Yates was the founder of the Cannonball Sea-to-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. He ran in all four original events as well as a, we’ll call it, proof-of-concept run in 1971. Therefore, we’ll take a look at his entries for those Runs. 1971 (May): 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van, aka, Moon Trash II; Drivers: Brock Yates, Steve Smith, and Jim Williams. Brock’s son, Brock Jr., would also be present (but at only 14-years old, was not able to drive); Time: 40h 51m; Placing: n/a Original article 1971 (November): 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB Daytona; Drivers: Brock Yates and Dan Gurney; Time: 35h 54m; Placing: 1st (-53min ahead) Original article 1972: 1972 Dodge Challenger; Drivers: Brock Yates, Bob Brown, and Bud Stanner; Time: 37h 26m; Placing: 2nd (+10min behind) Original article 1975: 1972 Dodge Challenger; Drivers: Brock Yates and Steve Behr; Time: 38h 03m; Placing: 3rd (+2h 10m) Original article 1979: 1978 Dodge Tradesman van (modified into an “ambulance”), aka, TransCon MediVac; Drivers: Brock Yates, Hal Needham, Pamela Yates, and Lyle Royer; Time: DNF; Placing; DNF (towed to the finish) Original article Brock raced in all four Runs winning the first and being towed into the Portofino in the last. The final Run would also see Needham join for research for his, then, upcoming movie…well, I think you know the rest.
  3. It's good to see such progress! I'm really liking the color choices so far! I've provisionally modeled the exhaust (less flanges, bolts, etc.). The ITBs are also in place.
  4. ...and a small (very small) easter egg on the idler pulley.
  5. I finally (provisionally) completed the alternator as well as the pulleys and belt. I converted the belt system from dual to single as the air pump, power steering (on the FD RX7, not the RX3), and AC are not being used.
  6. Great updates everyone! It seems that every year the builds reach another level. I believe it's going to be a close voting this year again!
  7. Great job, Anton! Updated entry list. 1990 Ford Mustang (Fat Brian) 1974 Plymouth GTX (Lunajammer) VW Corrado Magnum (stitchdup) 1975 AMC Gremlin (Tim08) Nissan 240ZG (Spottedlaurel) 1957 Ford Fairlane (MeatMan) 1965 Buick Riveira (Keef) 1990 Ford Mustang LX (53gmc) 🏁 1967 Pontiac GTO (Pat Minarick) 1966 Ford Mustang (beans) 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS (Disconovaman) 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (Westrods) 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon (atomicholiday) 1974 Pontiac TransAm (Can-Con) 1967 Chevrolet Camaro (Camaro lover) 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (Kermn8r) 1997 Ford Expedition (oldcarfan) Ferrari 512BB (avidinha) 1970 Chevrolet Malibu (KWT) 1972 Mazda RX3 (White Rabbit) 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee (slusher) 1971 Plymouth GTX (Bills72sj) VW Vanagon LLE (tooltime-fan) 2003 Chevrolet SSR (xbazzarex) 1984 Porsche 911 Turbo (Mattilacken) 🏁 1967 Chevrolet Impala (Jantrix) 1966 Chevrolet El Camino (NOBLNG)
  8. Engine work continues...The water pump and housing, thermostat and housing, and expansion tank are preliminarily completed. Next is the alternator.
  9. I was able to figure out most of the decals, but there are some that are, unfortunately, not legible from the photos; again, scarce reference material. For sure, if (and, hopefully, when) I complete them, I'll certainly let you know.
  10. Agreed. The Yates book is certainly closest to a documentary as there is (and a great read!). It's certainly a challenge to find references of the original winners, let alone the rest of the runners. For example, the link in my post to the RX2 is the only photo of that car that I was able to find; and even that was a surprise. There is a Facebook page dedicated to the Run with unique pictures: https://www.facebook.com/realcannonballrun Like you, I set out to build the original winners. I was able to acquire all the kits (though, the Cadillac is a body only). Thus far, I've completed the Daytona (less the decals which I've been a bit lax on making). The biggest challenge of the build was finding good reference photos, of which there are few. As for the Cadillac, the only photos that I've come across are those in the book, so a lot of inference is going to be needed to complete it.
  11. Hello Cannonballers! I hope you're well and that your builds are progressing. This year, I wanted to also wanted to introduce some Cannonball history and trivia to enriches our scale version. Oldcarfan has already posted a link to an interesting article detailing a previous record holder. Likewise, if anyone wishes to contribute with Cannonball facts, history, or anything of interest; please feel free to post. To begin, and because I'm entering a Mazda in this year's Run, I thought I would post some details about Mazda cars and their participation in the original Runs. 1972: Mazda RX2 driven by Fred De Van and Paul Solski that finished 6th with a time of 39:29 minutes and an average speed of 73.8mph. Image: Instagram Image 1975: Mazda RX4 driven by Tom Kozlowski, Jeff Martini, Pierre Honegger, and Ray Walle that finished 8th with a time of 39.22 and an average speed of 73.6mph. The picture was taken atop the RedBall Garage in New York prior to the race start. The (e-z wider) RX4 can be seen just behind the Porsches. (Image and article link: 1975 Cannonball Run) 1979: Mazda RX7 driven by Richard Doherty and Tad Richardson that finished 6th with a time of 35:17 and an average speed of 80.6mph. The picture was taken at the conclusion of the race at the Portofino Inn. The RX7 can be seen at bottom center. (Image and article Link: 1979 Cannonball)
  12. Great updates! I'm glad to see the builds coming along. Work on the transmission continues. I've now gone back to the bell-housing for further detail and accuracy; including the associated parts (starter, slave cylinder, etc.)
  13. Interesting article; thank you for sharing! If anyone has any Cannonball trivia, stories, or anything Cannonball, please feel free to share it with us! Not only may we learn something new or gain inspiration, but it also adds richness to our scale Run.
  14. Entry list, thus far: 1990 Ford Mustang (Fat Brian) 1974 Plymouth GTX (Lunajammer) VW Corrado Magnum (stitchdup) 1975 AMC Gremlin (Tim08) Nissan 240ZG (Spottedlaurel) 1957 Ford Fairlane (MeatMan) 1965 Buick Riveira (Keef) 1990 Ford Mustang LX (53gmc) 🏁 1967 Pontiac GTO (Pat Minarick) 1966 Ford Mustang (beans) 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS (Disconovaman) 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (Westrods) 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon (atomicholiday) 1974 Pontiac TransAm (Can-Con) 1967 Chevrolet Camaro (Camaro lover) 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (Kermn8r) 1997 Ford Expedition (oldcarfan) Ferrari 512BB (avidinha) 1970 Chevrolet Malibu (KWT) 1972 Mazda RX3 (White Rabbit) 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee (slusher) 1971 Plymouth GTX (Bills72sj) VW Vanagon LLE (tooltime-fan) 2003 Chevrolet SSR (xbazzarex) 1984 Porsche 911 Turbo (Mattilacken) 1967 Chevrolet Impala (Jantrix) 1966 Chevrolet El Camino (NOBLNG)
  15. Hello everyone! I hope your builds are coming along. Like always, if you have any updates, we'd definitely enjoying seeing them! As for my update, I've been blocking-in the transmission. It's interesting to note how small a rotary engine really is!
  16. The front cover is effectively complete (less fillets and bolt details that I'm saving for the final step). Now, it's onto the oil pan.
  17. Hello all! I hope everyone's builds are coming along. I've been working on the engine more and have now come to the front cover. Afterwards, it should it be onto the transmission, intake, ancillaries, and exhaust.
  18. I mocked-up the Watanabes tonight. The ride height its actually kit height as the car is intended to have flares, so the ride height is lower than stock. I'm happy with the stance, so it'll remain.
  19. I printed two sets of wheels for the RX3: 16x7 RS Watanabe RS and 15x7 Bridgestone RAP. The photo below shows a mock-up of the RAPs. Hopefully, I can do some post-processing tomorrow and mock-up the Watanabes as well.
  20. Beans is correct: you certainly didn't get removed from the entry list! Once you're entered, you stay entered until, either, you withdraw or the Run ends. It was my error that when I copy-pasted the entry list, I mistakenly used an earlier one. I apologize for the oversight, but also thank you for bringing it to my attention. Please find the correct entry list below. 1990 Ford Mustang (Fat Brian) 1974 Plymouth GTX (Lunajammer) VW Corrado Magnum (stitchdup) 1975 AMC Gremlin (Tim08) Nissan 240ZG (Spottedlaurel) 1957 Ford Fairlane (MeatMan) 1965 Buick Riveira (Keef) 1990 Ford Mustang LX (53gmc) 🏁 1967 Pontiac GTO (Pat Minarick) 1966 Ford Mustang (beans) 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS (Disconovaman) 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (Westrods) 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon (atomicholiday) 1974 Pontiac TransAm (Can-Con) 1967 Chevrolet Camaro (Camaro lover) 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (Kermn8r) 1997 Ford Expedition (oldcarfan) Ferrari 512BB (avidinha) 1970 Chevrolet Malibu (KWT) 1972 Mazda RX3 (White Rabbit) 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee (slusher) 1971 Plymouth GTX (Bills72sj) VW Vanagon LLE (tooltime-fan) 2003 Chevrolet SSR (xbazzarex) 1984 Porsche 911 Turbo (Mattilacken) 1967 Chevrolet Impala (Jantrix) 1966 Chevrolet El Camino (NOBLNG)
  21. Thank you! I used an Elegoo Saturn 2 8k with their 8k resin.
  22. Hello all! Just wanted to post a parts update. I recently replaced my old 2k printer that wasn't working quite well anymore with a new 8k 3d printer. Today, I ran the first print: wheels, tires, seats, and front damper covers. If you look close, you can see the branding on the tires.
  23. Current entrants: 1990 Ford Mustang (Fat Brian) 1974 Plymouth GTX (Lunajammer) VW Corrado Magnum (stitchdup) 1975 AMC Gremlin (Tim08) Nissan 240ZG (Spottedlaurel) 1957 Ford Fairlane (MeatMan) 1965 Buick Riveira (Keef) 1990 Ford Mustang LX (53gmc) 🏁 1967 Pontiac GTO (Pat Minarick) 1966 Ford Mustang (beans) 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS (Disconovaman) 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (Westrods) 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon (atomicholiday) 1974 Pontiac TransAm (Can-Con) 1967 Chevrolet Camaro (Camaro lover) 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (Kermn8r) 1997 Ford Expedition (oldcarfan) Ferrari 512BB (avidinha) 1970 Chevrolet Malibu (KWT) 1972 Mazda RX3 (White Rabbit) 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee (slusher) 1971 Plymouth GTX (Bills72sj) VW Vanagon LLE (tooltime-fan) 2003 Chevrolet SSR (xbazzarex) 1984 Porsche 911 Turbo (Mattilacken) 1967 Chevrolet Impala (Jantrix)
  24. It's great to see so much progress; and so quickly too! A small update for my RX3. After taking some time to further detail the tires, I've gotten back to the engine. The front-side housing is essentially complete, so now it'll be onto the rear-side housing, front cover, and ancillaries.
