thining nail polish
mageckman replied to buck smallwood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Buck, I use lacquer thinner when I thin nail polish. I have never tried paint thinner for thinning it. I try for about a 1:1 or a 2:1, mix thinner to paint, depends on the nail polish I am using. You are going to have to experiment a bit with your mix to get it right. It took me awhile to get my mix and consistencies down right. hope this helps. Mageckman -
The home bodyman and mechanic
mageckman replied to Foxer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some of that is just scary! -
J, that is a sweet car. Is the bug-catcher homemade or is it a resin piece? Again it is a real beautiful car.

Oh man, Terry, that first one definately brings back the memories. I learned to start and drive one at about the age of 8 or 9. Learned to watch out for the crank as well. One set of busted ribs was enough, lol. I grew up learning about and helping restore several old fords. Beautiful models, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Old movie was a model builders dream.
mageckman replied to dwc43's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've watched this film several times on the sci-fi channel. definately a B movie. The modelling work was actually pretty good, but the "special effects"... well, I'll just leave it at that. -
Flames or no Flames
mageckman replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nick, the best way I know of to set off a "Cherry Bomb", is to use a flame. -
Absolutely gorgeous!! I have wanted one of these in small scale for several years, now. I used to own a 1:1 89 900S. I miss that car. This is just beautiful. Thanks for posting this Terry. At least I know now that there are some in small scale out there.

That is a sharp lookin Monte! I may have to look for this kit. i had a 75, and have been wanting to do a replica, looks like it wouldn't be too hard convert it. Again, that is one sharp lookin Monte.

Personally, I would rather see a section set aside just for the politics and religious stuff that people have a tendency to clutter the rest of the site with. It is rather annoying to open a post expecting to see something on models and it is nothing but a religious/political debate with a few things about models thrown in. Just my 2 cents, for what its worth.

Your Favorite Car Chases!
mageckman replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the chase scenes from any of the Mad Max movies. Those were all(in my opinion) rather spectacular, especially considering when they were done. The 40 minute (I think it was 40 minutes) chase scene at the end of the original Gone in 60 Seconds. The chase scene in Bad Boys 2, with the Ferrari chasing down the stolen car hauler. The race/chase scene at the end of the HBO? movie Catch Me if You Can. -

Is there a real steel 1/25 32 ford frame out there?
mageckman replied to Rob1's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
While I don't have a 32 frame from R&D, I do have 2 of the model A frames, and I have to say they are rather fiddly to put together. They bend real easy, so be careful of that. Overall the frames go together pretty easy once you figure out the instructions. I suggest reading and rereading the instructions several times over. Hope this helps. Mageck -
That looks real nice so far Jim. I been meaning to dig mine out and work on it, but usually don't feel like dealing with all the flash.

28Ft. Rib side Trailer
mageckman replied to Semi Trailer Mechanic's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Very, very nice job. The interior looks almost exactly like one of the trailers I load and unload several times a week at work. Excellent. -
Revell Kit instruction question: Melt
mageckman replied to ccsteak's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
CC, I agree with George, that is heat swaging. It is usually used to make moving parts like poseable steering. Usually you heat up an old exacto blade for this, though you can use a woodburning tool or solder gun. If you are not comfortable using heat, one thing I have done is make small nuts for the top of the piece, instead of swaging. But you have to be very careful so you don't glue everything together. Of course though if you don't want it to move, you can just glue it in the position you want it in. Hope this helps. Mageck -
Bill, in the shot of the body and parts in the dehydrator, I noticed the body was not on a stand and the parts were laid down in the dehydrator. How long do you wait for the paint to "dry" before putting the parts in the dehydrator? I realize that paint through an airbrush dries quicker than paint from a rattlecan, but I would think you would want to let it dry for at least several hours before putting it in the dehydrator. To me this would be an important tip, as I wouldn't want to mess up a beautiful paint job by putting it in the dehydrator too soon, and getting fingerprints or worse in the paintjob.

buffing compounds and decals...questions as always..
mageckman replied to LVZ2881's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
The Novus system and a couple of really soft rags. Before putting the decals on, I just wipe everything down and make sure it is dry and that I can't see any residue left from polishing. -

James, I don't know if you should, but I have polished several bodies out before decaling. So far, no problems with any of them. Hope this helps. -
Paint Strippers - What to Use?
mageckman replied to pbj59's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use Purple Power and it does the same thing. Last time I checked I think it was around 5 or 6 bucks at wal-mart for a gallon. I have left(forgot oops) bodies in it for months with no ill effects to the plastic. Any plastic I have put in it. It usually has everything cleaned off in a day or so. Sometimes I hjave to use an old toothbrush to get some of the old paint off, depending on the type of paint. I set it up the same way kevin suggested and just put the body in and wait. Hope this helps. -
I got my novus polishing stuff at one of my local hobby shops. I think some of the online shops have it too. Try detail master or maybe scale modeling by chris. there are quite a few aftermarket companies out there, I would browse around and see what you can find. Or just google novus plastic polish, I got over 43,000 hits when I just did that. You might be able to find something close-by. good luck and hope this helps.
-
Have you tried polishing it out? I have used the novus 1, 2, and 3 polishes before to polish paint off of glass and it makes kit glass a little clearer and looks a little more in scale, to me at least. I have even used this system to get rid of small scratches in my glasses before. Hope this helps
