Actually, it wasn't designed specifically for black cars, it was designed for Citadel's line of wargaming figures and models. It is used as a base coat to help the paint stick to their metal figures and vehicles. It is to help with shading chainmail and armor and to make lighter colors darker. It helps with the shading. It makes for one less step in the painting process on those litle figures. I've used their white primer but not the black. The only problem I have had with it (besides the thickness) is it has a tendency to etch into plastic at times. So that is one thing to look for with this paint. Hope this helps. Mageckman

O.T. Any advice on this situation?
mageckman replied to Willy Survive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Willy, I feel for ya man. I too, work for Park Ohio Industries. They have a tendency of hiring either idiots or A-holes as management. I'm being polite when I cal them that, as we have other words and names for them in my plant. Our plant just went on lock-down. No more going to our cars or outside during our breaks. It's starting to seem more like a prison camp than a work-place. Plant morale as well as quality is deteriorating at a fast pace. Basically when dealing with this company you have 2 choices, suck it up and do what they want, or quit and find another job. Good luck with the second option around here, jobs are scarce. All the companies around here have been laying off or hiring all the illegal aliens they can. I'm lookin myself to get away from this company. The only good thing I can say about this company is that they are not a union shop. If they were a union shop, they woulda closed the doors already. The unions have had their day and they have run the country into the ground. Again Willy, I feel for ya, as I am dealin with some of the same crooks you are. Good luck with whatever ya decide. I don't get those looks, but then again, my wife has generally sent me in to pick up some feminine hygiene products. They usually ask if I have a brother who is single and just like me. LOL Gregg has pretty much hit it right on the head as to thinning and spraying it with an airbrush. One thing I would like to add is, you may have to experiment a bit with your mixing ratios depending on the brand of fingernail polish and the brand of thinner you use. I use klean strip lacquer thinner. When I use Wet'N'Wild fingernail polish I use a 2:1 mix ratio. However, I recently sprayed with some Pure Ice fingernail polish I had to use a 4:1 then a 3:1 mix ratio to get it to spray right. One thing I have found is different brands have different viscosity in the bottle than others. If pictures would help, let me know, and I'll try to get some posted on here. Hope this helps. Mageckman

1973 - 1980 Chevy or GM Suburban???
mageckman replied to impcon's topic in Truck Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I know I have seen a 67-72 burb on evil-bay, but I don't remember seeing any of the 73-80. Though you might want to try evil-bay anyway. They might have some on there. Otherwise, you may just have to make one from a blazer and a pickup. I know the old defunct mag SAE had an article on doing one up that way back in the late 80's early 90's. Hope this helps, Mageckman -
reflective tape
mageckman replied to dozer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Try Bass Pro Shops, or a similar fishing tackle shop. I picked up packages of something called "LUHR-TAPE". there are 2-5 sheets in each package for about 3 dollars. they come in numerous different colors. I picked up red, blue, a chrome looking one and "glow-in-the-dark". I think I also saw green and yellow when I picked mine up. hope this helps. -
I will buy your KK paint.
mageckman replied to Helipilot16's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Marcus, He works days at a trans rebuild shop, and runs his hobby shop on the side as a small business out of his home. If you wait unti after 6 EST you should be able to reach him there. Ask for Brad. You might be able to reach him at work, but I don't know if he does business for the hobby shop from there or not. And yeah, the website is pretty useless, other than finding out how to get ahold of him or finding out his hours. Hope this helps. Mageckman -

Marcus, I found a supplier for the Kustom Kolors. He has quite a bit, and his supplier still has a lot of it from what he told me. Go to www.ltproshop.com . E-mail him to find out how much he is charging for it. The sign said $4.00 a bottle for the small airbrush ones, but he may charge less for a bulk order. Hope this helps. Mageckman -

mageckman replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Pete, you may want to check your math. Last time I knew 45 and 45 equaled 90 not 99. It looks like a decent airbrush for $49.50. I might have to do a little more checking to see how good this airbrush is. -
Kyle, a cheap source for clear plastic is a bakery box with the clear inserts. I generally use the clear plastic cake covers from the wal-mart bakeries. It will take a slight curve, but will need to be clamped in place while gluing it in place. For dash detailing, I usually use a colored pencil, instead of trying to use a brush and paint. If you make a mistake, you can usually wipe it right off. When I have it detailed the way I want it, I then either flow some Krystal-Clear or some gloss clear paint on it to resemble gauge faces. Hope this helps, Mageckman

That would be a dump tank for tanker relays. When you can't hook up to a hydrant, you set one of these up. The tankers dump a full tank of water in and take off leaving room for the next tanker in the relay. The pumpers then pull water out (known as drafting) from the dump tank for fighting the fire. The one we have on our pumper at my department is 9x9x3 when set up, holds quite a bit of water(and works great for initiating rookies LOL). Hope this helps. John, this looks real good so far. It's a great start . Mageckman

Yes, the createx paints can be used on plastic. I've painted several bodies with some of it so far. It goes on real thin though, so you will definately have to use multiple layers to get any kind of solid look with it. They come readt to go. I didn't thin mine at all before spraying. Hope this helps. Mageckman

While I have had something similar happen to me before, it wasn't while working on any models. I rarely use an airbrush for painting my models, so my compressor is not in my hobby room. I have a big mobile compressor I use for working on 1:1 cars, and it is quite loud. I tend to get lost in what I am working on, depending on what car it is, and what I am doing to it. I do not have a garage to work in so all my automotive work is done outside in decent weather( I try anyway). My wife generally sits out and watches me work on the cars. She worries. One of her friends husbands was stuck under a car for about half an hour when it fell on him, years ago. I was working on my wife's dodge the one evening, and forgot the compressor was right behind me. I was under the hood checking something( I don't remember what, CRS kicking in), when it kicked on. I raised up, it surprised me that bad, and smacked my head on the underside of the hood, knocking the hood prop out of place and the hood crashed down on me in the engine space, to top it all off, my wife was sitting out there watching me and it spooked her (Due to her medical condition she has a problem with loud noises). She was crying, laughing, and holding her ears all at the same time. I had smacked my head on the air filter after the hood came down on me so I was a little dazed. It took her a few minutes to realize the full extent of what had just happened, and it took me a few minuites to get the world to stop spinning. Needless to say, if I am using my compressor, I pay alot more attention to my surroundings, nowadays. I don't want a repeat of that day to ever happen again. Though looking back on it now, even though it hurt at the time, it was rather funny. Mageckman

Zach, while it's not a plymouth voyager, I believe Lindburg did a dodge caravan, though I'm not sure what year. The caravan and the voyager are basically the same van just a different division of chrysler logo on it. I'm not sure when they made the caravan, I believe it was the late 90's early 2000's. Hope this helps. Mageckman

I thought it was a pretty good game, despite all the penalties that Pittsburg racked up. A close game right up to the end. My only complaint about what I did watch of it was the half-time show. It sucked. They shoulda gotten somebody a little less annoying to do the half-time show, like Roseanne, or that William? Hung guy. It would have been more entertaining than listening to a washed up has been wail his way through tired songs.

I hate this kinda stuff
mageckman replied to evilone's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Kevin, this is why I do my own work on my cars. If it breaks, I fix it, I don't take it to someone else. I know what is done to it, and when, and how. There are books out there for this kinda stuff. As long as you can read, follow diagrams, and know which end of a wrench is which, you should be able to do it.You seem like you are bright enough to be able to do the work yourself, and it would save you quite a bit of money in the long run. -
That looks very good. Is it the newer Revell willys kit or the older one?

Aren't we all wondering where our government bailout checks are? I know I am. I feel for ya Jodi, I've been laid off since Dec 18. It's a bad epidemic that's been goin around lately.

I actually use a brush and paint it in the part I want to foil. give it 15 minutes to half an hour to tack up. Then I apply my foil over top of that, burnish it down real good, and then trim the excess away. Hope this helps

Marcus, I'm glad you decided to post this over here on this great forum. I saw it when you had posted it over in the "other" forum. I have tried it and found it works beautifully, but I had to make one change. I use clear paint as my adhesive. I don't have a Michaels around here and Hobby Lobby didn't have the Mona Lisa products the last time I checked, so I had to experiment. It turns out as good if not better than BMF in my opinion and its cheaper by far.

There is a newer article on this technique. It was in issue 95, the February 1995 issue of Scale Auto Enthusiast( I figured this reference would be ok on here as SAE is actually defunct, the "other" SA magazine is just a sad shade of this one.) It is in the tips and tech section. For those that don't have the March 1972 issue of Car Model magazine( I don't, before I was born), You might be able to order this backissue from Kalmbach publishing( I think their backissue archives go back that far). Hope this helps. Mageckman

Kevin, put a couple coats of clear over top of the foil, it should keep the foil from comin up when ya pull the tape off.

That looks GREAT!! If I may ask, what did you thin the paints with for airbrushing?

Have you tried escalemodels.com? they have a forum similar to this one as well as sci-fi, fantasy, flight, military, and aerospace areas on their forum. hope this helps
