A different glue product
Fletch replied to lordairgtar's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Gregg, for the past several years I've been using Formula '560' Canopy Glue. It is produced by Pacer Technology the same people who produce ZAP CA glues. It's pretty simple to use, just apply to one surface, secure it with tape or some kind of weight, let it cure and there you go. It applies like white glue but cures completely clear and unless you try to up your fingers through the window doesn't fail. I have build from 15 years ago that have never been a problem with the glass or headlights coming out. Hosted on Fotki -
Tamiya Limonene Cement
Fletch replied to PatRedmond's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
First time I've even heard of it Pat, but it looks like it might be worth a try. I'll have to see if my LHS can order it. There are some of the Tamiya products that the distributors can't import because of the labeling, but we as consumers can have shipped directly to us. -
My bad, it was right after my post for those interested in the Challenge to contact me, I assumed it was to contact me. And you know what happens when you ASSume something.
-
Ken, who did you PM? I haven't gotten anything as yet from you.

We're down to less then 10 envelopes left for the Challenge. If you're interested in participating in the Challenge get in touch with me before the supply runs out. Although, when we run out I may actually get a chance to start building, so come on guys, get those envelopes while they're still hot.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the Introduction Letter. The artwork at the top of the Letter the 'Driftwood' rat woody IS NOTpart of the Challenge. Hosted on Fotki The 'Driftwood' rat Woody was build by Jairus a few years ago. With that in mind I felt it would be inappropriate to include it in the Challenge. So, it was chose as the artwork for the top of the letter. My apologies for any misunderstanding this may have caused. If you contacted me for an Introduction letter and artwork you should have gotten a return email with 2 files attached. Again, those would have been the Introduction letter and a separate .jpg file titled for the artwork that was drawn from the stack for you. Again my apologies for any misunderstand over what artwork you should be focusing on. Fletch

When you get the return email, there will be 2 attachments one will be a MS word Document which is the introduction letter to the Challenge. The Introduction letter is titled 'The Jairus Watson Artwork Challenge - participant' There will be a second attachment that will be a .jpg file that will have the title of the piece of Jairus' artwork that is in the envelope that was drawn for you. Thanks Fletch

No, we're good Jody, thanks for asking.

Tony, found your message, for some odd reason the PM function does not work when trying to contact you. Anyway, you should have the Intro letter and drawing in your email inbox. Fletch

I think Jairus' idea is pretty sound. On other forums that have a 'Community Build' section the members that are involved in the CBP post quick updates of their builds there, then post their in depth updates in separate threads in the 'On the Bench' section. So if you all don't mind let's go ahead and start separate threads for the actual build-ups and use this thread for general conversation about the Challenge and quick updates. The idea of using the initials of JWAC or TJWAC are very valid and will make it easier to identify the threads that pertain to the Challenge. For those who are interested in the Challenge keep in mind that this is still in effect a blind draw as to which drawing you will end up with. In stead of each of you being able to grab an envelope out of the stack, I'm doing it for you. That being said there are no guarantees regarding what piece of Jairus' Artwork you might end up with. It may be something right up your alley or it may be something that causes you to stretch your boundaries as a model builder. Also, if you would like to participate, please be so kind as to either email me or send me a PM. Just working through the PMs and emails of the past week I have not gotten any building done at all. I don't mean to be difficult but if you want to participate please make the effort to contact me do not expect me to make that effort for you. I don't mean to be the north end of a south bound horse but help me out here guys.

Neal, there should have been a second attachment to the email that was sent to you. The Challenge introduction letter that everyone got has the '48 Woody 'Driftwood' at the top. The actual artwork that is in the envelope is the '41 Chevy Pickup the is shown below. Hosted on Fotki

No Sir, it is not, it was one that I didn't have in my collection or was on your webpage. But, that doesn't mean it can't be added. We're getting c;oser to the end of the stack everyday. I have no problem expanding the Challenge to include additional subject matter.

I must have been on a '29 kick when I selected the drawings for the Challenge. As I didn't pick either the '32 5 Window Coupe or the '25 T's. The other '29 is still in play as we haven't gotten down to where it is in the stack. But this is what it looks like: There are a couple of '32s still in the stack but I believe they are from an earlier series, as one is labeled 1932 Calendar Roadster and the other one is the Boattailed '32. Mike, thank you for the reminder, I totally forgot about that kit. I'll have to make a trip through the garage and see if I still have one.

The '35/'36 pickup grille can also be replicated using the grille surround in the Revell '37 pickup with the grille insert from the AMT '34 5 Window Coupe. The outer area of the '34 grille needs to be sanded away until it fits the opening of the '37 Surround. Another option is to use the 1/25th scale version of the '34 Ford photo-etched grille from Model Car Garage. It comes as a separate grille and surround which then only requires modifying the '37s grille surround. Other things to keep in mind when converting the '37 to an earlier model year is that the windshield on the '37 is peaked in the middle and flat on the '35/'36. Also, the bed on the '35/'36 is 6 inches shorter then that of the '37. The only other noticeable difference between the '37 other then the hood sides, which aren't an issue with this particular build, and earlier years is that, prior to 1937 the battery was located on the frame, in '37 Ford moved it to the firewall. Both sides of the firewall on the '35/'36 look the drivers side on the '37. The builders plate located at the bottom of the X on the firewall should only be on the passenger side of the '35/'36.

Well, after a bit of changing around this is the build that I will be working on for the Challenge. About the only thing that I am missing is the double snorkel intake. But, I've got a couple of friends searching their stash to see if they might have one. I know that Machined Aluminum Specialties had one in the catalog for a while, just not sure how to go about contacting them anymore. Hosted on Fotki I will be using either the Revell or Hasegawa version of the 23 Window for the build. I don't think the new Revell VW Samba van with it's flat sides would be very conducive to the build. Need to clear some space on the workbench then it will be on to building the Bussnaro.

Eelco, the reason for the length of time for the Challenge is that the get together for the big reveal is next March 26th at the 2011 PNW Model Car Fest. I realize that most will not take nearly that long to build but others might. we are in effect running 2 different Challenges one for those who can attend the Model Fest and those that wish to participate in a email entry contest. If you would like to participate in the Challenge please let me know and I'll get a packet on the way to you either by email or snail mail. Dave

Tony, we have selected 50 pieces of Jairus' artwork. The ones we selected are buildable by the average modeler. The artwork was sealed in envelopes and a blind draw was held at the PNW Model Car Fest last Saturday. We then brought the remaining envelopes to the MCM forum. They are available on a first come first served basis. What I have been doing is sending out the next envelope in the stack. If you're interested please let me know and I'll email or snail mail a packet to you. Dave

I think I've seen somewhere another build called the Hampster that would be a good choice for an engine

A quick update on the Challenge. One of the participants asked that being the artwork is 2 dimensional what should they do about the part that you can't see. My best suggestion is to go with the theme of the drawing that you're working from. If the drawing that you have is old school use the appropriate suspension parts and pieces. If it's slammed to the ground then chances are it has modern suspension under it, then Independent Front or Rear Suspension would be the proper choice. If you allow the theme of the artwork be your guide chances are you will make the correct choice about the parts and pieces you can't see. Above all else, have fun with the Challenge, I know better then to say 'don't take it to seriously' as we're all modelers. Fletch

Let me PM Harry and Gregg and see how they would like it set-up. It was the one thing I didn't talk with Gregg about. -
