Help with finding mustang rear axle assembly
whale392 replied to Kaleb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is a good deal, Dave. The only thing he would need to do is swap the gears to 3.73:1s. -

If it makes you feel any better Jared, I am a Dodge guy when it comes to trucks, but I like this body style Ford too! -
Help with finding mustang rear axle assembly
whale392 replied to Kaleb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Now that you have FINALLY answered us as to what YEAR your car is, we will be able to more closely help you out. Your info is incorrect on the FOX/early SN95 axle housing lengths. The 8.8" Mustang axle HOUSING is the same length from 1986-98. It is the axles themselves that are different lengths (1994-98 axles are 3/4" longer each axle than the FOX units). However, being as the 7.5" and the 8.8" rears used the same brake backing plate bolt pattern (be it 4lug, 5lug, disc, or drum), you can convert a FOX housing from 9" drum to SN95 length disc by swapping brake backing plates and axles. The 1999-2004 axle HOUSING is actually longer than the 1986-98 units (somewhere between 1"-1.5" each side). But, the brake backing plate bolt pattern is still the same. You could bolt your brakes back onto the FOX/Early SN housing. You would have to use the axles from the Early SN or FOX though. Now, if your wheels require using a hybrid axle/brake set-up to clear everything, you will be better off having a housing built FOR YOUR APPLICATION. This is not cheap. Or, you could get close by experimenting with different axles, brake rotor/caliper/backing plate combos along with spacers. If you already have the wheels, this is the only way to go. If you still have to order the wheels, set your rear end up first, them measure and measure again. Order the wheels with the proper backspacing/offset you will need. For $1200.00, you MIGHT get what you want, but it won't be an off-the-shelf unit. -

That is looking good, Jared. Of the Fords, I like this body style........yours is looking sweet. -
<==feels another 'Gremlin' thread spread coming on!

I can understand the address thing Andy, so it's ok. As long as you are able to get the paint and proceed with the build, all is good. I was just offering if you needed it (as 'Northeast Indiana' isn't terribly far from 'Southwest Ohio' and shipping to you would be easy).

Looks good finished up, Mike. I think the Silver/Red combo looks very nice together, and the 426 Max Wedge looks right at home in the fenderwells.

Help with finding mustang rear axle assembly
whale392 replied to Kaleb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ok, without sounding like a ###### (might not work, but I'll try): What year is the car you are putting the rear into? What brake set-up do you want? 3.73:1 looks like the ONLY info you really give for the 8.8" you want. $1200.00 and a bit of knowledge will build you one VERY NICE 8.8" (that is, assuming you have the knowledge to rebuild one and the common sense to do it BEFORE sticking it into the car). Give us the info we need and we can help you. I have paid as little as $75.00 for a FOX 8.8" and had about $700.00 in GOOD parts into it (and that was swapping to 5lug/disc). Help us help you. -
Hey Chris, I was finally able to go grab my cans of Factory paint to compare side-by-side. You are correct, the 'Street Hemi Orange' is the Redder shade of Orange. The Max Wedge cars and the Race Hemis are the lighter shade. Guess I need to quit playing with my FOX Mustangs as much, head back to Florida, and spend some more time with dad and his Mopars (and to be fair, my Mopars as well.......they send me letters telling me they miss me!). Andy; the Dart is looking good by the way. You say you are waiting on the paint (is Plum Crazy that hard to find?). What brand are you using to paint the car? I might have a can here, or access to a can I could send you.

And to think; with this as a base, by either/and using dyes/clear paints, you could replicate all sorts of Clear colors and patterns with this. Thank you for the tutorial, you have just fueled more experimentation time!

Koni Reds, Koni blues (sport), Koni Yellows................yup, all Konis are Orange! Come to think of it, The Koni Reds on the SVO are.........RED!

Certainly looks better than I could do, Tony!

Valid concern Jason, and I asked Ed that very question of scale when we first talked. He stated that the reason they chose 1/25th over 1/24th is that the European influence on Monogram doing 1/24th kits no longer applies to their business model today. The only way Revell will release anything 1/24th now-a-days is if it were originally based on an old Monogram offering. Being as this will be an all-new-tool, they chose the more Revell contemporary 1/25th. With that said, I can see the potential this kit will have as a donor for the older MPC/AMT/Revell 1/25th offerings along with its own stand-alone sales. I also see the massive swap potential back into this kit based on all of their later 1/25th scale offerings (The Saleen S281E 351W/Vortec swap is one that comes to mind. The 1999 Cobra powertrain/rear end swap is another). While I would love to have the 1/24th scale size to display with the other Revell-O-Gram offerings, I will GLADLY welcome the 1/25th version. Maybe someone will see this body and be able to scale a CORRECT 1/24th offering from it in resin!

Chris......I'll have to do the same, grab up the cans I have here at the house and see which is which .......(this has got me thinking about the colors now!)
-
Looks good Mike. May I make a suggestion? On the dust caps in the centers of the front wheels; either paint them a dull steel or a bronzish-steel color to replicate the units.

I am 35 now, and dad got me into models by way of me finding a lot of his unbuilt kits from the early 60s. It helped that he is a car guy (I won't bore you with his involvement in automobiles). I was 6 or 7 when I started glue-bombing and paint smearing plastic. I collect more than I build now, but I do start A LOT of projects. I show others how to do what I am doing. Some have gone on to place at shows while I sit and watch (same for the real cars, I teach others while my own projects never get done!). I am what would be considered the 'lower age group', not so much fresh blood, but not chemically preserved either! I am right between the old and new ways, and use both when I need to.

Yeah, I could end-date this and start another open-end build....maybe a stop/start of this thread. I would just hate to think of moving all of the pics and info here to another thread.

Revellogram 1/24 1993 Mustang Cobra
whale392 replied to jeffs396's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ok, as to the 1993 Cobra....it NEVER was offered as a convertible. NEVER. Ford didn't even prototype one. So your memory may be a LOT skewed on that. As to the original release, it may have been 1997, and the box shown IS the original release. You are correct on the latest reissue being the 'Motor City Muscle' release. As I stated, it is a Yellow box art car with Blue graphics (I incorrectly stated it to be in the 'Streetburners' series; that is the SVO I am thinking of there). I have almost a dozen of both the original release and the recent re-issue. If you want to get real crazy, combine it with the Tamiya 1994 Mustang GT 'convertible' wheels and the upper intake/valve covers from the Tamiya 1995 CobraR kit and make the RARE 1993 CobraR...availible only in RED. -
Looking good Mike. Are you going to paint the steelies silver like the car or red to tie the interior to the exterior?
-
Did you craft the front dress pullies and belt yourself as well? That 440 looks better than the one in my REAL 1965 Dodge! This gives me inspiration, and frustration at the same time. I try to do in plastic what you do in brass, and I become vexed when it fails horribly. But just as you do, I push on until I get it right. Thank you for sharing your build and the tools/skills used to do so.

Revellogram 1/24 1993 Mustang Cobra
whale392 replied to jeffs396's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It was initially availible sometime around 1994 as a stand-alone kit. Then it was added to that combo you have. Just two (maybe three) years ago, the re-released it in their 'Streetburners' line with custom wheels as well as all the stock parts. Yellow car with Blue graphics on the box-top. FOX Mustangs are one of my loves, and for what it was based off of, the kit of the 1993 Cobra has the best body proportions of the 'Aero FOX' kits offered by R-M. The engine upper dress is completely wrong for the real car, but it is still a good kit. -
does anyone know what engine this is?
whale392 replied to diymirage's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like a shortened Viper intake on the 340 block. Valve covers are a WTF though.
