  1. Me ? Nice ? Are you trying to ruin my infamous reputation ? As for the pills , Up the dosage , dey ain't workin' . If you don't , you'll end up just like me ! Scary proposition , Ain't it ! The Old Man
  2. Matt , You can easily hook your airbrush to the larger compressor. You need three more things to do so . First , you need a regulator , second , you need an inline filter to trap oil and moisture , third, a fitting that attaches to your airbrush hose on one end and steps up to 3/8 pipe on the other. The art store that I gave you the email address for will have the airbrush hose fitting if it did'nt come in your kit . Your local auto parts store should sell the regulator and the inline filter , along with the needed fittings to put it all together. I know that Paaache sells a regulator for that small compressor or you can go the same route with the auto parts products as you would for the larger one . I prefer a larger compressor with a tank myself . The little one 's buzzing while it was running used to drive me batso after awhile ! The Old Man
  3. TK is the last one you should state that to ! Did'nt you see the group photo from Toledo ? He looks happily demented ! The really scary part ? He's one of the better ones out of that crowd from Ohio ! Gotta admit though , the man does have a point there , O' Procrastinator of Kit Building ! xoxoxoxoxo The Old Man
  4. Matt, Clean the cone and needle , you can soak them in a 2 ounce jar of laquer thinner , this will help . I use fine Micro Brushes to clean out the needle , Q-Tips to clean out the inside of the cone , and finish with the Micro Brush at the end of the cone. Check the end of the cone and needle to see if they are distorted or bent , if so , replace them . This can cause the airbrush to spit or cause paint spatter. A good ratio to start with using any paint would be a 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner. In your case , using acrylics , it would be water . You will have to experiment by spraying plastic spoons or on a piece of glass. Remember that some acrylics are going to be denser , paint wise , and will require a bit more water . Be sure to write down the ratios that you are pleased with ! This way you have a basis to work with everytime you use a certain type of paint . I use nothing but Testors enamels cut with cheap laquer thinner at a 2 to 1 ratio. It is all about personal preference and what one is comfortable with . If it were my decision , I would contact the website that was indicated and order an H5, head , cone , and needle. This way you are starting out with new equipment at a cost of roughly $ 12 to $ 15 . I have an airbrush dvd out that would go a long way towards teaching you a system that will have you laying down smooth paint in no time . Visit me at oldmansmodels.com. 5. I am talking about an airbrush ! ...... Testors bottled enamels ! Scary ! Ain't it ! The Old Man
  6. Hi!, Looks to be an H series airbrush, which is a good one . My suggestion would be to take it apart and throughly clean it . Reassemble it , and close off the needle by turning it clockwise until the needle appears in the cone . Four reasons for spitting .... airbrush is dirty , needle is adjusted too wide , paint mixture too thick , or the needle or it's assembly could be bent . Replacement parts can be bought online through dixieartstores.com. Best needle / head combination for model car painting with this particular airbrush would be the H5 assembly. Hope this helps . 7. Gentlemen , Thank you all for the compliments , they are greatly appreciated ! Don't know why I have'nt posted pics before , one of those roundtoit deals . As soon as Mommy Nature settles down , I'll post pics of the new ones . Came home after working 16 hours today to find the furnace out ! Guess I know what I'm doing in the morning , New igniter installation ! Ya gotta love it ! All of this and another arctic blast heading for the ' Burg this weekend . Yippee ! Donn Yost
  8. Ron , The motor compartments on the Willys will drive you past the point of distraction ! It's like stuffing 10 pounds of " stuff " in a 5 pound bag ! Glad you like it . For more of my work , go to oldmansmodels.com \ The Old Man
  9. On the Vette ? I'm really not sure ! The Old Man
  10. I can only add this ... Be sure that your son washes his hands after handling him every time ! Believe it or not , Salmonella ! Ex's cousin found out the hard way ! He's kinda cute ! Looks like the one Harry P had in his youth , only his was bigger..... much bigger ! The dinosauer that is ! The Old Man
  11. Yo! TK, Beat ya to it ! Kathie and I spent a week cleaning up mine . Yeesh ! , what a mess ! I found more things then I thought possible either to be hidden , or simply lost ! Yours , however , is worse than what mine was ! My suggestion , send me the kits and the Merc wagon , then toss a couple of grenades into the model room . Later, Troublemaker ! The Old Man
  12. I hate to admit it , but , literally thousands a year ! I sometimes wonder where my sanity goes at times . I think I leave it outside of the hobby shop door , then enter ! I know the owner gets a big smile on his face everytime I walk in through the door ! He knows he is going to make money . Much of this is spent on customer's work , however , more than enough is for my own use . I'd rather spend it on paint rather than booze , so I figure I'm waayy out ahead of the game . 13. Yeah ! And those are some nice headlights! ... On the Vette , of coarse ! The Old Man
  14. Testors Aluminum Plate buffing Metallizer works very well for me . Either through an airbrush or the spray can. Allow to dry for about 2 minutes and gently polish with a piece of soft t- shirt . Alclad also works very well . Donn Yost
  15. Saturnine , Like Harry P stated there are a lot of opinions on paint out there . That being stated , it was also the last thing that he said which made sense ! I used laquers for over 30 years when I was modeling with the HO trains . For that purpose , they cannot be beat ! However , In my experience , Testors enamels cannot be beat when it comes to richness , depth of color , ease of use , and overall glass like finish . Now , lets get into cost .... I can paint a model car body with one ounce ( 2 bottles ) of Testors enamel fo $ 6.58 . Fairly cheap for today 's prices by a long shot ! Add two bottles of Testors clear , another $ 6.58 . Total for a pristine paint job , $ 13.18 . As for drying time , I can be putzing with a freshly painted body in 3 days time . Old guy trick , dump 2 jars of of Testors enamel into a 2 ounce paint jar , add 1 ounce of cheap garden variety laquer thinner found at your local hardware store . Shake well and shoot ! It drys fast , tight , and smooth ! I guess some individuals were too busy watching Moses walk by to pay attention to this old trick ! Paint can be found at your local hobby shop in a rainbow of colors . I use a Paache H series airbrush , cost about $60.00. Come visit me at my website ... www.oldmansmodels.com . I know I can help you out and back up what I have to say at the same time . Like Grandpap used to say " Visibility lends to credibility " My approach to the hobby is through bluecollar eyes . Proper paint environment , proper tools and products , proper kit and body prep , proper airbrush technique and application ,The 4 P's , are the corner stones for setting a firm foundation when it comes to airbrushing ! 16. A little slow on the uptake , this was the last street rod buiild of 2008 . Have about 6 more but can't photograph outdoors because Mother Nature keeps dumping snow on the shoot ! The Old Man
  17. Jeff , I might be able to help you with setting up your gun if you let me know the brand name . As for the free guide on airbrushing , it helped you " some " . The dvd will teach you a whole system that will have you laying out pristine paint work in no time . For the price of a model kit , the dvd beats "some " any day of the week ! Dryvr12 I will answer questions any time on airbrushing . Either ask your questions here , or get a hold of me through my website . Always happy to help out the youngsters ! 18. A single action is perfect for shooting model cars . A dual action is best for weathering as you have much more control over how much paint is being applied and where it is going . I love both style guns . However , for ease of clean up and the time spent doing it , the single action is my preference when it comes to painting model cars . Cost enters the picture also. You can buy a single action Paache H series for about $60.00 , a dual action is going to be considerably more . The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  19. Mike, There in itself, is the "rub" . The dvd is'nt just about enamels . I teach a system , a series of steps to follow. It does'nt matter what you paint with . The steps that I call the 4 "P "s . Proper paint environment control Proper tools and products Proper kit preparation Proper airbrush technique and application These are the areas where just about everybody fails in one way or another . As much as I tease about laquers , I used them for over 30 years , playing in train land ! I still use them to this day . However , for brilliance , depth of color , overall shine , and cost , when it comes to painting model cars , enamels win hands down . I've got a 90 minute long dvd to back up my point ! Visibility lends to credibilty Later , Brother The Old Man
  20. Mike, Why don't you buy the dvd ? That way all the bases are covered for ya !!! You don't have to worry about leaving paint fingerprints on the pages , trying to read and work at the same time with a dvd . Donn
  21. Rudy , If I attempted to answer your questions , it would be the longest post in the history of the forum . I recently released a how to dvd on airbrushing show quality finishes for model cars . It is 90 minutes long and it will answer all your questions on products , preparation , and technique concerning the use of your airbrush and preparing a kit for paint . It covers every aspect of airbrushing , from A to Z ! The dvd teaches a system that when followed , and with a little practice , will have you producing show quality airbrush work in no time . 22. Yo ! , Bluesman , I'm going to throw my two cents in here . Now , this is just for Testors enamels which I use exclusively . I use the automotive wet - dry paper up to 1500 grit , sanding under a stream of cold water at the sink . I then move up to the micro mesh kit , starting with the 1800 and working my way up to the 12000. I prepare my paint beforehand , using a 2 to 1 ratio , 2 jars of Testors enamel to 1 jar of cheap garden variety laquer thinner ( Sunny Side ) . I wash the body off with medicinal hand soap , rinse it off , and immediately blow dry it off using 100 psi. through the airbrush. I put the body on a 6in. long pipe nipple , 1/2 in. or 3/4 in. in diameter , held in place by a piece of masking tape which is taped to the pipe , sticky side up , and them pressed into place on the roof of the interior. If I'm using a metallic or pearl color, I shoot the body with a coat of Testors Metallizer ( Aluminum ) . I then adjust my regulator to 32 psi. and begin to coat the body with a multitude of light coats until I have achieved an overall smooth coverage and gloss. I then put the body in a metal cabinet for 3 or 4 days and allow the paint to flash out . Being that I used laquer as my cutting base , the body is dry and ready for clear in just a couple of days. I do not use primer unless I have done an extensive amount of bodywork . Patience and sanding carefully as you step up from lower grades of grit to the finer grades remove the necessity for primer. The smoother the sanded body , the smoother the finish . Testors enamel metallics and pearls can be wet sanded before clear coat is applied . I usually start with the 4000 and make my way up to the 12000 , again lightly sanding under cold water . I then repeat the body prep steps as indicated before , using the same ratio of clear to laquer thinner as I did with the paint. Once again , light whisper thin coats are applied until I've achieved an overall smooth finish and gloss. Once it flashes out , any blemishes or dirt can be removed with the polishing kit . I then apply Novus 2 , following up with Final Detail 's The Treatment wax. The key to achieving a smooth paint job is controlling your painting environment. A Paache H series airbrush , using the # 5 head is perfect for painting model cars . An inline moisture / oil trap along with a regulator are a must . One needs to have the proper equipment starting out to achieve the desired effect when it comes to painting. Once you have a system or steps to follow concerning prep work , with a little practice , anyone can lay out a quality paint job . Cinifiend , the airbrush is the only way to fly , in my humble opinion ! Anytime you need help with paint or have questions about it , I can always be contacted through oldmansmodels.com I hope this helped out ! Yo , Blues , How is the that headache ? Lol ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  23. Sorry, Should have added this to my last post ..... I was just teasin' Bluesman , he did nothing wrong at all ! He was'nt over - exuberant either . His last post was correct in every way. He stated what he had to say as several others did , myself included , and then backed it up . Nuttin' wrong with that scenario in my book ! Starting to feel like a long tailed cat does in a room full of rocking chairs around here ! Donn
  24. David , Blame it on the Bluesman, he thinks that he's entitled to his own opinion ! The nerve of the guy ! I wish he'd just run down to the shop and build a car in 8 hours just so this would all go away! Yo ! Blues , how is that headache feelin' now ? And people want to know where the nickname " Lone Wolf " came from ? Sheesh! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  25. Bluesman , Seems to me , as of late , individuals seem to be a mite bit testicular around here . Individuals are looking for a fight if someone does'nt agree with their stated opinion. I wholeheartedly agree with you , but , you're beating your head against the wall . Let it go , Dude ! Ain't worth the time or your trouble . As for me , I can build either way. If I have a show coming up , I'll push myself to get a certain car done , but only if it's going to be done right ! As you stated , we are all diffrent in our approach to the hobby . I , being single now, no longer have the responsibility that comes with marriage. Therefore , I now have more time to build at my leisure , others on the other side of the fence , don't have that luxury . No , I am not suggesting that everyone rush out and get divorced because that in itself is an expensive adventure ! LOL ! More building time ? Yes ! Money for new projects .....Ahhhh , nope ! Reading through the posts over the last couple of months brings me to a conclusion that certain individuals need to sit back , take a deep breath , and quit battling with anyone who posts a diffrent opinion or approach to their subject . There is far too much knowledge on this forum to be obtained from people like yourself , The Tree Hugger , Florida Boy , etc , for people to indulge in this silly practice . Besides , if I want to witness a domestic , I'll go find one of my ex-wives , and get into it with a professional ! By the way , I read your post on the paint question , you nailed it , hands down ! To say that I was impressed with your answer would be putting it mildly ! You do have your system down pat , something that not too many people understand or practice ! Painting for them would become a joy rather than a task . Catch ya later ! Donn
