  1. Floquil Rail Road colors at the local hobby shop ! The Old Man
  2. Jeff, One thing that I found out the hard way with my first build of this kit.... In the center of the roof where the dome light was molded in , you will find a slight sinkhole . Sand it out or fill it . I did'nt find mine until after it had been painted! The kit itself goes together rather smoothly , you'll enjoy it . The Old Man
  3. Tim, Welcome back to the hobby ! Be prepared for a cultural shock , I certainly had no idea how far this hobby had advanced in my hiatus ! You'll like it here , alot of talent , help , and crazy people who love model cars. Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  4. Ernie, I would appreciate it if you would send me your address . Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  5. You need to find a compressor with a tank . This style of compressor will build up moisture if the unit is run for awhile . Alot of this style comes with a moisture trap but it is quickly overcome if the compressor is run for any length of time . You also need a moisture / oil inline trap along with a regulator. I know that it sounds like a lot of money. However , if you spend it now and do it right the first time , you'll never regret it . This equipment will last you for many years with proper maintenence . Good equipment first , model kits second ! I know too many guys who have their money wrapped up in kits and constantly complain about their build turnouts because they scrimped on the equipment purchases ! Cheap will come back to bite your backside every single time and will haunt your builds every step of the way ! Lowes , Home Depot , etc ,all sell nice sized compressor units for $199 or less. Most important feature , they all have a tank on them . If something screws up in my shop , it is not the fault of my equipment . It is almost always the whackjob behind the airbrush ! That , would be .... me ! The Old Man
  6. You can have the Paache H series taken apart , cleaned , and put back together in a matter of minutes ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  7. Yo ! , Mikey ! This is unbelievable ! You're not supposed to know what you're getting for Christmas ! Jeez laweez ! Santa's going to end up filling your stocking with coal and reindeer poop for that manuever ! As for the laquers ... Best to stick with Zoom Zoom ! He has that down to a science ! As for me , you know what my preferences are ! For me , the Testors enamels are always going to be a win win situation when they are cut with cheap laquer thinner , shine , shine , and more shine ! Do me a favor , don't start watching the dvd until the day after Christmas. This way, your significant other won't be beating on my door with the intention of cracking me upside my pointed little head with a coal shovel ! The Old Man
  8. Ben, If you go back and read through the threads . you'll find quite a few discussions on this . I use a Paache H series single action airbrush . While the dual actions are great to use , it is much easier to learn with a single action . For the most part , a dual action airbrush is overkill when it comes to applying a normal paint job on a model car . A single action is easier to control , maintain , and clean then it's counterpart . I always tell people to walk before they run . Start off with a single action Paache H series using the #5 head and needle assembly. Once you get this down to a science , then consider a dual action airbrush . With that being said , inless you plan on doing murals , intricate detailing , or weathering on your models , there is no need to look farther then the H series. Check out dixieart.com , They have all that you could want in an H series set, plus they carry replacement parts . This is another important factor to take into consideration when buying an airbrush , the ability to get parts ! Cost is another consideration , right around $63.00 , this includes shipping for the entire set . Never go cheap , they won't perform as well and it always comes back to bite you ! As always , just my opinion . Good Luck ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  9. Jim , Contrary to popular belief , I do play with laquers ( Yo ! Mikey Mc , you hearin' this ? ) They will dry up , quite abit faster then enamel cut with laquer thinner . I'd pour it back into the bottle , seal it tight , and find another project I wanted to use the same color on within a month or so ! The cut enamel does last longer in the bottle but eventually , it too , will go south. The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  10. Roger, He was a sniper in the Special Forces . The reason he wore the sweater was to cover up the tatoos on his forearms. As goes the folklore out of Pgh. , he was the baddest of the bad , very good at what he was trained to do . Talk about the proverbial wolf in sheeps clothing ! He was a really great guy to meet in person . Just goes to prove , one never knows , do one ? The Old Man
  11. Okay ! , Uncle Mark ! Level 2 is fine ! Take tools with you and sit down with the boy and work with him from start to finish , shoulder to shoulder , every step of the way .Let him do the work , you be the guide ! Pick up some Micro Brush fine applicators and a bottle of Plastizap glue before you go . This way , the boy learns to work clean and precise with little chance of the build becoming a glue bomb. It is an experience that he will never forget , for that matter , neither will you . You are to be commended for taking this on . This is the way I taught my daughters and I loved every second of it ! The Old Man
  12. Merry Christmas to you also , Sir ! I would be careful reaching into the stocking this year , Big Guy ! Word on the street ..... Santa is bringing the coal , a Triaxle , by the way ! Also , the reindeer are getting in on the act ! Hence , the warning about the stocking ! In the words of one of my favorite Looney Tune characters ," You've been a baaad, baaad , boy "!
  13. Steve, Keith Marks Decals ! The man resides in Canada and turns out an affordable , yet , fantastic product. The Old Man
  14. I dunno , Jeff , Seems to me , this time of year is a very bad time to be telling big fibs ! The Old Man
  15. Hi !, My name is Donn..... And..... I'm a hacker ! My bodies are always prepped and painted after the initial test fitting of the main components , long before the actual build takes place . I usually have 10 or 15 kits cut up and prepped at any given moment . It is not unusual for 10 or 12 freshly painted bodies to be sitting in the flashout cabinet , or for me to paint 4 or 5 kits in one spray session . I simply step into the spray booth , crank up the classic rock and go at it . This way , I'm always out ahead of myself with a bunch of subjects to choose from depending on my mood or what is needed for the show classes. There is usually 5 or 6 builds going at once to avoid burnout and the boredom I seem to develop when working on one build over a long period of time . Since Kathie and I built the new shop , multi - tasking is a pure joy . We have watched the baseball playoffs , the World Series , the hockey playoffs , The Stanley Cup , football , and the Super Bowl , while building models at the same time. It does'nt get much better than this ! The Old Man
  16. I have to go with the Revell kits of the ' 70s . Chrome plating so thick , it looked like it was blobbed on. The bodies , on the otherhand , were so thin that if you put a strong light behind you , you could actually read the instuction sheet through the side panels . As for the assembly , fergit it ! Just hit it with a hammer and call it a day . Ahhh , the good old days ! I have to laugh at a lot of the purists in today's modeling . They have no idea what they missed . Give them the kits of bygone days and they would have ended up in a rubber room . As for the Revell ' 69 Camaro being out of proportion , add the Badman ' 55 gasser right up there with it ! The Old Man
  17. Hokay !, My two cents , for what it is worth ! Revells ' 41 Willys . It just seemed to me that once they released this kit , everything just fell into place . The kits that followed the Willys were all done well and were enjoyable to build . Yes , there were some issues with this or that with the purists , but , then again , are'nt there always ? I cannot say much along the lines of the foreign kits as they are not my cup of tea . I was thrilled to see AMT release all of the vintage kits that they did . I was able to build kits that I had wanted to from way back when . Ya'll can argue the fine points all you want , I'm just happy that we still have kits being offered , whether new releases or repops , it just does'nt matter. My inner child is at peace with itself..... For the moment ! The Old Man
  18. Dave , Beautiful job ! One problem , I feel left out on this build . I did'nt get to contribute any parts on this one ! The Old Man
  19. Ripley, I don't have the specific titles of the books , all are put out by Kalmbach Publishing. The authors are Dave Frary , John Olson , and Malcolm Furlow . All are model railroading books and cover a multitude of subjects concerning weathering techniques for Ho scale trains . These techniques can easily be applied to car modeling. 20. Yeah ! , Gotta admit , The Tinman's got style . The shirt is definitely cool ! The Old Man
  21. Ken, I really can't comment on Testors paints before 2001 as I was playing in TrainLand using Floquil's line of paints before that. As of 2001 , I have been using Testors enamels exclusively. My only diffrence from what others use method wise is simply this ..... All of my paint mixes consist of 2 parts Testors enamel to 1 part garden variety laquer thinner. I use Testors Aluminum Metallizer as my base coat for my pearls and metallic colors . My standard colors are applied directly to the bare plastic . I use no primer unless I have performed extensive bodywork on the model's body . My clear coats are also Testors enamels, using the same mix ratio as the paint. All are applied with a Paache H series airbrush , using a # 5 head and needle. In the past 8 years , since rejoining the car building ranks , I have yet to have had one of my paint jobs go south on me . There has never been a complaint from any of my customers who have purchased painted bodies or one of my built ups indicating this either . Kathie and I still use quite a few of my older builds as paint display examples at our vending tables and they still look as good as the day they were finished. As you know , opinions are like backsides , everybody has one ! I an sure you are going to hear from quite a few others on this subject. This is simply mine . If you'd like to see exactly what I'm talking about , visit me at www.oldmansmodels.com My Grandpap had a saying , " Visibilty lends itself to credibility " Hope this has helped you out . 22. Harry, You fibbed , Tin man ! If there were two beers on the table , they both belonged to Gregg !What I can't understand is how they coaxed you outta the tree house in Never Land ? Must be that new oil that they have been experimenting with . Thank God you had the shades on , the shirt would have blinded you ! The Old Man
  23. Rick , See you there , Lone Wolf Custom Painting will be there. Donn
  24. Awww! No sharing with the Old Man ? If I were'nt so old , I might still have feelings left to hurt . You are correct , temp control is important . Both shops are controlled and it makes life so much easier, one less thing I have to worry about . This weekend is going to be perfect , tempwise , for painting and I intend to take full advantage of it ! As for the thread reply , Although I've never met Bill Stillwagon , I've heard nothing but good things. Coming from the people that I know , Bill is a class act. The Old Man
