Slightly Messed up paint job
LoneWolf15 replied to CaptainAhab's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Joe , If it's a standard color , try polishing it out . If it is a metallic or pearl , forget it ! Into the purple pond it goes ! Me , I'd throw it into the pond and start over . You can also sand it out and lay a few more coats over it to see if it covers up . Donn Yost -
Tom , Mikey MC answered it perfectly ! Only thing I can add ,,,, When using Novus 2 , be sure to polish with a piece of soft 100 % cotton t shirt . You don't have to rub hard , and work in small areas , gently polishing until all the haze disappears . You'll be amazed at the finished product . After using the Novus 2 , I apply a coat of The Final Treatment Detail wax using the same polishing method as the Novus 2 . This seals and protects your finish ! Hope this helps ! Donn

Donald , Bite the proverbial bullet ... Buy the new improved bare metal foil chrome along with a pack of Squadron surgical blades . While you are at the hobby shop , pick up a few packs of the Tamiya applicator swabs in the various sizes . Cut the back side of the surgical blade off with a pair of side cutters , it will then slide right into your # 11 exacto blade holder . Cut a piece of foil larger than the area you are covering , burnish it down with the Tamiya applicator , take you knife blade and lightly trace along your chrome piece . Peel off the excess and reburnish your chrome area . You will be very pleased with the results ! Cheaper is never better ! It always comes back to bite you right square in your hind parts . Donn Yost

Dave . Bare Metal foil peals off without a problem . a bit expensive for some , but it can't be beat when it comes to masking off . Scotch tape works well , you just have to keep in mind that you have to put down a multitude of mist coats rather than a few heavy ones . BMF might leave a light residue , but it easily cleans up with a bit of Novus 2 . It's the diffrence between the men and the boys ,as always , the price of the toys ! The Old Man

Ed Sexton mentioned this to me on Sunday morning at the I hobby expo . This seems to be a for real event as far as he was concerned for next year's event ! The overall turnout for the model cars industry was extremely sad , to say the least at this particular show . Pitiful , would be an understatement ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

Any comprehensive paint and finishing guides?
LoneWolf15 replied to Mr. Show's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
James , My advice to the new guys starting out is always this .... Decent equipment and educational tools first , kits are always second . Having good equipment prevents major problems from occuring right from the start. My personal opinion , stick with the enamels for awhile until you get the hang of things , they are a bit easier to work with just starting out . To answer your question , yes , they can be decanted and no , they do not need to be thinned . Be sure to allow the paint to flash out after you have decanted it before attempting to airbrush with it ! In other words , no bubbles are present in the jar . Sorry , I have to go now ! , THE LAQUER POLICE are beating on the door . The Old Man -

Dave , Standard Dawn dish detergent works just fine getting the brake fluid off as does laundry detergent when using hot water in a bucket . I do suggest scrubbing the entire body with a tootbrush during the wash and the rinse . I have'nt had any problems thus far using this method . Just hope that Murphy does'nt read this post or I'm doomed ! The Old Man -
Any comprehensive paint and finishing guides?
LoneWolf15 replied to Mr. Show's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
James , Try this .... Mix your paint at a 2 to 1 paint to thinner ratio. Set your regulator at 32 psi.You need to apply your paint in multiple whisper thin coats and get closer with your airbrush , about 4 in. away from the body . Coat the body until your color is uniform and smooth . What it sounds like to me , given your description of your paint results , you have a two fold problem . First your ratio is too thin , your paint is drying before it hits the body due to your mix ratio . Second , your air brush is being held too far away from the body while your are spraying . Go to my website at oldmansmodels.com , click on instructional dvds . There you can watch the trailer on airbrushing , it will show you exactly what I'm talking about . Much easier to actually see , rather then being described in word . You should also consider picking up a polishing kit from LMG ( Model Empire carries them ) or contact detailmasters.com , they also carry them . Novus 2 and the Final Detail Treatment wax will put you on the right track for your finish . Don't get discouraged ! It's not rocket science , with a little patience and practice , you'll get there ! Revell preview photos from Toledo NNL #31
LoneWolf15 replied to SteveG's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm generally not a custom kinda guy .... That being said , I fell in love with the Revell Merc kit . I'm happy to see the chopped ' 48 Ford myself , gotta be honest , it's screaming pro street to me ! I know that there will be several in the never ending stash before all is said and done . As for the Revell ' 40 Ford , with a little bit of an extention , the Revell pro street Willys frame fits right under it . You can fit an awful lot of motor in it after that ! Someone mentioned a ' 57 Nomad , I'd like to see Revell release a ' 55 and a ' 57 Nomad , long over due ! Yes , AMT still has their's with the ' 55 , but I'd still love to see a new tooling from Revell on both of these . The Black Widow , yeah , a bit of model simplification .... That is until you graft the running gear and motor from one of the ' 32 coupe's to it ! Now you're running on high octane ! Sorry to interupt , the street rod faction and the factory faction can now go back to boxing each others ears ! Praise the Lord and pass the plate , we have new kits coming out with more on the horizon ! Ya'll should be celebrating , not pokin' each other with pointed sticks ! Donn Yost -
Nick and Thomas , Two more things that will make foiling easier for you . Use Squadron scapel blades instead of the # 11 xacto blade . Cut the back of the scapel blade off with a pair of side cutters and the blade will slip right into the standard # 11 blade holder . Much sharper , easy to control , and a whisper thin cut with little or no pressure .. Instead of using Q tips to burnish the foil down , pick up some of Tamiya's new craft cotton swabs . Item # 87106 , they come in large , medium , and smalll sizes . I recommend several packs of each , much more durable than Q tips , pointed ends to help you get the foil in tight places , and no fuzz , what so ever ! I used to use Q tips all the time , these Tamiya swabs put them to shame ! Donn Yost

As The Tinman stated ( Harry ) , it is a buyer beware market these days . Six , maybe seven years ago , there was a handful of builders on Ebay that put out a beautiful product on a regular basis . I started selling builds simply because I was running out of room and needed the space . The very first build I sold opened up a door to the West Coast for me that proved to be very lucrative , both financially , and exposure wise. I was able to show my cars , both on the East and West Coast, because of this one sale . I formed a partnership with this individual and we made good money over the next couple of years with collectors across the country. Enter the posers .... The market bottomed out !Cameras do lie ! People were paying good money for garbage . The model looked good in the photos , once they arrived , it was a diffrent story. Once this started occuring on a regular basis , the well went dry ! A professional is someone that is paid for their services. Buying built model cars for a collection is no diffrent than anything else on the planet when it comes to the purchase itself ! Find a reputable individual that stands behind their work and go from there . Like anyting else in life , one has to learn to separate the wheat from the chafe ! In other words . the diffrence between a professional and a poser is the product that they produce and the reputation that stands behind it ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

You will fall in love with your H series in a hurry ! Use the # 5 tip and needle assembly . Once you've used it a few times , I think your touch up gun will be gathering dust and cob webs from then on ! Donn Yost

How to make windows for Slammers?
LoneWolf15 replied to bigmikevee's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Tape off the outside of the windshield and rear window , apply several light coats of flat black spray to the inside of both pieces. As for the side glass, Plastruct or any clear acetate will work just fine , Again , cut the pieces to size and apply the flat black spray to the inside portion . Glue the windows in with a glue that has a good capillary action . Do not use super glue ! As for using regular plastic , Sorry , really won't be realistic in appearance. Donn Yost -
Sure ! A loans never a problem with you....... Besides , I do know where you live !
