Expired paint?
LoneWolf15 replied to shatteredsoul76's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Aside from drying out , enamels will begin to crystalize in the bottle and form a type of sand that is going to end up in your finish and can't be sanded out . I always advise that when purchasing paint , go to a hobby shop that sells alot of it . Quicker turnaround almost always guarantees fresh paint , thus avoiding the aforementioned conditions ! I was a wee bit upset with myself when it came to last year's output , only three builds ! Four, if you consider the ' 65 Impala pro street that I finished the second week of January . That being said , it took Kathie all of 5 minutes to change my outlook on said subject when I brought this to her attention last week. She allowed me to finish my little rant , then proceeded to open up four travel boxes in the shop that we use for the shows . She then laid out 20 finished bodies on the table that I had done for our display tables for this year's upcoming shows . " Do these count towards last year's production " ? Yep ! They sure do ! I had forgotten all about them . Leave it to the Blonde to keep me grounded and tranquil. As long as you're still having fun with it , the pace or production does not count . Quality over quantity should always rule the day ! Cranky is correct ! It is an addiction ! God help us , every one ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

Your local hobby shop should carry the Testors Metallizer line in spray cans .They provide a realistic finish that drys in a matter of seconds . I would suggest the buffing formula , gently rub the painted piece with a soft piece of t shirt , it will give you a nice polished surface that looks authentic . I use the aluminum , steel , and gun metal colors on a regular basis . Great for exhaust systems , manifolds , valve covers , etc ! Donn Yost

Tony , The enamel will flash out in a few days when cut with the laquer thinner . The reason for the metal cabinet is to avoid creating an electro static charge and pulling dirt towards the painted body when opening the doors . As for temperature .... Ideal temps are 68 to 72 degrees with low humidity . Being that you are in good ol Mass , you are either going to have to heat the garage with a propane heater or prep a bunch of kits and wait for the spring / early summer to begin painting. Unless they've improved the design , I would avoid using a kerosene heater as it will put oil into the atmosphere and cause fish eyes in the paint . Donn Yost

E , I thought I did .... But here goes ! Front suspension , The best out there is the Revell ' 41 Willys gasser. It is easily adaptable for a multitude of diffrent kits . The second , Lindberg's Little Red Wagon . AMT '33 Willys , both the coupe and sedan delivery . Engines ..... Off the top of my head , AMT'S awb kits , '55 Nomad , '70 Impala , certain releases of the '69 & '70 Chevelle kits , and the '65 El Camino all had Hillborn Injection systems available . The Revell ' 41 Willys has a blown Hemi as does the Miss Deal kit and the IMC Volkswagen. Wheels...... Quite a few of the recent repops of the old Amt kits have Cragar mags , a main stay from back in the day . The AMT ' 33 Willys kits had Fentons . Once again , the Revell Willys gasser had slotted mags . As for tires , period correct slicks and front tires can be found in many of the AMT kits. I am sure that I missed quite a few , the other guys will be able to fill in the gaps . Donn

Harold , While the two gentlemen make valid points , they are not totally correct ! The ' 62 Implalas were generally run in The Super Stock classes , however several Belairs and Impalas were run in the Gasser classes . In Larry Davis ' book Detroit Iron , there are photos of a ' 68 Dart being run in the gasser class , complete with an I beam front axle , sporting a tall stacked Hillborn injection set up sticking out of the hood ! I will have to check through my books , as I do have a picture of a red metallic ' 62 Impala coming off the line , sans hood and front bumper , with the straight front axle and Hillborn injected motor on prominate display ! Check out the front suspension set up from the Revell Willys gasser kit . With a minor adjustment , this will fit on the frame of your Impala. As for a Hillborn set up , the Amt AWB Falcons , Pontiac Tempest , or Nova kits all contain one , which are easily adapted for your project. I would suggest purchasing all 3 of Larry Davis ' books if drag racing is your forte . A wealth of information is contained therein , including photos , personal recollections , and tech specs , etc ! They are a very valuable resource and are available at slixx.com . Hope this helps ! How shiny should shiny be?
LoneWolf15 replied to edward smith's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Wow !, You went there that quick ? Hmmm , Maybe the next time we run into your lady , I'll suggest new wooden floors for the house and you won't have to worry about using Future. All you'll need is a Swiffer mop..... And about 10 grand for the new floors !! Lol ! Funny you should mention " bootleg " . In the early fall , I had a guy email me about ten diffrent times asking questions which I answered for him , not a problem ! He ordered both dvds and was quite happy with them . Two days later he gets up on one of the low rider forums and offers to upload them onto the forum for anyone that was interested , stating that they were not to tell me about it ! One of the members here caught wind of this , ripped the kid a new one on the forum and then fired off an email to Kathie and I , informing us of the situation. Needless to say , after Kathie was through with him , he was a very sorry young man ! He forgot that we had his name and address from his order form ! The Blonde is not to be triffled with when it comes to business or dishonesty ! Thank you for the compliments on the dvd , I'm glad that they helped , that is what they are out there for ! Say hello to your lady for Kathie and I Donn -

Mike , It's gonna cost you $ 25.00 a week , cash only please ! Otherwise , you are going to have very sore hands and knees doing all of the significant other's floors . Hey ! Gotta make money somehow , Right ? By the way ..... Is extortion grounds for getting kicked off the Forum ? Happy New Year to all , shine or no shine ! The Old Man -
How shiny should shiny be?
LoneWolf15 replied to edward smith's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
To infinity and beyond ! That is where this thread is headed ! Choice of paints , colors , brands , etc , is up to the individual . Opinions on the aforementiond are like backsides , everybody has one . The trick to it all is to become proficient or beyond that with your choice ! This is where the main stumbling block lies ! Too often , hodgepodge advice , cheap materials , and a complete lack of patience / guidance system , produces paint work that looks like something that the cat puked up . Shine or not to shine ? Who cares ! It's up to the individual ! As long as it's done right is far more important, and therein , the problem lies ! Am I a proponent for urethanes , no , I am not ! Have I seen beautiful results with it , yes , I have ! Let me state for the record , however , far and few between ! The fact that it is ultra toxic scares the living daylights out of me . I'm thinking of the youngsters here , real bad juju , without a doubt ! Spraying outside , letting the wind take it , shooting until the odor gets too strong ? Guess what ? It's on your skin and you're breathing it ! By stating this , what are you teaching the kids that are here ? Everyone knows that when you are young you are both invinceable and immortal ,it won't kill me , Right ? Really bad example ! Harry , I'm comin ' outta the closet ..... I want it to be known that I'm an enamel user !Yes , shame on me and Drew , for that matter ! For me , it's strictly enamel ! Why ? , the reasons are endless . The most important , because I figured out how to use it and can produce a quality paint job each and every time !I can do this now because I worked at it , figured out a system / series of steps that I follow each and every time I pick up the airbrush . Do I always use clear ? , no way ! There is a diffrence between factory and street shine , big time ! Depends on what I'm building or looking for with the finish . Do I still screw up ? Of coarse ! But one out of every ten or fifteen , beats every other paint job by a mile ! Everybody needs to do this ! It's not rocket science , it takes patience and perserverence ! Educate yourselves , that is the beauty of the internet , it's right there at your finger tips !The notion that the internet is destroying the hobby is beyond ridiculous , if anything the exact opposite is true ! I want a glass smooth shine on my models , Why ? For the simple reason that I can produce that type of finish and prefer it to be so , not every one can do this ! After all , they are my models , right ? Ya'll can sit here and throw rocks at each other all day long about laquer or acrylic or enamel , won't make a diffrence . Neither will shine or not to shine , that all boils down to personal preference . Now , talk to me about how you produce a quality paint job , you'll have my attention all day long ! I don't mean to detract from the original post , it was a legitimate question , one that should be discussed ! I swear that when I was down in North Carolina that I saw Harry's pet pterdactyl stuck in a urethane paint job , entombed for the ages , right there on the show table !I had no intention of even posting on the subject but I sometimes get a mite bit aggravated when the fur starts to fly or dangerous personal habits are put out there for the younger members to see ! Always think of the newbies or youngsters before you type , you just might be leading the unknowing down the path of sin and degredation ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting -
It is every year ! You would think that they would shift it to another weekend to up their attendance . Right ? Ummm . let me see , NNL East or Cinncie ? Not even a second thought ! Kathie and I booked our room a couple of months ago ! Get with the program , Kren ! And don't even tell me you and Poppa are'nt coming this year ! I hurt myself last year drinking for me , you , and Fo ! Never again ! Riggghhhttt ! The Old Man

What did you get for Christmas?
LoneWolf15 replied to Railfreak78's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thus far...... Some very nice sweatshirts , a fold up cart for transporting the model cars at the shows , complete with tie down straps , gift cards to Dick's Sporting goods , and a couple of new books . Best part of the day so far , the Ex and I watching the youngest opening her Christmas presents ! I will never ever cease to cherish this . Have to work 3 to 11 today . then it is on to Kathie's house to open presents with her and the kids tonight ! O Boy ! More toys for me ! The 30th will be the magical time , all of us together to watch the grandkids open up their presents from us ! Yes , Pap spoils them past the point of no return ! Hey ! Dat's the Granpap 's role in life , and I do such a good job of it ! Merry Christmas to all of you , may the Good Lord bless you and keep you close! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox The Old Man -
Kevin , Trick to this is to scribe lightly ! Trying to obtain the line with just a few passes will just create a mess . Turn on the tunes , hunker down and pass the blade lightly over the panel numerous times. Tedious ? Yes ! However , being patient will be produce excellent results . One other bit of advice , use an old blade rather than a new one . It makes the job easier ! The Old Man

removing old decals???
LoneWolf15 replied to disabled modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)

super glue off vinal tires?
LoneWolf15 replied to moparmagiclives's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sand it off ! A small piece of 320 grit will take it off . Then again , you'll have to sand all your sidewalls to make them look uniform . Once you've done that , I believe that it will become part of your building ritual . By sanding the sidewalls and where the rubber meets the road , it gives your tires a much more realistic appearance . The Old Man -

Improving your modeling skills
LoneWolf15 replied to spkgibson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Steve , While I agree wholeheartedly with what you stated ... The other gentlemen have hit the proverbial nail on the head . Nothing good comes from any of this ,although it should , it just stirs up drama instead . I don't comment, period ! Reason being , regardless of what others claim , the camera does lie . I've seen cars that look beautiful on the forums , then to see them up close and personal at the shows... . A world of diffrence , believe me ! I'd rather praise the build to the individual at the show after I've seen it firsthand . It never fails to amuse me when individuals will attempt to tear down a quality build , yet never put up their builds for the same scrutiny. You will find that many times that these same people are " experts " on every phase of building , giving long winded posts on exactly how to do it. Now , look at their work , they could'nt glue two pieces of styrene together without making a mess of it ! Yet , they reserve the right to be critical of work they could never even dream of producing . Even more so .... the same people who lather praise on certain individuals builds here would be in for a rude awakening if they saw them on the show table. I am not the world's greatest modeler nor would I ever claim to be ! I do , however , have 48 years of experience under my belt which anyone is more than welcome to use anytime they need it ! There is so much talent and experience on this forum , it is mind boogling ! The fact that so many individuals don't take advantage of it is just as equally baffling to me . Sand the sidewalls as well as where the rubber meets the road . Once sanded , the tires will accept weathering chalks without a problem . Don't like the results ? Wash the tire off and start over again.

Better brushes for liquid cement
LoneWolf15 replied to mr moto's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Why not dip the Microbrush directly in the bottle ? Much easier to handle that way rather than the rounded top . You'd also have much more control over where the glue was being applied in tight quarters . Just a suggestion Donn Yost
