While we're on the subject ..... Awhile back I picked up on another trend that twists me up a bit . When someone asks for advice and it is given , people come out of the woodwork to dispute said advice ! They then proceed to offer a mile long dissertation on how they feel it should be done , in their expert opinion. This was beginning to create even more controversy , everybody wants to do battle . Who wants to even bother posting an answer when all they're going to get is grief about it . After awhile , I started going to some of these " experts " websites and Photo buckets to check out their work ! Expert builders , Uh , Uh , ! Posers , Oh Yeah ! Their work makes some of the glue bombs put up on these forums look like Best of Show winners ! What ratchets up my thermostat , the new guys follow their so called expert advice and run right into Murphy's threshing machine with no way to get out . As of late , when someone challenges what I post , I simply invite them to visit my website , come see me at the vending table or look at what I put on the show tables . My work is there for all to see , now , show me yours ! I have never claimed the word "expert" . I simply consider myself well versed in the hobby because of my experience , nothing more , nothing less . I am still learning , and believe me , I've learned alot since I joined this forum . For example , I recently started playing with the Pearl Ex additives , thanks to Gary Thompson and Mikey MC . Would have never known about about it if it were'nt for my two buddies ! We have alot of new guys coming back in to the hobby , some have money , some are on a shoestring budget . They all deserve the best possible advice we can give them , more importantly , the ability to back up what we put out there ! As the tatoo on my left shoulder states.... "Opera non Verba" , Latin for " Deeds not Words " This forum has more talent then anywhere I've thus encountered . It is mind boggling at times ! We need to be the place to come to for all of the answers , car modeling wise . There is too much talent here for it to be anything else ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

Christian, I believe we need to take up a collection to send you to take classes that will teach you not to hold back when speaking on how you really feel ! Well put my friend ! I have far better things to do then get into a donnybrooke with an idiot that wants to fight over a glue bomb build ! Mouth shut , ears open , when being given sound advice , seems to have faded into the black these days . It's not always the individual that posts their build that becomes the problem here . Simply stated , it's all of their buddies who come riding to the rescue that starts the flame wars ! Sad part of it all , they can't glue two pieces together themselves , let alone judge what is right or wrong with a build . There is really no excuse for this these days . There is far too much information and educational tools available these days for these situations to exist. Shame on them for not taking advantage of it !

Carolina Kustom Modelers 3rd Annual --- Aug 21st 2010

Terry , Get out of my thoughts and stay out ! This has been discussed on other forums , alot of the comments here are dead on . Encourging or praising poor workmanship does not work in the long run . I generally keep my mouth shut , it's not worth the hassles that come with it . I just scream out loud at times and scare the daylights out of the cats after viewing the models and the posted comments that go with it ! It seems to help me , the cats ,on the otherhand , not too sure about that. I will leave the vending table to look at someones work when asked to do so at the shows . I tell them what I like about the model and what I don't . I then advise them as to how to improve on the areas that I find lacking . Hey ! , they specifically sought me out for my opinion , they got it ! This has generally worked out well . I believe it's alot easier for an individual to get a mad on over their computer over someones comments rather then having them standing in front of you ! As stated beforehand , If you put it out there on the show table or up on the forum for public opinion , you gotta man up and be ready for the heat ! If not , stay out of the kitchen . Undue praise doth not make a good modeler , it simply creates a false sense of security. I welcome criticism , it makes me a better modeler . The only time I take offense is when it becomes personal , in otherwards , about me , rather than what I put on the table. This generally occurs and comes from individuals that are armchiar quarterback modelers who could'nt glue an engine block together without screwing it up ! They talk the game , they just can't play it ! Ask them to post their work , they back off real quick ! Tip toeing around this does'nt help anybody , not the modeler with glue on his windshield , the people viewing it on the forums or at the shows , and for that matter , my cats ! I think constructive criticism should have it's place here . It's how we all learn to be better modelers. Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

David , Not a problem ! Murphy's Law keeps us all in that state of humbleness ! Like I said , I'm always looking out for the new guys , I want them to stay with us in the hobby ! We have alot of people coming back into the hobby that got out in the ' 60's and ' 70 's and they're are going to need help. You have to admit , it's a whole diffrent ballgame now ! Cultural shock would be an understatement. If I, and everyone else here give advice ,while keeping in mind what we went through starting out , I believe we can help the new guys tremendously ! Keeping their frustration level down and helping them to avoid making expensive mistakes only helps the hobby itself thrive !We have to remember to teach , " Walk before you run " . and that patience is the key ! Have you ever seen a tool as small as an airbrush frighten grown men like it does ? Hey ! , Guess what ? I was one of them ! Looking back on it now , I find it hilarious . Not so funny back then ! This was the main reason we did the dvds , to help other modelers avoid that ! We certainly are'nt getting rich off them , not by a long shot . The payoff is the emails we get on the subject and seeing guys post their work up on the forums . They're proud of themselves and rightfully so ! As for the job , it was a win / win situation except for the loss of the vacation time . We are more restricted as to what shows we can attend . It's taken a bit of getting used to as compared to just packing up and taking off when ever we wanted to . I simply tell myself , " 8 more years , and you can go whenever you feel like it " Be patient, Ya big dummy " You and I will hook up one of these days ! I'm excited about the Karolina show , I get to meet Gary Thompson and see his work first hand and meet a bunch of the other guys from down that way. The only downer is Kenny from Bandit Resin and Terry from M.A.S. will probably be going home with all of my money ! Right ! , Like going home with a bunch of new toys is really going to break my heart ! Try to get to the NNL East in April , I know that there is no place like home , but Good Lord , what a show and fun time that is ! The Old Man -

LoneWolf15 replied to DrewCfromSC's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Brett , As to the allen wrench , that's why Paache puts that little allen wrench shaped space in the box.... So you can always put it back where you found it ! In relating to a choice of airbrush , to each their own ! My eye is always set towards the novice builder / painter that is just coming into or back to the hobby . Too often , the experienced modeler forgets the trials and tribulations that we all went through years ago . I want them to dodge those pitfalls by not wasting their time and money , making the mistakes that we all did ! More often than not , they are on a limited budget and can't afford to screw up 6 or 7 paint jobs trying to get the hang of things . This is the reason I always suggest the H series as a starting point for the beginners . An H series is reasonably priced , parts are readily available , it can take a beating , maintenence is a breeze ,the kit contains everything you need to start out with , and it lays down one heck of a paint job ! For the novice , it is a dream come true ! As for painting the Chapel . who says we all can't ? Believing is 3/4s of the battle . Having good equipment , a sound prep system , a systematic paint method , and a clean paint environment , completes the other 1/4 ! David , Yes , I could do the same with the Badger 150 in a very short time too ! All I'm asking .... Do you remember what it was like the first few times ? Ya gotta admit , cleaning a single action is alot less complicated when it is compared to the dual ! Besides , the KISS principle fits my personality perfectly ! As for Atlanta , no can do ! We were going to attend the show but I changed jobs back in March , losing 6 weeks vacation , and 15 years seniority. Our show travel/ vending these days have been severely curtailed for the time being . Come on up to North Carolina in August for the Karolina Modelers NNL . That's about as far south as we are going to get this year ! Hope to meet up with you at one of the shows some day ! -
what type of airbrush do you use?
LoneWolf15 replied to DrewCfromSC's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
One and the same , Jim ! I love a dual action , used a Badger 150 for decades when I was playing in Trainland . When it comes to model cars , it's a single action . Unless you are doing murals or intricate paint schemes , a dual action is overkill . They require much more maintenence then a single action , which can be frustrating for the novice . Walk before you run ! Buy the single action , become adept with it , if you want to take the step up to a dual action after you've mastered the single , then do so ! I can take apart my Paache , clean it , and have it back together in 5 minutes , try that with a dual action . It yain't gonna happen , Kids ! On a note to the gentleman that stated he wanted to learn to use spray cans first.... An airbrush is nothing more than a spray can . Diffrence being , you have absolute control over it ! You control how your paint is mixed and then applied . It is much easier to mist coat , slowly building up your coats without runs or sags in the paint .. One guy in a factory having a bad day mixing paint for spray cans in a factory is going to spell doom and gloom for the modelers buying the spray cans that were produced on that particular day ! With an airbrush , that problem , which is a common occurence , goes away ! Spitting cans . running paint , heavy orange peal , or the cans not working at all , are now just a bad memory . You control every facet of your paint with an airbrush . Your environment , the mix ratio , your psi rate , etc , all of these things , are now controlled by you ! People make airbrushing out to be some great mystery , it's not ! Develop a system , stick to it , and painting with an airbrush becomes second nature , just like breathing ! Sean. For your prostreet inclinations ... AMT's '66 Nova will provide you with a tubed chassis which can be used on alot of kits . For your prostreeted rods , the frame from the Revell ' 41 Willys can be cut and stretched to fit under almost any street rod kit. Ask all the questions that come to mind , someone here always has an answer ! Donn Yost

Craig , Dixieart.com sells Paache H series kits for $63.00 which includes shipping . Everything you need is included except an air compressor and an inline moisture trap . Don't go cheap , it will come back and bite you in the backside ! -
Ryan, If they are Slixx decals , you might stand a chance . Take a piece of wet T shirt and lay it on the decal , it might loosen up . I do believe , however , that you are up the proverbial creek ! To remove the decals , take a piece of scotch tape stick it to the decal and it will pull it off . It might take a few trys but the decal will come off without damaging your finish. Am I missing something here?
LoneWolf15 replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, You are correct , it would be beneficial to them ! Problem is , creative thinking is not a well known dynamic in the boardrooms these days ! They'd rather try to cut each others throats . You'll never hear about them commiting suicide because they could never make up there minds as to what form to use . Indecision and excuses rule the day ! One well known company in particular that I've dealt with has exactly one modeler on their board , period ! All the rest are bean counters that have no clue as to what is going on in the modeling world . It is truly a sad situation . What is most upsetting , there are people out there who could really help them out and they refuse to listen ! -
As always....Both models show your expert touch , can't wait to see them finished ! As usual .... Your shop and workbench are in their normal pristine condition ! Some day , Little Buddy , You're going to go in there to work and we're going to have to send a search party in to get you because you can't find your way back out !

For those of you who compete......
LoneWolf15 replied to Karmodeler2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Blues , I like what you've proposed , but I think it raises other problems and questions . First off , who decides what category a model is going into , the modeler , the judges , or the host club itself ? That could easily lead to a knock down drag out right then and there ! Outside of the Box Stock category , the fact that not all kits are created equal becomes a problem in itself . A pro stock Camaro kit is going to have much more detail coming out of the box as compared to a '62 Belair . This will have a significant impact on the number 2 or number 3 categories. As for lumping all types builds in a numbered category , this puts more pressure on the judges , not all judges are schooled in all types of builds . In my opinion , you are now competeing against the judges and yourself , rather than your fellow contestants. Consider me old fashioned , but I'd rathet compete within the designated category that I built the car for . I enjoy walking into a show and seeing the divided classes. I also believe that the viewing public feels the same way . Drag nuts , street rod nuts , and so on and so forth , hang out at those particular tables all day long . Local IPMS clubs have come up with something similiar to your suggestion with the gold , silver , bronze , style of judging . This has fallen out of favor with the IPMS ruling body , it is an ongoing mess ! I considered this to be a middle of the road approach to appeasing both sides of the hard core competitors / everybody should win / factions.I do believe that the playing field needs to be leveled between competitors , the judges , and the shows themselves . It will be best for all once it's said and done ! Donn -

LoneWolf15 replied to Karmodeler2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ron, I think that the point system would remove quite a bit of the nonsense that goes on at certain shows . If a well done model scores 25 out of a possible 50 , folks are going to catch on real quick . That is when the host club will be forced to step in and correct the problem . More often than not , the big picture is missed in these situations . While it is a fact that the club is hurting their own future attendance numbers by allowing this to go on , more importantly , they are doing serious damage to the hobby itself . Shows allow modelers to purchase kits , aftermarket parts , decals , etc at very good prices . They either introduce or reintroduce people to our hobby , another important factor ! More people spending money on the hobby leads to new kits being issued ,new parts , decals , etc , becoming available for all to enjoy. Hence , our hobby thrives , everybody wins ! The fact that shows are a great way to interact with other modelers , pick up new tips and ideas , hang out with your buddies , etc , goes without saying ! As to the classes , they should remain the same Judging system can be based on a 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 basis . Points are added up , the 3 highest scores win awards . Those that don't will have a better idea of where their modeling skills need improvement , especially after attending several shows with the same model. The numbers and or results will tell the tale . Judging criteria.... Paint/ Finish , Workmanship , Detail , Authentic appearance ,and Craftmanship. should be mainstays . If you really sit down and think about it , this criteria can be applied to the Box Stock Category without a problem . As for the critical eye , no one beats me up more so than myself. On a regular basis , I am kicking my own behind half way through a build because I feel that I should have approached this or that diffrently . This is the reason I generally build three or four of the same kit . Some day I might be satisfied , but I won't hold my breath until it happens ! If I get beat at a show . it's back to the table for me , try , try again . It's that warrior / competitive mentality that the Marine that raised me instilled oh so many years ago ! Always do your best , be gracious whether you win or lose , and never , ever quit ! The warm , fuzzy , everybody wins , whether they desrve it or not attitude , has no place in the contest arena . You either win or you lose , what you take from it , or do with it after the fact , now that is up to the individual . Bottom line , it should always be handled with class . Sadly enough , more often than not , it simply is'nt ! It gives the entire hobby a black eye and we are all the lesser fot it . Donn Yost -

LoneWolf15 replied to Karmodeler2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I believe that a point system goes a long way toward rectifying some of the problems we all face . If a modeler would score a 9 on workmanship and a 5 on paint work , this would be an indicator as to where the individual needs to work to improve their skill . It would also alleviate the personal prejudice angle that quite a few judges exhibit. Believe me . it does exist , I've witnessed it more times then I would like to count ! I also believe that this would also take alot of the resentment or questions out of the equation that many modelers exhibit or have at the end of the day . If a set of rules were to be laid out across the board for shows to follow , eventually , modelers would start to catch on and their skills would improve with each and every show. If more clubs would adopt this system it would make it easier for modelers as it would act as a barometer , skillwise . If a modeler scores consistently in a 5 to 7 range in a certain category , they would not be able to lay blame on the judges after one or two shows. The blame would fall directly onto the modeler's shoulders where it belongs . Too often , modelers find it easier to lay the blame elsewhere , rather then face their own inadequacies when it comes to certain skills .You might be able to blame a set of judges at one show , but not 3 or 4 . There would be no place to run and no place to hide when it comes to the truth of the matter. Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting -
Blues , Factory stock and replica stock are two diffrent animals , if I'm not mistaken . Replica stock is generally coverd by any subject with corresponding photographs and literature to back it up . In other words, a model that is an exact replica of the photos that accompany the build. Depending on the subject , generally a tougher class as compared to the ordinary factory stock class
