Yer a mean one , Mr Mike ! It's not nice to mention snow and Florida in the same sentence ! I get to paint pretty much when ever I like , no humidity , heat , ehhhhh , not bad . Paint windows kinda suck in Paradise , you are limited ! Shoulda moved to Pa. , Bud ! All 4 seasons , lots more paint window opportunities , and easier access to all of those idolized peers . Most are only a state or two away at the shows ! If I come down , do I get to play with all the toys in your shop or do I have to bring my own ? The Old Man -

Blacking out wheels./
LoneWolf15 replied to dryvr12's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Young Stud , If you are looking to black out Factory wheels , you can always use a Rapidoliner pen. You have much more control with this than a paint brush , The reason I use this method , if I screw it up , I just have to rinse it under cold water and start over again ! Nerve endings are starting to short out in the right hand . To think that I use to paint HO scale figures like they were a dime a dozen , tis hell gettin' old ! The Old Man -
Lane , Take a 6 inch long x 1/2 in or 3/4 in diameter black iron pipe nipple . Fold a 2/12 in wide piece of masking tape about 2 in long and place it sticky side up on the top of the nipple. Fold it over and wrap the sides with another piece of masking tape . Smooth it down until it lays flat on the top . Stick your car body down onto it . This way you can turn your body 360 degrees in any direction when you paint it . Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

Parental Support and Car Modeling
LoneWolf15 replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Randy, We can't vend down there so we will have to pass . No electric supplied so we can't use the dvd player to play the video trailers. They also require 2 days of vending rather than just the day of the show. We will be at the TAM's show in October and the L.I.A.R.'s show in November. We will see you in New Jersey at the NNL if not sooner. The Old Man -
Parental Support and Car Modeling
LoneWolf15 replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ken, My mom and dad were always supportive of the hobby and still are to this very day. I had to laugh about your comment about overspray in the laundry room , guilty as charged , sorry , Mom ! My daughter wanted in at a very early age and traveled with me to many shows over a 6 year period of time . She was well on her way as a builder and was quite talented with the airbrush when she decided that she wanted to pursue other avenues. Softall now rules the day, which is perfectly fine with me ! Now a days , my girlfriend Kathie has become my right hand , she is now building and working with me in the shop. Callie Rae still helps out on occasion , she was instrumental in the development of Donn Yost dvds and lent a hand in the prep work for the shoots . As a matter of fact , she will be in the shop today , helping us to prepare for this Sunday's show in Pgh. Callie still has an interest in model building , I'd love to see her go back to it someday. The memories of her excitement when we were going to the shows , her winning awards , and her passion for the hobby are priceless. I will never forget them ! I now have my nephews and nieces interested , along with Kathie , my hands are quite full ! Parents need to go beyond simply buying the kits and supplies. They need to sit down and work shoulder to shoulder with their child and build the kit with them. They will never forget that time spent together and neither will the parents. The memories are beyond measure ! Donn Yost -

Tom , Testors did make a semigloss black in a spray can ,then along the way, a genius decided to discontinue it ! I always use Testors semi gloss in the 1/2oz bottles. Yeah, it can be a pain to mix it up just for one small piece,but........! What I do to combat this problem...... I prep 4 or 5 kits , separate the parts into zip lock bags as per color / per kit. I shoot all the semi gloss parts for all the kits at one time, then I move on to the aluminum parts , steel , etc. Doing it this way , you rarely miss painting a part. If you cut the semigloss black with laquer thinner , it is dry within 15 min, and the parts are ready to be played with ! As for Testors , I am going to see if I can convince Tom Richardson to put the semi gloss black spray back on the market where it belongs! Donn

Jr, Welcome to the Asylum ! Yes , this subject has been beaten up , however , you deserve the same consideration that all the new guys get around here . This is the first of many opinions that you are about to receive. I prefer Testors enamels. I use cheap garden variety laquer thinner to cut the enamels with at a 2 parts paint to 1 part laquer ratio . For a cost of a little over $ 13.00 , 2 bottles of color , 2 bottles of clear , you will have a glass like finish you can be proud of . It is all compatible , Testors paints are made to be used with the model industry . The laquer thinner warms the enamel , causes it to flow smoothly , dry quickly and tightly , with no loss of detail . Enamels are oil based , acrylics are water based , that is the diffrence between the two . I have found that Testors clear enamel will cover over everything without compatabilty issues . With Testors enamels , you are starting off with a gloss base which clear coat will only enhance , bringing out the depth and richness of the color. Instant gratification ! Use a multitude of light , whisper thin coats , when applying your paint. The fact that you are using an airbrush , puts you light years out ahead of the game . I invite you to visit my website , oldmansmodels.com. take a look around . There is a trailer for my dvd there that will give you an idea of how to apply the enamels . It will also give you an idea as to what colors are available. Welcome to the Asylum , the only place in the world where the inmates run the joint ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

buffing compounds and decals...questions as always..
LoneWolf15 replied to LVZ2881's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
James, I use Novus 2 with small squares of soft t - shirt , followed up with Detail Wax from the Final Treatment. I then apply my decals. For show prep , a little Novus 1 on a piece of small cloth does the trick . As long as you apply your decals properly , you should have no problems ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting -

looking for Dyno Dons 62 Bel Air info
LoneWolf15 replied to Smart-Resins's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Jody, AMT's ' 62 Belair kit is the best kit out there for this project . Decals , you can either contact Slixx Or Jack Smith from Top End Decals . As for reference material ..... Larry Davis ' Super Stock , Drag Racing the Family Sedan can be obtained through Slixx also . Actually , all three of his books are fantastic if you are into drag racing. The books cover drag racing from it's infancy , all the way into the ' 70 ' s with a ton of pictures . The Old Man -
Memory lane, how many remember?
LoneWolf15 replied to RatRod's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Holy Flashback ! Ya'll are killin' me ! Is'nt amazing how many of us had the same type of upbringing and childhoods. Bell's Drugstore , every Friday without fail , my allowance in one hand , my kid brother's in the other. I'd walk down there with my chore money to buy two Matchbox cars for a dollar, one for him , one for me ! Then came the Hot Wheels cars and of coarse , GI Joe , and all of his accessories . It goes without saying that there were model kits involved too . Every birthday and every Christmas , without fail , there were always the latest AMT offerings all wrapped up . Bell's carried the latest issues for $1.49 , spray paint was 49 cents a can , bottled paint was 15 cents a piece. Huge train displays at the relatives home's during Christmas , both Lionel And HO. We had the world by the backside ! Hit 13 and the original Old Man's work ethic took over . I cut grass , taught swimming and diving classes at the local swimming pool ,washed cars and worked at a local pizza shop all the way through high school . Cruised the local Eat n Parks in my buddies 396 Chevelle , drove all weekend on $10 worth of gas . 3 of us bought a ' 55 Nomad wagon , 283 bored out to 301 , my buddie's brother still has the car , he bought it off us our senior year in high school . Drag races all over the country with my cousin and his friends. Pushing the local speed shop's rail out onto the strip , huffin' nitro the whole time. Rolled my first car at 18 , 150 yards from the house dodging a drunk driver , it was Father's Day to boot ! There was'nt a part of that car that was'nt dinged , dented , torn or ripped open . How I survived it , only the Good Lord knows . First new car ' 76 Buick Regal Turqouise Edition , '60's in the back , ' 70's in the front , mounted on ET Diamond spokes . Next was the '77 Dodge Tradesman van. It was a bare box , when I got done with it , it was something to behold ! Bed , wall to wall carpeting , mood lights , crushed velvet cushions , leather captains chairs , etc. It had a 318 with 340 heads out of a 'Cuda , mild strip street cam , Tarantula high rise manifold with a 650 Holley. 50's in the back , 70's in the front , again, ET Diamond spokes . Star Fire Black metallic paint , you could shave in the reflection. Pop called it the whorehouse on wheels . I used to have to pick the girlfriends up in my beater , the parents would'nt let their daughters go out with me if I showed up in the van . Marriage , daughters , divorce , now granddaughters . Back into the model cars for 8 years now. Even now , still willing to try anything new that tickles my fancy. Still crazed , albeit closet crazy now , have to set a good example right ? . Do I remember ? Hell Ya! I'd do it all again in half a heartbeat . You only go through this life once , it is not a dress rehearsel . Live it and love it , every single moment of it ! Harry , I still think Moses got a bum deal , I could swear that it was you that dropped the first set of tablets , not him ! The Old Man -
Hmmmn ! , Don't really know ! But on the other hand , I really can't see why you could'nt. I mix their other paints on a regular basis . Given that all of the metallizers are laquer based , it should give you a diffrent color , but no other problems as far as that goes. Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting

In Line Airbrush Filter
LoneWolf15 replied to pharr7226's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My three filters sit right in a row on my travel stand and I have no significant pressure drop what so ever. The filters do not restrict your air flow . 25 psi at your regulator is going to be the same going in the filters as well as coming out. Hope this helps you out , I am off to the shop to paint a few more bodies myself ! The Old Man -
In Line Airbrush Filter
LoneWolf15 replied to pharr7226's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes, This is exactly what I was referring to . I know , a bit expensive , but if you screw up a couple of paint jobs , you are right there costwise already. Check with Graingers , they also sell these combos . I paid $300 for my set of three which also included the regulator. They might have something a little less expensive. The set up from Eastwood will serve you well for many years if you choose to go that route . Your moisture problems will be over , one less headache off the list ! The Old Man -
In Line Airbrush Filter
LoneWolf15 replied to pharr7226's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The problem with your existing moisture trap is that it can't keep up when your compressor is being run for any extended period of time . It is one of the drawbacks when using the smaller hobby compressors. The unit runs continuosly and produces heat which in turn produces even more moisture. My Badger unit used to do the same thing which is the reason it was retired long ago ! To solve this , you need a bigger inline trap. As I stated in the earlier post , your local Advance Auto sells a moisture / oil trap combo for about $70 . You local Sears store will carry something that is compareable. The unit that I use to travel with comes from Grainger Corp. It consists of 3 seperate filters , 1 for moisture , 1 for oil , and the 3rd serves as a moisture trap / regulator. Some would say it is overkill , but in the 14 years that I've used it , not one drop of moisture or oil in a paint job ! The closer to the compressor that the inline filters are , the better off you are ! You want to catch the moisture as soon as possible and keep it out of your hose and airbrush. If you are in the hobby for the long run , I would suggest you buying a tank compressor somewhere down the road. This is another way of keeping Murphy out of the airbrush booth. As a rule , the larger compressor does not produce as much moisture as the smaller units do . Do not forget to factor in your ambient temperature / humidity / region when painting. This will also play a part in the moisture factor. Hope this is a better explanation. The Old Man -
In Line Airbrush Filter
LoneWolf15 replied to pharr7226's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Put the inline filters right after your compressor and before your airbrush hose and you won't have to worry about involving either of your airbrushes. Local hardware will carry the black iron fittings you'll need to retrofit the line and the local auto parts should carry the inline filters , one for moisture , one for oil. Lindberg '64 Plymouth Belvedere
LoneWolf15 replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Dave, I've built several of these , it is an excellent kit all the way around. It is right up there with the ' 66 Chevelle when it comes to the excellent detail and kit design . The AMT Pro Street Roadrunner chassis fits right underneath the interior and body like a glove , should you decide to go this route. I'd recommend it to everyone ! Roger, The Metallizer with the buffing formula will come off on the fingertips. Buff it out with a soft piece of T- shirt and it will no longer transfer onto your hands. Whenever your playing with this stuff , it is always wise to check the hands before touching anything else ! It's Murphy , Ya Know ! The Old Man

Spray booth?
LoneWolf15 replied to Darwin's Heros's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd venture a guess that you are relatively new to all this ? Hence, the sticker shock syndrome strikes again ! Custom built booths are a bit expensive when first considered. However , in the long run , they save a fortune in kits , paint , and aggravation. Most of these units are made of quality metal , are filtered , contain built in exhaust fans , lighting kits , etc , and with care, will last for many years to come. By not controlling you painting enviroment , you stand to lose a small fortune in botched paint jobs. Add that factor in and you are well beyond the original cost of your spray booth and you still have the same problem. Contact the Pgh. 3 Rivers IPMS chapter, ask them for the gontleman's name who vends every year at their show with his spray booths. They are welded units that are made out of light gauge stainless steel. The prices are fair and the units are made with top notch craftsmanship, complete with lighting , exhaust , filtering , etc. Put your money into your equipment first , your kits , second ! It makes for a more worth while modeling experience overall. Good equipment will serve you well for many years to come. Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting -
George, Quick ! , Go and get another bed sheet . Leddie's slobberin' all over hisself over Gramps over the top mural . That boy is going to drown himself one of these days ! Oh and by the way , you, Cb , and I had a discussion over at the Asylum awhile back. Before we know it , it'll be gettin' cold again. Ya'll know what that means ! We have to take up a collection to buy a helmet for Brian's pointed little head. Remember , he and ice just can't seem to get along. We don't want a replay of last winter's antics , now . do we ? Boy knocks himself any goofier and Nurse Ratchet's meds won't even come close to keepin' the boy on the planet ! Yo ! , Bri ! Missed me ..... Dintcha ? The Old Man Gramps, Great job on the mural !
