  7. Good place to look for reference books would be slixx.com . They carry a set of three books by Larry Davis which cover drag racing from it's infancy right up into the ' 70's. You could'nt ask for a better starting point, a number of others that they carry are just as good. I always raid the bargain bins at Barnes & Noble , there is always three or four there that can be had for an excellent price . Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  8. My two cents , for what it's worth . I concur with the aforementioned opinions ! Donn Yost Lone Wolf Custom Pianting
  9. No problem ! Glad to help. Nothing more frustrating then trying to finish a project and coming up short on a part . That's why I have so many kits laying around..... at least that's what I tell myself ! If you are going to the NNL East , stop over in the vending area. Kathie and I will be peddling the dvd, along with the built ups and painted bodies. Look for the gray haired old goat with the good lookin' blonde . The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  10. Yeah ! , And you'll end up buying more for your grandchildren's stash ! Right? Sorry we can't make it , maybe next time !, we did have a good time with ya down in Richmond ! The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  11. Brent, On page 136 of Larry Davis' book , The Gasser Wars , there is a pic of Mazmanian's Willys with the reddish headlight covers and interior glass. Davis has 3 books out on drag racing . The books cover from drag racing's infancy up into the ' 70's . Slixx.com , the decal company carries all 3 books. They are a great addition to any modeler's collection. You can't ask for better reference material ! The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  12. Randy, Shame on you for picking on that wild haired , four eyed , crazed , midget ! Actually , Jack drove down to Pgh and spent a day and a half in the shop with me when he painted his Frost Blue Jungle Jim funny car. It was cool to watch the light bulb go on as he worked the airbrush. He picked it up real quick ! It's all about the method ! In reality , the dvd is not just for airbrushing , the method can and should be applied to any type of painting , regardless of the material or subject , be it airbrush or rattle can. The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  13. Big Man, You have come along way in a very short time and I'm proud of you ! The Belair turned out beautiful. Your paint work on the last 9 or 10 cars has been outstanding . Thanks for the plug on the dvd , but it seems from some of the posts , you are beating the proverbial "dead horse ". Mr Geary , the next time I use a dehydrator on my paint work will be a first . As for patience ? , I am usually building my cars within a week of their airbrushing , that includes the clear ! Ya'll can rub your fingers to the bone with your laquer and what not , I'll just keep laying out the mirror shine with about a tenth of your efforts . Mr Cruz , you have probably seen more of my work up close and personal from hanging around Jack Bouman then just about anybody . Every single one of those cars are painted with Testors enamels. The proof sits on the tables , on the website , and the dvd itself . If I can do it , and Jack and John can do it , anybody can do it . It's all about the method . With the cost of the kits these days , one can ill afford to screw up the paint work . I can have a body painted and in clear for a little over $13 , that is pretty good costwise, considering what some are spending for paint . No , I'm not picking on either one of you , I admire both of you for your considerable skills. I'll see you both at the NNL East , stop over and say Hi in the vending area. 14. Lone Wolf Custom Painting will be there ! Will somebody please make sure Tom Kren takes his meds . Please ! See ya'll in the vending room . The Old Man
  15. Wrong ! You have an obsession with your obsessive compulsive disorder ! Thou art an exteremely talented , yet , twisted child ! Beautiful work ! The Old Man
  16. Led , Take your other shoe off so you can count higher on the number of acrylic coats needed ! The Old Man
  17. Bob, I would certainly have to agree with your last statement . Compounds have gotten friendlier over the last while back ! They have no choice . Back when we were kids , paint was meant to stand up to a beating and did ! The new stuff , yeah , right ! Breathe on it wrong and factory paint will wilt. Once upon a time , Kids , when you bought a car , and it came with orange peeled paint from the factory , the dealer's body shop would reshoot the panel . For that matter , they would paint the whole car if need be . Back then , orange peel was not accepted in any way , shape , or form . Now , it's a given when viewed by the industry ! Now , in my shop , it's as hated and unacceptable even more so than it was back then . The Old Man
  18. Bill , The Novus system works great with Testors enamels as does Final Detail 's Treatment Wax, It's the automotive industry waxes and compounds that are a big no no when it comes to the enamels . The Old Man
  19. Zack , You have to be careful here. Testors enamels don't hold up under automotive polish. The novus works great , automotive waxes and cleaners are just too harsh . You first need to test it out on a piece of plastic that you have painted with the brand /color that you planned to use on your model. The Old Man
  20. Kyle, I'm going to catch it for this ..... Here is my suggestion. Ask your dad if you can return the airbrush. Here's why.... For the cost of the one your dad bought you can purchase an H series Paache kit with all the goodies that you have in the current one . Plus , it comes with 2 additional heads , a hose that you can actually use, and when the time comes , readily available replacement parts . The H series is a single action brush which is all you really need to start out with . I use the #5 assembly to paint with . It is easy to learn how to use , clean up is quite simple , and it is not cost prohibitive when it comes to parts replacement. From the looks of the gun that your dad bought , it is a knock off of the Badger 150 . At first glance , that is what I thought it was . At second glance , the nylon hose and the hose fitting on the airbrush told a diffrent story. A dual action brush is a great tool , I have several Badger 150 's. They are , in my opinion , not for the novice just starting out . They have far more moving parts , need to be taken apart and cleaned far more often, and have a higher ratio of breakdowns. A single action Paache will cover your airbrush needs quite well . Go to dixieartstore.com if you are interested in going this route. They carry exactly what you want or need . I am only suggesting this to you so that you can avoid the frustration that will come somewhere down the road when it comes to getting replacement parts for the brush that you currently have. Not to mention, the initial frustration that comes with learning to use a dual action brush . I have a dvd on the market on airbrushing , come see me at oldmansmodels.com , take a look around ! 21. Chris , My suggestion, Try a little bit of everything until you find what you are comfortable with . I prefer Testors enamels . When considering cost , variety , richness and depth of color , and shine they can't be beat. Store your fresh paint jobs in a metal cabinet , this eliminates dust and corruption from landing on your paint. Mix your Testors enamels at a two to one ratio with cheap garden variety laquer that you can purchase at the local hardware . Two parts paint to one part laquer thinner, your paint will dry in no time . The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  22. Bigg , It happens more often then I want it to ! It seems the more that I'm out in the paint room , I don't jump as often. It's those periods where I might go a couple of weeks without airbrushing that get to me . A couple of weeks ago, Kath and I were working down in the shop on some new builds. The compressor kicked in and Kath jumped in her chair , smacking her knee off the shop table leg. I started laughing , Big Mistake ! I was baremetal foiling . I had a surgical blade in the knife. When she banged the table with her leg , it jarred the knife and it started rolling. I was paying attention to her, not the knife ! It rolled off the table and stuck up right in the seat of the chair , right between my legs , high up . I was sitting there with my mouth wide open , my honey looked me dead in the eye, and just smiled with this completely evil grin . " Who 's laughing now " Sweetheart " ? she asked. Scary , Bro , Very scary ! The Old Man
  23. Hey ! Who you callin' old timer ? I resemble that remark ! Donn Yost
  24. Chris, I use a Paache H series single action airbrush . The kits are available at dixieartstore.com for about $60.00. You'll need an air compressor , an inline moisture trap for oil and water , and a regulator to adjust your line pressure. It 's probably going to cost you a bit more than $ 200 , however , you cannot beat the paint job that an airbrush gives you . In the long run , you will save yourself a small fortune in paint costs , and have beautiful paint jobs that you won't believe ! The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
  25. Old Man's Two cents..... I use surgical blades that are put out by Squadron Tools instead of the ordinary # 11 blades. They fit into the #11 knife body , all you have to do is clip the end with a pair of side cutters. Be very careful with these scapel blades , they make regular #11 blades look like butter knives when it comes to sharpness ! The blades are thinner and much sharper , giving you a clean and crisp , ultra thin edge , that requires a mere whisper touch as you draw it along the bare metal foil. As for burnishing the foil down , I use cotten swabs. The cheaper the better ! The more expensive Q - Tips work , but leave tiny strands behind that can be a pain to remove . I also tip my blades with black marker , us old guys need to see a bit better. As Bill indicated , the cars from the ' 50 's & 60 's require quite a bit more foil , and patience , as always , is required . My approach to any of these , especially the Tri - 5 Chevys is to do the foil work in pieces , as are the chrome pieces on the 1 : 1 cars . Trying to work an entire side of a '56 Nomad with one piece of foil will have you looking for a quarter in the corner of a round padded room in no time flat ! Refrence pictures are a big help in these situations . 4 or 5 pieces of small foil are much easier to work with , it brings the frustration level down to an acceptable level. Bare metal foiling should be practiced in steps , a novice should not be starting out with ' 59 Impala. Better to start with something simple, say a ' 69 Camaro , and work your way up . Practice will make perfect ! Above and beyond all else , patience , patience , and even more patience ! The Old Man Lone Wolf Custom Painting
