High-end Euro-cars
charlie8575 replied to charlie8575's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm getting some ideas, which helps. As I've been thinking about this today, it occurred to me that someone did a 1980s Volvo 7-series 4-door. I remember it being in a Testors box, but I don't quite recall who made it (Fujimi, perhaps?) If anyone has further input, I'd appreciate it. And I appreciate the input received just far. Nice structure, Carl. I'll look forward to watching this come along. Charlie Larkin

A Volvo P-1800 More Volvo wagons- what car is more iconic? More M-Bs of the 1960s, especially the common cars like the 190 and 220 sedans. The convertibles and a couple of SLs would be nice, too. A Jaguar XJ in any body, but especially the sedan. Some of the Vauxhalls and Opels that were sold stateside by Pontiac and Buick dealers. Saab 92-93-96-99-900-9000 (pre mid-1990s.) A Volvo S80 (I always though those were pretty cars.) I'd like to see the Gunze-Sangyo series of itty-bitty European cars they made in the mid-1980s re-released. A 1950s Bentley Continental A Ford Anglia that can be built stock. A Ford Taunus Citroen DS-19/21, especially a brake. Charlie Larkin

Looking to join/form club in Rhode Island
charlie8575 replied to roush16's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
Hi, Anthony. I don't know if you're aware or not, but we do have a club in Dedham, Ma.(your side of I-95/Rt. 128) in the form of MassCar. I lived in New Bedford for several years before returning to Marlborough, and found there was very in the way of clubs in the SouthCoast/Rhode Island area. And we do have at least two or three guys from Rhode Island, and our president lives in Seekonk. MassCar meets third Wednesday at 7:00 and second Saturday at 1:00 at 150 Rustcraft Rd., Dedham. With that said, if you'd like to see about getting something going down there, it might be wise to post some notices at the hobby shops in Rhode Island (i.e., Newport Hobbies, Apponaug Hobby in Warwick, and I've been told of a small shop up around Smithfield,) and some of the southeastern Mass. shops, like Harry's Hobbies in Norton and the small shop on Rt. 1A in North Attleborough, the name of which escapes me at the moment. Anything else I can do to help, let me know. Charlie Larkin -
I think you did a fine job with this, too. The concept and execution are excellent. What engine is in that? Charlie Larkin

I third Sam and Tony's combined suggestion. Charlie Larkin

I have an idea for a diorama and I need some input from the guys that build foreign, and specifically, European, cars. I'm looking for a model of a 1990s (or so) middle-upper-end European sedan. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Tamiya Mercedes S-class, which would be okay, but I'd like to see if their are some other options. I remember seeing mumbling about a BMW 5-series of that vintage (a little closer to what I had in mind.) Or, something like a Jaguar XJ, M-B E-Class, etc. As long as it was sold in the U.S. Thanks in advance for any leads/ideas. Charlie Larkin

That's great, Dan. I have a '62 Lark too, that needs a little freshening. If I can get my F-85 done, I may get on board with that, too. Charlie Larkin

The Cars of Rock 'n' Roll and Country Music
charlie8575 replied to CorvairJim's topic in Community Builds
"Vehicle" is a great song; one of my favorites. To build a car to represent that, it begs to use something like one of these: 1965 Lincoln with one of Missing Link's outstanding resin sedan bodies. A Jo-Han Cadillac 4-door. A Modelhaus Cadillac, Buick or Olds from the early 1960s, or 1962 Chrysler Newport. Charlie Larkin -
Hi, everyone! Sorry about my lack of attention- things have been kinda loony for me and some other modeling and non-modeling projects have been occupying my time. I pushed back the due date to January 1, 2012, and if we need to again, it can be readjusted. Looking forward to some progress pictures. Charlie Larkin

Sorry I didn't attend to this sooner- other things have my attention lately. I'll update to reflect your participations. Glenn- great add with the Ranchero- thank you. Jim- I LOVE that Corvair! I think what you had happen was the Model Master enamel react with the Dupli-Color lacquer topcoat. I'd suggest using either the Tamiya bottled clearcoat (NOT the spray-you'll have the same trouble,) and airbrush it on, or use, dare I say it, plain old Testors Glosscote. Charlie Larkin

A new '57 Ranchero or Country Squire would indeed be welcomed (or both!,) and a '56 F-100 might also be interesting. Charlie Larkin

Strange business practices?
charlie8575 replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some very legitimate concerns have been expressed here, and they're something that can't be ignored. The explanation regarding tariffs is a reasonable one, and something that I could see as being the motivation for what on the surface is some rather odd business decisions. The whole discussion on globalization is a fascinating topic. Here's a rather neat article on the matter. My link Searching "globalization" at The Freeman also gives some interesting perspective. And otherwise, a brilliant answer I will happily accept. Charlie Larkin

Nice job on the funny car body! Now...I dare you to build one that's street-able (well, relatively speaking...) Charlie Larkin

Jim, I like all your Corvairs (I like them, too, and want a Lakewood like you wouldn't believe,) but I really must agree with Bill, that sport sedan is fantastic. Charlie Larkin

Nice wrap-up, Mike. Following on the Quinn Martin theme... ...who plays McNally on TV?

I've noticed on a lot of wheel backs that the total insert assembly is a bit thicker than the tire, and it seems to be compensated when everything gets assembled somehow. I'd suggest a dry-fit assembly to see how it looks, and if it doesn't work, try sanding the wheel back a little to knock off the excess material. Charlie Larkin

history in the making
charlie8575 replied to evilone's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Amen. Just another bunch of young punks who should be doing productive things- like building models, or learning how to apply their apparently-considerable computer skills to positive applications. I'm so glad I don't bother with any of that stuff...one less problem for me to worry about. Charlie Larkin -
Know your 50s Cars???
charlie8575 replied to MikeMc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I did this a few days ago. Got 100%. I had to think about a couple of hood ornaments and the Mercuries, but I did it. That was fun. Charlie Larkin -
Another great job, Mike. I'm going to have to venture up to CPMC sometime for a visit and look at more of your goodies first-hand. Charlie Larkin

Second that. The creativity on some of these is really great and the workmanship on all of them is outstanding. I'll have something to contribute sooner rather than later, I hope. Charlie Larkin

GREAT job on that wood, Bill! I'm dreading painting my '41 and '48. I'm half-tempted to cut it off and re-make the body with real wood. It might be easier! The rest of the model is just as nice. Excellent work. Charlie Larkin

I like those colors, Mike! Charlie Larkin
