  3. That is a tough one to paint. I have one I did several years ago in silver. It came out a beautiful, very pale metallic rose color. Kilz (at Lowes/Home Depot type stores) has a white spray primer that is supposed to block bleeding pretty well. I haven't tried it on a model yet, so I don't know how much detail it will bury. I've heard it should be shot with an airbrush to avoid those issues.

Many observers have thought that Mercury is on the way out for several years now, since the demise of Oldsmobile at least. Both those articles are about 3 years old; as of last Thursday, no formal decision had been made by Ford. UPDATE: The second link that Harry referenced seems to be updated today, and says Mercury will be shut down in 4Q 2010, and be rolled into Lincoln: Jun 2, 2010 6:25 p.m. Ford is dropping the Mercury brand after 71 years, choosing to focus on the Ford and Lincoln brands. The company announced the plans Wednesday afternoon. Ford says the wind down will occur in the fourth quarter of this year. All warranties will be honored and Mercury customers will be able to get parts through Ford dealers. Under the plan, Ford says there will be no job cuts and the Mercury division will be folded into Lincoln. Mercury dealers will receive information packets on the wind down Thursday. Earlier Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ford's board of directors had given approval to shut down Mercury. The paper also said company CEO Alan Mulally was given the go ahead by key members of the Ford family. Bloomberg News first reported that Ford was preparing to wind down the Mercury line last week. Mercury has been one of the company's three core brands. In its initial reports, Bloomberg said the move was in response to plunging sales in the line. Sales have reportedly fallen 74 percent since 2000. Bloomberg says Mercury accounted for only 1.9 percent of Ford's first quarter global sales. In numbers released today, Ford reported May 2010 sales dropped 10.7% over the same month last year. Mercury currently has four models, two of which were already scheduled to be eliminated next year. A new model that was scheduled to be introduced, the Tracer, will now be launched under the Lincoln brand. It will be built on the C platform, which is the same platform on which the Focus is built. With the elimination of Mercury, the brand joins Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Plymouth as some of the once celebrated car brands that have vanished from the marketplace. The line was created in 1939 by Edsel Ford, the son of company founder Henry Ford. At the time Ford was looking to create a mid-priced alternative line during the Great Depression. Edsel's great grand-daughter Elena Ford is currently the director of global marketing for Ford.

  7. I foiled the reflectors on my Mustang, and used Tamiya Clear Red (X-27?) on the inside of the tail light. I used two or three coats until I got the density I wanted. I used Tamiya's semigloss black on the outside to define the three sections, so I could wipe it with a damp cloth/swab to clean up the lines, or polish as necessary. You could use a Sharpie, but they are pretty unforgiving and permanent. My tail lights compare favorably to your picture, even thought I painted the bottom section incorrectly - the two outboard sections are clear, inboard red. I don't know what I was thinking.... I just looked at your picture of the Bullitt tail light, and it doesn't seem to have the black horizontal bar that the GT/V6 has. I would use the same technique, just being a little more careful.

  9. I like the new Trucks section. Now if you created a Racing Section at the same level as Trucks, and had four subforums - Circle, Road, Off-Road and Drag - life would be good. I agree that all these sections should be used as the On The Workbench/General Discussion threads for that type, and the Under Glass section for all finished models, whether Smart Car or Kenworth. Of course, informative thread titles would help.
  10. I thought GM created the 4.3 V6 by removing 2 cylinders from the 350/5.7, so you would be OK by extending it. Awesome work. The frame is awesome.
  11. Almost all modern sport/sport touring bikes use 17" wheels front and rear. The bigger the bike's displacement, the larger the tires, so I would look for models of bikes larger than 1000cc - the Tamiya Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 pops immediately to mind. You might want to check for diecast 1/12 - I think it's New Bright that has a pretty good selection, and they are sometimes available as a kit at the LHS, some motorcycle dealers, Target, and other fine retailers. They're pretty reasonably priced - $10-15. I've got a nice collection of their bikes. As far as mounting the wheels on the bike, well, that all depends. Most of the 1/12 bikes use screws as axles, so you should be OK there. A little time with a drill bit/file may be necessary to fine tune the fit. Watch the way the disk rotors mount - they mount directly to the wheel hub (full-size and model), and should rotate with it. Calipers mount to the fork and stay fixed.
  12. I just picked one up 59 minutes ago at my LHS. The tires are no-name tires that will fit the rims in many other Revell early 90's kits - the T-Birds, Mustangs and others. Nothing special in the kit - optional sliding/fixed rear window, two sets of taillights, rear roll pan. The decal sheet has stock markings in red and custom in white, red seat inserts, and GMC wheel decals. No underhood markings. It builds a stock version only and is molded in white. The wheels on the box top are what's included in the kit (chrome, of course) with the GMC logo embossed. Nice little kit.
  13. Bummer. I did search the web for the Tamiya stock number, and found that they are skinny wire wheels, totally unsuitable for a Hayabusa. My mistake is I thought the RC-166 was a follow-on to the RC-51, but it is actually an early predecessor (1960s era 250cc 6cyl racer). Gotta love logical model designations....

  15. Tamiya has a set of wheels for the RC-166 available separately; http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=12631 . I'm not sure the Revell Choppers would work - their wheels are 21"F/18"R or something similar and they're fairly skinny. The 'Busa has 17"F/R with wide, agressive tires. What are you trying to do with the bike? Most of the custom Hayabusas I've seen have stock wheels either painted to match or chromed. A few have custom billet wheels built specifically for the bike. Maybe you could remove the centers from a Revell Chopper and mate them to the rims of the 'Busa, or get creative with some Evergreen. The Hayabusa is fairly small as bikes go nowadays at 1300cc, though it's big for a sport bike (most are 600 or 1000). My daily ride is 1800, and the largest current is about 2000cc. However, they put out about half the horsepower of the 'Busa. A box-stock run of the mill 'Busa just off the Suzuki dealer's floor ($15,000) is one of the quickest and fastest vehicles on the planet. 0-60 times are in the low 2 seconds, quarters in the 9's and they are now limited to 186mph (the first couple of years could get pretty darn close to 200). Pretty awesome bikes. Most car guys don't know just how hot bikes are now. Even Honda Goldwings (think Lincoln Town Car of motorcycles) like mine have run in the high 12's/low 13's in the quarter.
  16. Congrats. That's one of my favorites - I was able to test drive a red '73 in 1978. Great car. According to http://www.mgexperience.net/article/evolution.html (and my own memory), it was raised 1.5" when the rubber baby buggy bumpers were introduced in 1974. That website has a lot of good information on the MGB. I'm going to have to dig out my own MGB kit....
  17. Ford added the 4 door cab and SuperCabs both in '73. The cab on this truck isn't what gets me, though. The cab doesn't look too far out of the norm. It's the bed. I remember seeing quite a few of this style truck (primarily Japanese) in South America in 1979. All 4 doors, with the wheel wells being the start of the bed. I thought they were pretty cool then.

  19. The CB was a factory option on my 2007 vehicle. Bet you thought those days were over. It's a Honda Goldwing, and it's got a Honda-branded CB that has handlebar controls (standard on every Goldwing whether the CB is installed or not), and displays on the factory stereo/intercom display. I don't really have a handle. I listen to the truckers when by myself, and talk with other motorcycles in my group. Motorcyclists are still heavy users of CB. Apparently FRS isn't supposed to be used mobile, and GMRS requires a license. I did find a Delco AM/FM/CB/8-track in-dash stereo in the junk part of an antique shop not too long ago. It didn't have anything else, like the mic or antennae. I thought I'd never see one of those again. They were factory options in a lot of cars in the 70's.

  21. Or you can just use Alt-PrtScrn, and capture only the active window (the one in which you're working), eliminating all the cropping. Then you can paste it into Paint, Word, email or whatever software directly. This works great for error and pop-up messages, and other info you want to share. Step 1 would be Press Alt and PrtScreen at the same time, then do steps 2 and 6. Same results, much neater and quicker.

  24. Is it molded in white? I've seen it in stores, but was hesitant because the Little Red Wagon was molded in red.
