  1. I had the diecast 58 (same as the plastic) and wasn't pleased with the engine. Amt has the opening doors, Revell the opening trunk. Revell of course has all the chrome separate. What are the pros and cons? Hopefully I set this poll up right, not much of a preview...
  2. I've been casting (just small stuff) successfully with molds made under pressure and no vacuum. I've also talked to a couple casters who do it part time who have both methods. Don't hold off casting looking for a vacuum pump. You at least get started playing with a pot and using pressure and pick up a pump later when you have the funds or feel the need for one.
  3. I store the molds and resin in the house and the pressure pot in the garage. When it's cold out, I put the pot on a hot plate set just warm enough to touch, I guess you could use a thermometer to be more exact. I turn it on while I'm setting up so it's ready by the time I put the molds inside. I'm not in much of a hurry so I usually leave it on overnight, flip it off in the morning and pull pieces in the evening. The cool down seems to help pop them out.
  4. In the 90s I ordered his catalog from SAE. Big list of really interesting models of course. I called him and he was nice enough. I don't remember our conversation much but I think it centered around the quality because the black and white xeroxed photos didn't really show much. I also thought the metal chassis was weird. I was just getting into resins at the time and never took the plunge. Seeing and reading what I have I'm glad I never did. I had a friend in Germany who ordered probably a thousand dollars worth of cars sight unseen and spent years (and probably still is) trying to unload them.
  5. check here http://resinrealm.net/Star/PriceList.pdf
  6. Huh? Is this link not working? There's 6 videos in it. I'll post them just in case. No one said anything over there
  7. I met up with a friend from the Netherlands in Las Vegas for the lowrider show last month. He brought by his latest projects, the 1/25th convertible is remote controlled (fully wireless) with fully detailed interior, fully detailed, fully detailed engine bay, working hydraulic cylinders with detailed suspension. Does all the moves like a real car does. I dunno how he did it, but all wiring and motors have been tucked away, they are nowhere to be found. The 1/12th is just as amazing, no interior, but not only does it do all the moves, it runs, steers, everything. He has a 1/64 cadillac that rolls, turns, and goes up and down too, i have to dig up that vid still http://www.youtube.com/user/BigPoppaDiaz check out his website too at www.jevries.com
  8. I heard that you can soak the mold in something that makes it expand. The problem is that there is no control on how much it will expand or if the whole thing wil expand evenly.
  9. Denver Auto Modelers meet every 2nd Friday of the month. Hit me up for details
  10. I think it's fair to say Walmart's not sure what the heck they're doing. I have a long drive to work and have hit every store on the way. That's about 10 of them and every one has a different selection of any given kit or supplies. Not all Walmart's have them, but if you find everything in a clearance aisle, I'd say it's a sure bet they're not coming back. That means that they've finally gotten sick of kicking whatever item it was (lately it's been those godawful donk diecasts and r/c cars, Ford vans, and Pirates of the Caribbean toys) around, and want product out of there.
  11. leave it the way it is, whatever it is how about losing some of the pinned topics. I think the July 11th maintenance can go
  12. i stand corrected
  13. I thought the AMT Merc had a Chrysler mill?
  14. Haven't seen many use a modern powerplant, go with the Magnum engine
  15. I started a club from scratch 4 years ago. Best advice I can give you is to get aquainted with your local Kinko's and drop loads of flyers everywhere you think there might be interest, hobby shops, toy shows. Get the name out there. There's only a couple of active clubs I know about in Denver, but we're each with about 8-15 regular members, so 2 out of 7000 isn't too bad a start.
  16. There's one box, red on one side, blue on the other. I seen it at Walmart for $14. I'm waiting to hear the review for it first before picking it up. Also saw an Lindberg combo set for a Dodge truck, flatbed trailer, and 40 Ford for $26
  17. lookin sweet. I'd lose the center caps (so 90s!) and just keep the knockoffs
  18. I'm not sure how you would make a mold bigger, you would have to somehow enlarge the master. But the faster the resin cures, the more it shrinks.
  19. I been keeping it pretty neat since I keep moving it around and I'm not doing big parts. Most of the mess is on a plastic sheet I spread on the dining room table. Also notice the little hot plate in the background of the first pic, helps cure time in the winter since the garage gets cold.
  20. I mix and pour my mold and stick it in the pressure pot overnight. Works fine. my set up. I made my gauge removable, but I can't remember why, maybe in case I have more pots someday. I'd like to make a base to set it sideways.
  21. Dunno about better, but the Johan Eldorados are FWD and the 1976 can still be found fairly cheap.
  22. check out the model section in Layitlow.com. They can be rude and crude and exceptionally hard on newbie's, but it's a great source of info Check out the 1970 Monte Carlo lowrider, it comes with lots of detailed parts that will point you in the right direction when it comes to hydraulics.
