Are We Model Hoarders?
Darin Bastedo replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to think I was a model kit hoarder until recently. I met a man who I promised I wouldn't disclose his name. Who had literally thousand of kits, and almost all vintage really hard to get stuff too. I've lived in apartments his stash wouldn't fit into. -
How about recognising a little good natured sarcasm, did ya notice the emotican, the informal speach. Come on give me a break here. Jeez!

Hey Jim, How about just ignoring the losers and enjoy the good parts of the forum? The Under Glass and On the workbench sections rearely have any tom-foolery on them. as a matter of fact one of the reasons I made this forum my home is the way it's organized it's very easy to ignore the idiots. Leave if you wish but make sure you aren't throwing out the baby with the bath water.

For the most part I really don't care which models win. I go to contests to get inspired and often times the ones that inspire me the most are not the winners. Then there are times when the winning model doesn't deserve it. I can say this because it happened to one of my models. This is my model that won 2nd place at the bays mountain show last year... And here are a bunch of models that in all fairness should have beat it... My model contain a bunch of mistakes and inaccuracies that had I been judging would have taken it right out of contention, but the judges were dazzled by the well done photoetch, including the key in the ignition on a scale key fob. I won because of the gotcha factor rather than skillful modeling. That happens sometimes.

Are real names required or not?
Darin Bastedo replied to Mike Kucaba's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My Real name is Darin Bastedo. I can provide my birth certificate to prove it, but I can't get the long form one. I guess it doesn't matter people would just say I faked it anyway. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I happen to have friends who are muslim. Not all muslims are terrorists, just like not all christians Bomb Abortion clinics, protest soldiers funerals, and kill homosexuals. I've lost a lot of respect for you today. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Let's not forget that more than half of Bin Ladens victems world wide were Muslim. He's not just guilty of the attacks here but also in Saudi Arabia, Bali Spain, etc. There is no sense in offending the peaceful Muslims as well. We are not at war with Islam we are at war with psychopaths who Twist a peaceful religeon for their own purposes. Just like the KKK, the Nazis and the spanish inqusition did with christianity. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It was because Muslim Tradition is to bury their dead within 24 hours of death. To not respect that tradition would anger muslims around the world even those who were not aligned with Bin Laden. the proof that he is dead will be the fact that he is no longer here. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You guys make it sound like they were waiting for an excuse to attack us, like they didn't already before. My guess is that most of them are scattering like roaches. They probably think that if we were able to find and kill Bin Laden there might alredy be a cruise missile headed their way. Up until recently they thought they were pretty slick but they now know we have the ability to get to them any where they hide. But even if some attacks are attempted because of this would you have prefered we do nothing? -
Bin Laden Dead!

He's dead alright. If he weren't they would have already posted a video or photo to discredit us. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You give them far too much credit, in the past ten years they have not been able to muster a single attack of any size on US soil. Every recent attept has been foiled due to our excellent intelligence. The same sources who gave up Bin Laden probably will have no problem spilling the beans on everyone else too. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A world with out this coward and murderer is already a change for the better. anything else is icing on the cake. Let's not forget that because of him, there were people who had to choose between leaping to certain death or burning to death. There were people who had to watch there friends and family die over and over on TV. What we showed the world today is that if you kill americans we will hunt you down now matter how long it takes or at what cost, and we will exact justice. -
Bin Laden Dead!
Darin Bastedo replied to MonoPed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I feel as if a there is some closure for those of us who lost close friends on 9/11. I'ts nice to know that this administration did not see Bin Laden as "Irrelevent". As for making things more dangerous for the troops in afganistan, one of which is my nefew Joey, This is why we were there. The capture or kill of Bin Laden was the primary reason for the Afganistan invasion. Now where did we put that "Mission accomplished" banner? -
Real or Model #164 FINISHED!
Darin Bastedo replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz

The site I pulled it from said they were working on a falcon, but either way the web is full of photos of cars under restoration that you can use. either way it's not like they were doing a Tucker I'm sure they could have gotten the info if they really tried

the fact is though the correct references are available to anyone who knows how to google. to just make it up as they go is just lazy.

I can see what you mean, back in the 70's and early eighties I really enjoyed building MPC kits. They were definitely crude by today's standards and often had simplified details compared to modern kits but they looked okay on the shelf. in the case of this Falcon kit, I'm less disappointed with the body, though I see the flaws in it, and more disappointed in the chassis and engine. It brings me back to the days of building MPC models that kinda guessed at the details rather than modeled them exactly.

A couple of porsche projects I'm working on...
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Here are the front and rear wheels mocked up on the speedster I used the rims from the tamiya kit and scratch-built my own centers. I have to do two more and some finishing work on them and I can move on to finishing the body work. -

Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I've managed to design a new set of wheels for the speedster. They are ment to be a modern version of the minilite wheels. I thought it would add to the bare-bones look of the speedster. I have it posed on my turbo body because the speedster wasn't handy at the moment, but it should give you an idea of how it will look. -
Don't forget that back then much of the kit development was funded by lucrative Promo Contracts from the big three.
-
Actually there is a huge difference between this intake and the one in the Hemi Dart. The one in the dart is merely shaped slightly wrong, The one in the falcon is of a design that would never actually work. that is a big difference. It's like saying that a kit with square wheels is no less accurate than one with the wrong tread on the tires.
-
On the bright side though it makes their Pontaic and nova kits look great in comparison.
-
The Rudge Knockoffs in this kit are excellent, and you remember correctly there is no lug detail. If you ask me this would be up to todays standards in every way except a few fit issues that carefull test fitting and massaging will fix.
