I know there are variations from contest to contest, but I'm looking for a consesus on this issue. I'm working on a box stock build and when test fitted together the car sits higher than the 1:1 car. Now through out the build I've sanded trimmed and filed parts for correct fit, would trimming the mounts for the front and rear suspension to get the car to sit correctly be considered correcting or modifying? To clarify I'd be trimming less than 2mm from the part to get it to sit right, and am not doing radical lowering. simply adjusting the fit so that the car sits correctly. Does that go too far? If so I may do it and add other details and make it a a non box stock model.

I couldn't care less about Japan Vs American... I went Korean! For the balance of Price, Gas Milage, Features and styling, I couldn't find another car that came close to this one. I've been averaging 31mpg around town 45mpg on the highway, and it comes standard with 4 wheel disk brakes. ABS, Traction control, stability control, 6 Speaker stereo with super base, CD, MP3, aux ports USB, and satalite radio, power windows, power locks, keyless entry, alarm system, twin cam variable valve engine, 6 speed auto, with the option to shift on your own, self dimming rear veiw mirror, power, heated exterior mirrors, trip computer, 15cubic foot trunk with split foldown rear seats, and more interior space than a Nissan Maxima all out the door for $18,000.

You are right mark, and I'll add this to the answer. even comparing the same Make and model from today to the ones in the 80's you will find an incredible performance gap. 2011 911 Turbo S vs. 1989 Porsche 959 The 2011 will blow away the 959 as the 959 cannot even come close to 0-60 in 2.8 sec / 1/4 mile in 10.6 sec. 2011 Corvette ZR-1 vs. 1989 Corvette ZR-1 no contest 2011 Mustang GT vs, 1989 Mustang GT, again no contest. The technology advances in the last twenty years in the auto industry have been greater than in the previous 80 years. I currently drive a base economy car that comes with more features, more power, and better fuel economy than the one I owned in 1989 and in todays dollars cost less.

OT: We got a new Toy!!!
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's interesting that you brought up the styling. while styling was way down on our priorities after warranty, gas milage, and comfort, the styling really turned me on too. I feel like I'm driving a concept car, and people have gone out of their way to tell me how much they like it. I think it's about time that a car company realised that inexpensive, and reliable cars could be stylish too. -

Our 2008 Jeep Patriot served us well over the last three years, but we had already pt close to 90,000 Miles on it and it was starting to show it's age, that and with us taking 2-3 1,000 mile round trips per month we needed something with better fuel economy and a warraty. so Saturday we traded in our old Jeep in on this 2012 Hyundai Elantra. On the last trip I averaged 35 miles per gallon in the city and 45 MPG on the highway. It has a 10 year 100K warranty so that should get us through a few years at least. best of all we needed no money down and the payment is the same as the Jeep.

I would agree that if MCM were doing articles like SA did a while back where the would do feature articles on the latest danbury mint model, But MCM is showing us how to take a humble Diecast and make it into a true scale replica. That is modeling to me. But the Title "Model Cars" doesn't just imply "Model Cars You Build" I enjoy the diecast reveiws in the back of the magazine as I also collect and build 1/43 scale stuff, and there is some really neat stuff available in that scale that we will most likely never see in a 1/25 plastic kit.

I'm Mad At Jairus Watson!!!!
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't have a favorite. All of them hit the bullseye for me. -
Here I was planning on buy one, maybe two of Mobius' Hudson Hornet Kit. I figured I'd do a nice replica stock version, and maybe a second Nascar version. Then I saw his sketchpad in the latest Model Cars issue. Darn You Jairus, I'm going to have to do one of each of those and maybe a few others that his inspiration got cooking in my head. Perhaps even a street legal modern custom speedster in my own style. All kidding aside, you did great Jairus, I'm convinced that your illustrations will at least double the sales of this kit.

Highly Detailed GENERAL LEE.... finally done...!1yr and 6 days
Darin Bastedo replied to mopar01lee's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I don't get it, a lot of people here will say when some one asked for color suggestions or things like that they will say "just build for yourself" yet they will tear apart a build where someone is building for themselves. Here they are telling you that your general Lee is innacurate yet this is a fictional vehicle played by dozens of real cars all of which were a little different. If I understand what you are doing is building a General Lee styled Dodge Charger similar to one you would like to do in real life. Sounds ok to me. Every so often I see Shelby Cobra models posted here with paint and interior colors that were never offered or Racing cobras that the markings are right but the model is no where close to being an accurate replica of the real car. Now I'm as much of a cobra fan if not more so, than the nitpickers here are General Lee fans, yet I don't tear down there builds because that is the model they wanted to build. I say Build the model you want. enjoy it and tell the naysayers where they can go. If this were my thread I would delete the whole thing, and simply repost my project pics. Build on! BYW on a personal level I love the work you are doing so far. -
Spyder is derived from the 1890's open topped two seat horse drawn carrages where the rear wheels were very large with small front wheels. The driver sat outside in the elements. Originally Spider that became spyder. The reason for the expression is that the carrage with the small front wheels , narrow body. eye like oil lanps on the front and latge rear wheels looked like a Spider. Europeans modified the word to read spyder.

Making Door & Hood Hinges
Darin Bastedo replied to Fullauto-1966's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I'll try to answer you in order... 1. "A thick piece of styrene with a hole and a wire pin passing through it" That is why I'm doing a Gen II version with metal hinges. 2. "What about the unsightly gap of the inner door panel and door skin?" I admit in the case of the model pictured there was more finishing work to be done. that is why that project eventually was abandoned, but it made a good learning tool. I have another Sidewinder kit that will get Gen II hinges. 3. As for the value of this technique, when I'm done and have published the tutorial, I'll let you be the judge. Use the technique or don't it's entirely up to you. This will simply be an alternative. -

You missed the point. Ijection molding is a high volume process that allows them to do a regular run rather than a limited one. -

It will allow for more production runs. The last time this was re-issued the resin hood limited haow many they produced. The run they did sold out very fast. -
Scam pulled at Michael's stores
Darin Bastedo replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not true. If there was a statute on the books that a business must have a sign present to refuse checks, then he has full authority to enforce that law. Judges can only decide one of three things, whether you are guilty, innocent, or the law is unclear/uncontitutional. -
Scam pulled at Michael's stores
Darin Bastedo replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There already are places that don't take cash as it makes them less of a target for armed robbery. the place I used to pay my gas bill in SC wouldn't take anything but check, card or money order. -

Are We Model Hoarders?
Darin Bastedo replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to think I was a model kit hoarder until recently. I met a man who I promised I wouldn't disclose his name. Who had literally thousand of kits, and almost all vintage really hard to get stuff too. I've lived in apartments his stash wouldn't fit into.
