  1. I don't know why but this got posted 4 times. if a moderator would like to get rid of the three I deleted below that would be good.
  2. Here is a quick build to help me get through my Cobra build sane. It's totally curbside and all I'm doing is adjusting the stance adding custom wheels and de-chroming a bit... Haven't decided on paint yet but is will be something simple yet striking.
  3. I Bought one myself, and I was quite happy with it. I was not hoping to build a stock fairlane, but having the flat hood and inboard lights added is a huge help for those of us with little interest in building another T-bolt. If you ask me these are parts that sould have been in the kit from the beginning to widen it's apeal, but alas it was tooled during the one version per box era. Thankfully the kit manufacturers have realised that having several build options in one box sells more kits.
  4. Tim Boyd & Wierd Al Yankovic... i found this picture and couldn't resist posting it.
  5. Thanks for the comments. I'm getting more and more confident with scratch building. This project has really made me stretch my abilities and come up with clever solutions for some difficult processes. I've learned a lot so far.
  6. If you want to build a 1968 Charger 500, go ahead. Dodge built one too.
  7. Unfortunately it's a common problem with mass production and marketing. It's easy to get a few dozon kits its into the hands of a few reviewers it's another thing to get 10's of thousands into an international distribution chain. Mikes build is excellent, but the kit has some major proportion issues. I'll probably build one to have as a shelf model though.
  8. I've gotten some more done on this one. Today I finished up the passenger door and tried my hand at some hammer and dolly work to create the compound curve necessary to shape the aluminum hood. I still need to do some filing and polishing on it but it is the right shape and follows the contours of the body. In this photo you can see the scratch-built aluminum dash. this was the first chance I've had to mock it up since I built it. In this shot you get a good view of the opened fender vents. Next step is the new improved windshield frame the aluminum piece is shaped like the glass will be and the frame will be built up around it. Hope you guys like my progress so far.
  9. Or perhaps he just wasn't a very good car builder and those were is old projects.
  10. Too True there would still be that Ford vs Chevy thing to deal with, but it would be a start.
  11. In a dream last night a realization came to me... The most war torn regions of the world are lacking something that more peaceful nations have in abundance. Hot Rods! Places like Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia, etc. have no Hot Rods. Instead of sending diplomats and military advisors we shoid be sending speed shops, and mechanics. Imagine the change, "hey, you ready to go bomb the market?" "no the chevelle is running rich and I have to get it figured out before fridays cruise in" "hey we need to use you car for a car bombing" "are you nuts? It took me five years to build it and I have ten grand in the paint alone!" Is it just coincidence that after world war two, the young men came home and after seeing what war could do, started building hot rods/ It was as if they knew that hot rods were the key to world peace. we only have to look at Sweden, one of the most peaceful nations in the world. They have a thriving Hot Rod culture there. look at the most violent dictators in the world, none of them were hotrodders, yet guys like Chip Foose, Ed Roth, Boyd Coddington Troy Trepaniar etc. they never invaded a neighboring country or lead a military coup. We as hotrodders have a chance to change the world. next time you are given a chance to give a gift subscription to hot rod, Car Craft, rod and custom or other hotrodding magazine, send a subscription to a foreign leader. who knows there may be a Nobel Peace Prize in it for you.
  12. You were off to a rough start, but she sure looks sweet I like the stance the paint and the detailing. while you are right that the webers aren't correct for the A Production cobras it would be fine for one of the modified classes. You model is great, and you should be very proud of it.
  13. Thanks Harry, I'm alotted three Great Ideas a year, and I chose to use up one of them on this.
  14. I'm sure I'm not the only modeler who is getting fed up with Ebay. The fee structure is such that it is barely worth it to sell anything for less than $20. I have literally thousands of old car magazines I have decided to get rid of but have realised that if I sold them for .99 cents each and charged exactly the shipping it cost to ship them that between Paypal fees, Ebay listing fees, and Ebay final value fees I wouldn't make enough to make it worth my time to list, pack, and ship each magazine. So I was reading my latest Model Cars Magazine and saw the ad for emodelcars.com and was reminded of the no fee site. But upon going to the site I realised that there were less than 200 Items for sale there and half of those were resin hoods! It's a vicious circle that because nobody lists, nobody buys, so nobody lists. Lets change this for the next 30 days lets all make a pledge to list at least one item each week for thirty days. During this time we'll promote the site as much as we can through posts on here and in out facebook, myspace or other blogging sites to get as much interest in the site as possible. This should be a thriving entity where else can you go to sell models and model related supplies and literature for free? Lets do some spring cleaning, thin out our collections there are over 5,000 members of this forum. If only half of us listed one item a week that would be 10,000 items available to buy in one month. now imagine if all of us listed 4 items per week that would be 80,000 items. That's starting to sound like ebay numbers! What do we have to lose? if the items don't sell, it didn't cost us a dime to try, but who knows we might make some money and start some real growth at emodelcars, com
  15. welcome aboard. there is room here for builders and non-builders alike
  16. This is a car that shows up at our local cruise in, and I couldn't help thinking of it when I saw the Contest issue in my mail box today
  17. I've finall decided what to do with my "fixed" AAR 'Cuda
  18. Don't feel too bad, Andy Kellock made the same mistake in his Bench Racing Column in scale auto. There is a lot of misinformation out there about Shelby Cobras in general you have to do a lot of research to cut through the bull.
  19. Good Start on your build, But if I may, I'd like to help you out with a few basic Items for your build. First the picture below is of an FIA 289 Roadster not a 427 Cobra. do not use this picture as reference for this build. Second I'm assuming that you are building a replica of CSX3002 which would be the only Cobra that ken miles raced, though he did not race it a LeMans in 1965 His ride for that race was a GT40. Regardless here is a link to my fotki albums for CSX3002 That should provide decent reference pictures for you. Third The MPC/AMT 1/16 427 Cobra kit is patterned after a late production street car and is not a true 427 S/C. That is why it did not have the oil cooler scoop. Aside from that there are many small details that while right for the street cobra are wrong for CSX3002 The Kit comes with this style of Taillight... CSX3002 has this type... The gas cap in the kit is the street style (the same type used on 289 Roadsters... CSX3002 uses the larger inset racing version... The kit has a street trunk floor... CSX3002 Has the Larger Competition gas tank so it has a raised trunk floor... Also note that CSX3002 is the only 427 racer with a foward mounted rollbar support as all the 427S/C cars had it running toward the trunk... In the above picture you will also notice that the dashboard is different from the one in the kit. it is a 289 dashboard as this was a prototype not a production Cobra. The one in the kit looks like this... While the front end work you've done is correct for any other 427 S/C Cobra, it is unfortunately all wrong for CSX3002... CSX3002 had a 289 style grill opening, and a different oil cooling scoop. Another hitch in your plan is that csx3002 has FIA 289 style wheels that aren't available in 1/16 scale. An accurate model of CSX3002 would be quite a sight in 1/16 and would really be a challenge but there are easier Competition 427s to replicate from this kit. Here is a link to all my 427 Cobra reference pictures. I hope it helps you. Either way you chose to go I hope I can be of service. I have a vast library of cobra books and data, as well as an ever growing collection of reference photos. If you need any thing feel free to PM me.
  20. Indeed that is the car that inspired my build though I really didn't care for the "dune buggy" look of the bottom half. Mine is not an exact copy but perhaps a production-ized version of the show car.
  21. Well I'm back at the bench with this build, it's been almost 18 months sice I've been able to work on models but during that time I've been able to collect a lot of reference material and spent much time thinking of methods to accomplish what I want to do. I've found great reference shots like these... There are a lot more at my fotki site. stay tuned for updates as I am trying to finish this one by summer.
  22. I'm working on a conversion of the Tamiya 911 GT2 into a stock 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo. I already have some arena red paint for it... Next is also based on the Taniya 911 GT2 kit but this time it's a custom speedter... When I'm done with the modifications I may have them cast if a Resin Caster shows interest.
  23. I might go. A lot depends on what else might be going on.
  24. I don't know where you got your info, but I bought a tracphone for $20 that came with lifetime double minutes, so it costs me 29.99 for 240 minutes plus I get bonus minutes with each card that brings me up to 300 minutes. that works out to about 10¢ per minute. not bad for pre-paid and there is no contract. if you are using it for just an emergency phone that is fine. If you are a real "chatty Cathy" you might want something with an unlimited talk plan.
  25. Peter, how is it that you and I are always working on similar projects at the same time. It's interesting how much we think alike.
