You're going to be in a room full of politicains? leave your wallet at home, and keep an eye on your baby's candy! -
I Talked to someone who has built the test shot of this kit, (a revell employee) that it is awesome. He said that it practicly falls together. I plan to buy about a case of these.

Good Online Source For A Vacuum Pump?
Darin Bastedo replied to Aaronw's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Andy, Both you and Don have given some good advice, I feel that you may have taken his differnce of opinion just a wee bit too personally. I Realise that you and Don have had problems in the past, but he simply does things differently than you do. I have seen & bought products from both of you, and everything I've bought was top notch. That tells me that both of the methods you guys use works and works well. I've studied Fluid dynamics, and when it comes to removing air from a liquid (uncured RTV in this instance) you have two choices Squeeze it out (pressure) or suck it out (Vacuum). The only difference between the two is that there is a limit to how much air you can remove from a chamber (all of it) but you can pump as much air in as the strength of the chamber and the power of your pump will allow. Niether matters as either situation will remove the air from the rubber. Regardless, is this issue really important enough for you two to get into a snit over. the way I see it you guys have two other choices. You can man-up and bury the hatchet (preferably not in each others heads) or you can continue to be two grown men argueing over whose toy cars are best. It's your choice but I know I'm getting tired of the drama. -
What It Takes To Be A Good Model Kit
Darin Bastedo replied to CAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In this case though it was the subject matter, not the quality of the kit that sold the General Lee. You could have sold as many if it were worse, and I doubt you would have sold a noticable amonunt more if it was better. Many of these were bought by people who probably never bought a model before, and probably never did again. -
What It Takes To Be A Good Model Kit
Darin Bastedo replied to CAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's easier to tell what makes a good kit by looking at what has sold well; Revell 1932 Ford kits... Lot's of options, easy to build and affordable. Revell 1949 Merc Custom... Lot's of options, easy to build and affordable. AMT 1957 Chevy (old tool)... Lot's of options, easy to build and affordable. I'm starting to see a pattern here. -
What Would You Wish For?
Darin Bastedo replied to bandit.93's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
11. 1956 Ford F-100, yeah Revell makes one, Guess what? yeah it sucks too. 12. 1930 Ford Hot Rod kit. This would be loaded to the gills with so many optional parts and vintage accessories that most vintage rod modelers would buy them just for the parts. 13. 1969 Mustang Convertible, followed later by a coupe or fastback 14. 2005 Mustang Mach I 15. Drew Hierwarter's '28 Ford Lakes Roadster 16. Vector W8 All these kits would have a parts count around 130 - 160 not counting accesories. They would be detailed but not difficult to assemble, and I would hire real live artists to create exciting boxart, to inspire the builder. -
What Would You Wish For?
Darin Bastedo replied to bandit.93's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
While this isn't so much my wish list as it is, a list of what I would tool if I won the Powerball, and started my own company. Even though this isn't a personal wish list, most if not all I would buy and build. While many add to their wish list the caveat of "Tamiya" Quality, I would be more shooting for Revell Simplicity, along with Tamiya level of fit and finish. Here is my list in no particular order; 1. 1965 GTO. I know AMT has one, but it sucks. 2. Porsche 911 GT2 3. 1929 Ford Roadster, with options to build it to look just like this one. And yeah, as a bonus I'll throw in a scale pup tent. 4. 1957 Ford done in a similar fashion to the 1949 Merc from Revell 5. Aston Martin Vanquish 6. Ferrari Berlinetta Lusso 7. Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder 8. Cobra Daytona Coupe 9. 1935 Chevy Coupe w/ options to build it to look like this. 10. 1962 Corvette Again, I know that AMT made one, but it also sucks. To be continued... -
Question For Mcm...
Darin Bastedo replied to jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you are "over-educated" you are harder to control. the secret to gaining power is keep the masses stupid and passive. If they can't think for yourself, then they'll let someone else do it for them. Why do you think school budgets keep getting cut? When I was a kid all you had to bring to school was Paper, pen, pencil, and an eraser. These days you have to provide everything. My nephew's school list includes Paper towels, tissues and soap. SOAP! I remember when the schools could at the very least afford soap for the washrooms. It is usually either the under-educated or those who wish to "keep you down" who believe you can be "over-educated". These are the same people who Called me "unpatriotic" for questioning the wisdom of the president. (this isn't meant to be partisan, considering that IMHO Clinton was boob sometimes too.) What amazes me is that 1,000s of people a day start smoking, even though it says right on the package thet it will kill you. If that is normal, I'll proudly take my place in the ranks of the "over-educated". -
Sneak Preview: Shelby Daytona Coupe 2
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I agree with your assesment to a degree, but Just like the 1:1 car manufacturer I had other considerations to take into account when designing this. If it was a one-off I would have gone with a more complex shaped rear window/hatch area, but had I done it on the resin master, we would have had to include a vacuformed window piece adding to the price of the body. I chose a thicker spoiler in the rear to balance out the heaviness of the front end of the car. I think that was one of the faults of the series one roadster is that it looks very nose heavy. The spoiler looks a lot better in person. as far as using the Viper parts go, the series one is a much smaller car than the Viper. The lines just don't match up that well. I appreciate the critique though, and when I build my copy of this I may incorporate some of the changes you suggest. -

Question For Mcm...
Darin Bastedo replied to jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Jairus, I don't think harry was questioning your parenting dicisions, but your opinion on allowing the government, in the form of our public libraries to censor the internet. You have every right to control what you feel your kids should be exposed to, but that doesn't extend to telling the rest of us what we can and cannot do. If you are concerned about the libraries accompany your kid when they go. after all most public libraries also have some adult oriented books, but that doesn't mean that they should remove those from the shelves. It is your right to control what your kids are exposed to, but with that right also comes responsibility. It is your responsibility, not the government's to limit your childrens exposure to adult content no matter what form it takes. -
Question For Mcm...
Darin Bastedo replied to jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The lack of fiters for porn is not a policy issue but is a technical issue. there isn't a filter that works that doesn't also interfere with legitimate research. if you don't belive me load one of the "adult content" filters on you computers and try to look up info on Sexually transitted diseases, or sex education. If your filter allows that I bet it doesn't work well at filtering the other stuff either. IANA is working on introducing a .XXX sufix for URLs and if there was a worldwide mandate that all adult site use that suffix, designing a filter would be easy. you would simply block all .xxx URLs. But until that happens we have to deal with keyword filtering, which unfortunately doesn't work with untagged image files and is very easy to get around. -
Sneak Preview: Shelby Daytona Coupe 2
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Cut the roof off a Gunze Daytona? Even I'm not that crazy. The roof rear of the windsheild header is 100% scratchbuilt. This photo shows it in progress before I added the tail spoiler. everything that isn't from the original kit is evergreen plastic. -
Here is a sneak Preview of the master of what I like to call the Shelby Daytona Coupe II. It's a coupe conversion for the Revell Series I roadster. One day I was looking at the Series I kit thinking that the front end looked more like the Daytona Coupe than it did the Cobra roadster so I did this quick sketch of what i had in mind; Don told me to run with it, so after months of scratch building and finessing the shape here it is in plastic; As soon as I finish up the interior, and get rid of the mold lines from the Revell portion that remains, I will be sending this off to Don, to put in rubber and cast up. the filler panel in the rear window will be removed after shipping the master, to prevent any of the bodywork cracking on the way. I'm not sure when it will be released, but I would imagine postive responce at this point would move it closer to the head of the line. what do you guys think?

Here It Is
Darin Bastedo replied to Smart-Resins's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
So lemme get this straight...You are asking for donations. not investment, not pre-orders. hate to tell you this is not how it's done. If a business venture is worth doing it's worth funding yourself. I wouldn't imagine there are many of us willing to give you hard earned money when there is nothing offered in return. -

Model Cars Opinion Poll
Darin Bastedo replied to Jairus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I enjoy Model Cars from cover to cover. I subscribe to both Scale Auto, and Model cars magazine, but I enjoy both for different reasons. I Read Scale Auto, Because many of my friends contribute to it, and I enjoy their articles, but if they were to stop writing I would have no reason to buy it. As far as what my Favorite columns in Model Cars are, I don't have favorites. I enjoy them all. What I like about Model Cars is that it reminds me of what Scale Auto used to be. Scale Auto is too "corporate" it seems to concentrate on the product more than the people. Model Cars has stories about how people build model cars. It's a subtle difference but to me it's an important one. Just about anything I want to know about model cars I can find out on the message boards quicker. I also can contact the builder and get specific answers to my questions on the build. What I like to see in a model car magazine is howtos that I can go back and refer to over time. I also like build up, and feature articles that talk as much about the builder as the kit. The sketchpads and previews of upcoming releases are of interest to me. My only iron clad suggestion to you is keep the magazine "personal" not the sterile buisiness like image that scale auto has. Keeping "Ask Gregg & Jairus" unchanged is one way to do just that. -
That is looking awesome! Keep up the great work!
