I unfortunately am not very optomistic about this turn of events, as when I was a hobbyshop manager, I dealt with Hobbico/great planes as one of my distributers. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten on the back of my sales rep when I would look at the most recent Tower hobbies ad and see that the Retail customer is buying R/C kits from them for less than my wholesale price! Unless they have changed their business tactics, they will be wholesaling their kits to Hobby shops for 8 bucks and selling them at tower hobbies for $6.99

2003 Heritage Camaro Z28 WIP paint update
Darin Bastedo replied to Privateer's topic in WIP: Model Cars
A pessimist see's a half empty glass, The optomist see's a half full glass, and a realist see's a glass that is twice as big as it needs to be. Charles, that is a fine looking model you are building, and I can see by how it looks today that it will be even better when it is finished. I understand you frustration with all the work you had to do to make the resin look like you wanted it. But you would have had to do even more work had your customer brought you a stock Camaro. I'm just looking on the bright side here. I can tell by looking at this body that it would be a tough one to cast especially with that dashboard tab. (as an aside I can where the stock Camaro would be just as tough to injection mold.) As far as anyone questioning you talent I, I can say you've done nice work so far ,and you should take pride in the fact that a few pit falls didn't stop you building what appears to be a really cool build. I do have a few questions though... 1. Are you going to replicate the graphics of the car at your link, and if so does someone alreay make the decals or will you be doing them your self? 2. I know the wheels and tires are pretty wide, are the fenders wide enoughto cover them on the stock chassis or will you/have you done modifications to it? are these wheels the ones you will be using or will they be closer to the ones on the prototype? 3. will you be doing the interior too or will it be stock? Inquiring minds want to know. Like I said I think this will build into a fine model, and I hope to see progress shots on it. I'm hoping to do one of these soon. -
A resin caster and I talked about doing this back when this was released but the sheer number of parts that would have to be cast would make the Resin kit more expensive than a mint original. (plus you would have to sell a lot of them just to pay for the rubber. I have a couple of these, if there is enough interest I would be willing to sacrifice one of my originals to make a simplified resin kit (with out the opening doors and with trim molded on rather than separate) If anyone is interested email me at editor@eastcoastcarnews.com

I have both the car Craft Dream rod and the Tiger shark Modifying the Tiger shark back to the dream rod would Require quite a bit of scratch building as they changed just about everything except the basic chassis. The Dream rods still show up on ebay with mint originals usually going for about $100. while steep it is well worth the money not to have to go through all the work.

Lindberg 1/25 Dodge L-700 & IMC Trailers
Darin Bastedo replied to jeffb's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I think the Dodge Truchk they were refering to was the MPC Dodge Long bed that the Model King was going to release. That one was recently 86ed -
What do you drive?
Darin Bastedo replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's my exciting red hot rod! ok well maybe not. But it does get me to and from work every day, and is great on gas. It's a 1992 Dodge Dakota with 4 banger 5 speed. I try to keep it looking nice and running well, but I could still probably sell the cap for more than the truck. Still it's in nice shape for a 15 year old truck. Hey Chip Foose, if you're listening you can overhaul this anytime. nothing fancy, just a Hemi, 6 speed, big inch Torque Thrusts and some muscle car graphics would be just fine! 8) This summer I hope to find a nice 1966 or earlier VW as a fun car. -
Welcome Aboard! I'm glad you found us. We'd love to see some of your builds if you get a chance.

I think you can list modesty among you skills. Your scratch building skills are incredible.

Building wise my skills lie in bodywork, and scratch building, but I think my biggest model building asset is I'm able to "see" a build in my head and be able to work though it mentally, and know what needs to be done In what order. I'm currently working on a mostly scratch built ferrari roadster. most of the build I can see in my head, now all I have to do is make the parts.

tire scuffing tool
Darin Bastedo replied to jeffb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I complete at the most about 4 models a year averaging 4 tires per car. At the most I have to scuff 12 tires a year. To me it's never been worth investing in a specific tool for it. -
That is so incredibly cool!

I believe I do. My full legal name, the one on my birth certificate, is the one i use as my board handle, which means I don't have to put it in the sig line. so what part of not practicing what I preach are you talking about? -
And now for something completely different!

Yeah, I can hear the wife now, "slow down around this turn! you're going 8 MPH!" -

I'm on board. I'd much rather talk about models than people myself. -

I believe the forum rules state you are supposed to put you full mane in your sig line if it's not you forum name. please do -
Reliable Resin...stripped!!!
Darin Bastedo replied to Marc @ MPC Motorsports's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
The body that Reliable Resins casts is for the Old school 1970's camaro not the current one. I personally prefer the new one but many prefer the old tool. (seeing Marc Nellis' build up of this I can see why.) -

Andy I love that 59 caddy funny car. That is a must have! is it designed to fit the modern Revell funny car chassis? -

Niether one is really my cup of tea, but I would have to see Don's finished to make a choice. I'm willing bet that someone really into drag stuff like Clay Kemp, could have siome fun with either body. -

I hate to tell you but I see a great deal of difference in the two bodies. First the obvious. The nose is completly different. second the rear fender humps are shaped different. They are rounded on your body, and squared off on his. as for the cut-outs for the wheelie bars, I assume both of these bodies were made to fit the Revell Pro-Mod chassis, that they would have to be in the exact same spot on both bodies to fit correctly. Third the roof on Don's corvette looks to be lower and the side window seems to be shaped differently. It also looks to me that his windshield is leaned back further. Now I realise that in this case we don't have too many similar angles to look at, which is why I've asked anyone who has both a reliable Resin body, and one of the bodies he's accused of copying to photograph them together. Most resin conversions I've seen are modfied kit bodies made into a different version, such as a roof swap or a change in trim, and the resin caster calls it his own work. Considering the amount of obvious difference here, even if he did base it on another resin, I think he has done enough work to call it his own. I also think that seeing how the other body isn't even available for purchase it's a moot point anyway. -

The orange car isn't an original master it's simply a kit body with the windows blocked out and the rear fenders modified. Are you going to tell me that that little bit of modification makes it your own work? if that's true the even the smallest of modification to an existing resin body would make it the original work of that caster. this example shows the pettiness of this whole arguement.
