Actually these are the "custom wire wheels" the Borranis have too many wires for the AC wheels. Technically this is not a Cobra, as AC didn't have the rights to that name. They simply called it "289". AC continued to build Cobra based cars into 1969
-
This is based on a Monogram 427 street Cobra. the wheels are from detail master with the knock-offs fron the Monogram wheels. (some don't know but the knock offs in this kit actually AC logos on them.) The AC 289 was built after the production Cobras ceased using the less expensive 289 engine in the coil spiring 427 chassis. In the process they also deteted the sidepipes in favour of the rear exit exhaust.

I took these while playing with my New camara and photo back drop. I watched my friend Drew do some photography earlier in the week and learned alot. Now I need to invest in some better lights and I think I will be well on my way to decnt photos. Oh yeah learning to use my camara would help too. I just stepped up to a Canon A620, from an old PHD (Push Here Dummy) 4.0mp Fuji A340 Here you can see the scratch built paddle shifter behind the steering wheel

I've done quite a bit of work in 1/72 scale in my air plave modeling. I've found that a lot can be done with egraving, and painting, and that if the material used for the linkages are the right scale, that the look of th finished piece will look accurate. I would concentrate mostly on geting the angles right and woring with wire of the coorect diameter, than trying to get all the super tiney details in there. A lot also can be done by using different shades of metalizer to give the impression of separate pieces.

Finally off the bench! Barely 'Cuda
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I think you mean the Charger III. that one has been in progress for a while. and much of the progress is tough to photograph. much of it involves designing and engineering the new drive train for it. rest assured you will se major progress on that one in the next few weeks. -
This is a rare and special moment for me. I've finished a model. Eight and a half months ago I began work on Barely 'Cuda, but the original concept started creeping into my brain nearly 15 years ago. it started out as a sketch I did of Hemi 'Cuda convetible with a chopped windshield and some 60's style mag wheels. As it goes with many good ideas there was always another project that took priority. Then back in January of this year I drew this sketch... The image of it infected my mind to the point that I simply had to start cutting plastic. I pulled out a Monogram 1971 Hemi 'Cuda Street machine and a Monogram Callaway Corvette Speedster. This is what Barely 'Cuda first started out as.... This is what the first cuts produced... As the project progressed, the designed changed quite a bit from the original drawing, I deleted the chrome bumpers, the wheels changed, The AAR hood was replaced with a twin scoop hood, the rockers were altered to wrap down under the chassis, and there is a full belly pan that doubles as ground effects tunnel. I finally settled on a vanity plate for her. I nearly knocked myself out slapping my forehead when I came up with it. It says "PINK SLIP". The dash has a custom dash panel with all the usual gauges, but has a special gauge in the center labeled "License Points". Now that I've caught up the un-initiated with the history of this project, here she is... The finished Barely 'Cuda!... It felt really good putting up an albumn for this car in my "Finished Models" Folder. Thanks for encouaging, inspiring and helping me along with this project. I have a few others nearing completion soon. Hopefully they will be as trouble free as this one has been. Darin

Barely 'Cuda In color outdoor shots
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Nothing on the charger III yet, But I've got three other projects nearing completion there will be a lot of paint & glue flying between now and the 23rd -
While these pics were uploading I laid on some clear coat, but the clear will be curing for a few days before I touch it again, so I wanted to toss up a few good shots of it on all fours and painted.
-
Leave it to me to make a curbside custom complicated. Why I couldn't just slap a flat plate chassis and some wire axles on it and call it done I don't know. I put a Revell Enzo Front end under it and scratch built a ground effects tunnel for it. Those indentions beside the chassis are for the exhast stystem.

I may be cetifiably nutz but the only filler I ever use is Medium Super Glue. It dries hard, blends right in never shrinks, and I've never had a ghost line in my paint. here are some examples... This one obviously has had some work done... The side pipe holes were filled with JUST super glue on this one. I backed it with scotch tape, filled in th ehole, hit it with accellerator and sanded smooth. done in 10 minutes ready to paint. The model is almost a year built and still no signs of ghosting. Painted with laquer... same thing with the spoiler on this Vette...no ghosting a year later.

My Gall Bladder burst today.....
Darin Bastedo replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Agree or disagree, these political threads are like pee'ing in the ocean. the few peole gathered here can build a killer model, but we aren't what you would call Washington DC movers and shakers. Copy and paste your rant into a letter to the editor of your favourite newspaper, and you MIGHT find someone listening who can sway government policy. -
Who would you like to meet?
Darin Bastedo replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Let's see, who would I like to meet? Hmmm other than just about all of the friends i've made over the forums, who I haven't met face to face... in no particular order... 1. Mark Gustavson...I'm sure he and I could have long dicussions about customs and their styling. we wouldn't always agree, but I bet we could find a lot of common ground. 2. Dan "The Class Clown" Peterson man I bet we could have a laugh or two. Ironicly we've been in the same town on the same day several times and I never knew it until later. 3. Bill Geary. I would just like to sit him down and pick his brain, plus with the long conversations we have on the phone, I know we could talk for hours. 4. Billy Kingsley. If anything his pure enthusiasm has to be contagious, and it would give me an excuse to take a vacation in lake george. 5. Tim Boyd. His skill and his knowledge of model car history would make for great conversation. 6. Bruce owen. If I could combine the technical prowess of Bruce, the styling of steve boutte, and the detailing ability of Bill geary I could create the perfect modeler....lol -
Who would you like to meet?
Darin Bastedo replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What do you mean not nationally known? didn't I just see one of your models featured in an ad for a major model company in an internationally distributed magazine? You do realise people who see that don't realise you are just a regular guy who puts his pants on one leg at a time. I bet somewhere there is a guy saying, "I wish I could build well enought to be featured in a model company ad like Billy Kingsly" There are no nobodies in the hobby, and most of the "sombodies" dont know they are one yet. Think about it, all the movers and the shakers in the model world know who you are. That makes you "nationally known" -
This evening I returned home to find that I was reported dead on the Hobby Heaven model message board. Obviously I'm not. There was a thread here also, and Jairus asked if it would be best if it were removed, so that thread is gone. if any of you see any thing elsewhere reporting my death please correct it and let me know. Thanks, Darin

I have started a new online car magazine. I haven't officially launched it because I'm still loading content and getting some of the features functional. But those of you who are into the 1:1 car hobby and want to see how it works here on the East Coast, please check it out. If you are seeking fame but not nessesarily fortune, we are also looking for writers, artists, and photgraphers interested in some exposure. I can't pay out cash at this point but will give credit where credit is due, and will link to your website if you have one. http://www.eastcoastcarnews.com/

Great Model Sar Shop - Store
Darin Bastedo replied to Jeff Johnston's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The owner's name is Jim Amato and yes he is a great guy. Uptown automotive has been around for years. As a kid I never managed to make it to his shop but I used to buy from him at Model shows, swap meets, and car shows. I'm glad you found him
