Sanding for Starters
MrObsessive replied to av405's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You'd want to start with the 220 and work your way up BUT............I strongly recommend taking some liquid glue and spreading it over where you sanded. The reason for this is plastic has a "memory", and when you apply a solvent such as liquid glue, you'll see where you sanded will magically "reappear". I then recommend sanding this area away a second time, to erase the memory, so that when you paint------the solvents in the paint won't cause the ghosting to reappear. This is especially the case when trying to get rid of door handles, molded on trim, etc. Also as Mike mentioned, you'd want to wet sand pretty much through all your grits. I personally don't do this as water tends to "hide" whatever imperfections may be showing up while I'm sanding. It's a good way though to make your sandpaper last longer------------the stuff's so cheap where I get it, I don't worry about it much. As far as stopping at a 600 grit when sanding------------I stop there because in the past, 800 grit was a little too smooth for the paint and I had trouble with paint chipping. If you're using a good enough automotive primer such as Duplicolor or Plastikote, those primers and your color coats should take care of any fine scratches that may show up. At least that's what's worked for me, and my paint speaks for itself. Hope this helps! -

Sanding for Starters
MrObsessive replied to av405's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
First off, welcome! I usually start with 220 grit sandpaper for heavy bodywork, followed by 400 grit, then by 600. This will leave some "teeth" in the plastic to give the paint something to grab onto. Any good hardware store should have the sandpaper you need. Don't bother getting it from the hobby shop----------it's too expensive. I would also look for balsa wood that's easily cut to make sanding blocks with. You don't want to always sand with just your fingers.........this can leave troughs which will show through your paint. The sanding blocks will keep everything nice and straight where you want it. Hope this helps! -
Continuation kits
MrObsessive replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Revell did a very nice snap kit a number of years ago of the '63. One could kitbash that with the '67 to yield a sharp model. -
Forum problem??
MrObsessive replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Okay Jim, I tried opening up links in my email using IE as my default-------and the windows do open up maximized if I previously left them that way when they were originally closed. I left them smaller before I closed them out, and when the links were clicked they reopened in the smaller window. So it may be an XP thing...........I'm not familiar with XP as I never had it for an OS. I jumped from Windows 98SE right in to Vista when I got my new desktop in '07. Talk about culture shock! One reason you may not see IE as I posted on your screen, may be because I have my windows in "aero" mode. This gives you a nice array of colors and such that I don't think are available on XP. Anyway, I think that may be a foible of XP that may not be able to be corrected with IE..............another reason why I like FireFox! -
Forum problem??
MrObsessive replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Granted, I don't have anything on there such as wording or whatnot------when I needed to download IE8 I did so for security reasons. I never did go in and put such things in as Bookmarks, Homepage, other texts, etc. I just don't like IE for anything except that it HAS to be on my system. -

Hey now! Even 120F is way too HOT!! Especially for resin, I wouldn't go any hotter than 105-110F! -

Jim, here's a screen shot of what I see on my screen...............you can see the gear in the upper right hand corner of the pic. That's what you hit if you want to change the settings. -

Jim, if you're running IE8, there's a little "gear" icon the upper right hand corner of your screen. That's how you change the settings. I was looking through mine, and didn't see anything about keeping the windows maximized. For the record, I'm no big fan of IE no matter what version Microsoft comes up with-----------I find Mozilla to be much more user friendly. -

MrObsessive replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Jim, are you using Firefox or IE? I know in Firefox if I close the windows "smaller" they will reopen that way the next time I use Firefox. BTW, I'm running Vista on both my laptop and my desktop and they work the same way. I think IE should work the same way...............try leaving the window maximized, close the browser, and then reopen and see what happens. When opening up links via email, this should work the same way. You could broaden the screen using your mouse to see if the laptop "remembers" the way you closed the window per the size you left it. HTH! -
Kenn, I gotta hand it to you-------for such an unusual car, everything looks very well done and symmetrical so far! Difficult to do by simple eyeballing it! Keep up the good work!

Yup! That's it! I have the original box and all. It was started when I got it with some not so nice glue spots on the "glass" roof--------but it's definitely rebuildable! Hmmm.........Red Lines will be tricky with those tires though.............. BTW, anyone here over the age of 45 remember the Hot Wheels cartoon that came out around 1969-70?? It featured the Sand Crab and the "Jack Rabbit Special". I remember watching that on Saturday mornings and thought it was pretty cool watching the cartoon, and playing with my Hot Wheels at the same time! Thanks to YouTube........here's the intro video!.............

I'll have to see what I could squeeze in. Right now I'm back to building the '64 Olds 442 that I was working on a year ago, but I'm having a MAJOR problem with the hood! I don't know if it's the humidity or what, but the hood won't keep its shape even after I heated it up with hot water. It was slightly warped and it just won't cooperate. I didn't know resin had a memory, but apparently this one does. I have an original Monogram Sand Crab-------that would be a good candidate for this!

Jairus, I too have that exact same Hot Wheel in my collection! Funny enough that I also had a antifreeze Deora back in '68 when they were new. What's hard to find are the '69 Chargers (I have one), and the white painted "Heavyweights" without the paint cracking. My favorite Hot Wheel of all time is the "Sand Crab" in which I have a couple mint originals.

Not a big fan of older Japanese iron, but I like that! And the layout is nice for such a small car! That'll certainly smoke the tires!

'70 Cuda question
MrObsessive replied to Cesar Bossolani's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I second Chris's idea! You're MUCH better off finding the MPC (rereleased by ERTL recently) '74 Cuda and work from there. That can easily be transformed into a '70. They're out there on the 'net as that kit was discontinued not that long ago. Not to step on anyone's toes, but that "redone" '70 AAR 'Cuda by Revell still doesn't look right to my eyes..............reworked body notwithstanding. The problem lies in the roof shape to my view, as well as the hind quarters starting midway at the doors. Even Monogram's '71 never quite looked right to me for basically the same reason. If you REALLY want a nice 'Cuda body..........see if you can seek out Johan's '71! To me that was the most accurate of all of 'em. Testors re-boxed that one not too long ago with metal wheels and such. You'll have to scrounge up a decent chassis, but it'll save you a ton of body work on a model that should have been correct from the get go. If I'm not mistaken, Modelhaus sells the '70 front end and hood for that--------as well as the rear bumper since those are 1/25 scale. -
I've got a bunch of the '68-'70 Hot Wheels in my collection-------------a lot in mint condition. Should be an interesting project! Those Sizzlers sure bring back some memories! I've got a number of those as well-------some run and some don't.

X2 Mike! I've been using that feature ever since I joined the board. You're right that you can't miss a thing by doing that! -
How do you detail brush?
MrObsessive replied to thesnake87's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you're someone with shaky hands, try to anchor your hand with the other hand to keep it steadier. That's better than trying to paint with your free hand in the air shakin' all over the place. Or if that's difficult to do, anchor your wrist on the edge of the table to steady it. That's what I tell people when I'm training them to solder. -
what ebay really means
MrObsessive replied to ra7c7er's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is a very interesting thread! I just got the deal of the year on eBay as I won the other day, the Modeler's Chaparral 2D racer. I had one on my watch page that was going for $135--------saw another one over the weekend and snagged it for $56 plus $7 S&H. Needless to say I'm quite happy, as that's been kind of a grail for me for a while. Except for what I won over the weekend, I don't fool with eBay as much as I used to. That was the first thing I won on eBay in many months! #2 always kills me as that's their "out" just in case there's a SNAFU on their part! I also stay away from auctions that have a mile long disclaimer before they give a description on what they're selling! To me, that's someone looking for trouble if they start an auction like that. Use to be eBay was a real cool place to go to find those special items-------------but as time wore on and computers got cheaper and cheaper, now any 'ol body can jump on and sell something and not be too intelligent about it. Forgive me if that sounds harsh, but I've always figured as technology got down to the level of those with not so smart I.Q's..........this is the sort of nonsense you'll get. ..............And it's not just with eBay, it's everywhere on the 'net these days. -
If it's a '60, more than likely a 98 two door hardtop. The only year that the 98 was made as a two door IIRC by Johan IIRC. Edit: I'd not be as quick to cut that up as those are rare these days-------but it's your call since it's your model. BTW, Modelhaus makes that in resin.

Very Impressive! From starting out with basically nothing, that's an excellent body! Complex shapes and curves aren't always the easiest to do with regular sheet plastic.

I thought I read somewhere (not on YouTube) that the car was actually a Mercedes running through Paris, and the sound was dubbed in to make it seem like it was a Ferrari running. Nevertheless VERY dangerous, daredevil moves that guy did! It's a wonder they didn't chase him down and arrest him on the spot!
