Matt, BEAUTIFUL job on the GTO! That's one of my favorite Ferrari's from the '80's! A word of caution when you get further on the XK-SS..............when building up the "insides" of the car, make sure EVERYTHING falls below the cowl line! This will even include the engine itself! Failing to do this will lead to a hood that will not close! I had to find this out late in the game when I was building my XK-SS which I turned into a D-Type Jag. I was able to salvage the build as I shaved the engine mounts down a bit, and I also remember having to file down the firewall to make sure that it too fell below the cowl. Test fitting every step of the way is VERY important when building the Jag! Hope this helps!

Back after many many years
MrObsessive replied to Davola's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hi Don and Welcome! I'll try to put my 2ยข here...............yes, those small Testors bottles are just that-----for starters. I personally don't care for them as they take FOREVER to dry, and the paints just aren't durable enough for me for the kind of handling l may need to do in the building process. If you have a dehydrator, that helps alot as far as drying time-------but to dry on their own is a long wait. I NEVER use them for painting bodies! I use mostly automotive paints, but that's a subject for another time. Better to use some of the Tamiya acrylics that are out there for detailing, or some of the other brand water based acrylics which dry reasonably well and clean up great with water. For painting bodies, I recommend Tamiya Sprays------a bit expensive but very forgiving and easy to use for a beginner like yourself. As far as putties, I personally don't know of a brand that isn't going to wrinkle your nose with the fumes. I mostly like the two part putties that the body shop guys use such as Evercoat, or my personal favorite, Dynatron Putty-Cote. These both feather edge beautifully and the Dynatron is great as it has a bit of plastic in it..............great for body work where you have to add styrene trim. I'm sure others will post as to what they recommend..................hope this helps! -
I vote also for getting one with a storage tank! I live in a duplex, so I'm very cognizant about making too much noise late at night for the people next door as they have two kids under five. I try to get the tanks full of air during the day when they're up and about-------if I want to paint something at night, it doesn't wake up the whole house next door. Here's a pic of the one I use..........got a real neat deal on it from a club member------only paid $65 for it! Only complaint is that when it's running.........it is LOUD!! Loud enough so that if you're not expecting it to come on, the sudden loud noise could give you a heart attack!

Tim, the OHC Pontiac 6 that Nick used looks like it came out of the old MPC '69 "Trans Am" kit that's been reissued several times. IIRC, the reissues still had that engine and it does build up nice when detailed. Can't say the same for the rest of the Trans Am kit-----thus my previous mention of it in quotes. The body leaves much to be desired shape wise to my eyes. That's one car that's BEGGING to be done as a properly done modern glue kit!

Royal wedding getaway car

IIRC, there was an incident back in the '80's when Princess Diana decided to get up on the hood of the Aston to have a picture taken of her. Well when Prince Charles saw her do that, he absolutely flipped! He screamed at her to get off the hood lest she dent it! I believe the hoods on those things are aluminum (aluminium to the Brits), thus the screaming fit he went into! -
History Being Made

Yeah, and to think we've got May to go through yet! As I type this we have Tornado warnings in the area! Actually just to the south of me, so needless to say------I've got the radio on in case a Tornado warning flares up in my immediate area. I remember that super outbreak of Tornadoes in '74! We had some really NASTY storms come from that system here in Central PA back then! -
Nice Conversion Jim! I've never seen that kit turned into a four door! What roof did you use as a starting point??

Know your 50s Cars???
MrObsessive replied to MikeMc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I got 'em all!! I thought I would be stumped by those hood ornaments, but I got 'em! -
I don't know if this qualifies or not, but it's the only six I've got............. Pay no attention to the "five cell" battery!
-
Terry, '66's wouldn't have the roof pillar vents which the '65 had. GM was trying to clean up the Sting Ray's styling a bit more at this point, so '65 was the last year for those. IIRC, they were the only year those were functional as the '63's and '64's were just indentations in the fiberglass. I can see the roof vents on the model he's shown so it's definitely a '65.

What does "r/t" mean

Yup! Sure was! I once owned a '69. -
That looks like one of Modelhaus's finest! I'm quite sure that's in 1/25 scale------whoever did the original master did an excellent job! Very nice job Michael! I can remember when these were new when I was in high school......I always thought they were very classy looking, but was kinda disappointed when the smaller "downsized" '77's were intro'd. They weren't bad cars-------they just seemed to lose some of their distinctiveness from being shrunken down so much. Not to mention their intro spelled the end of the true two and four door hardtops.

Terrible Kits You Love!
MrObsessive replied to Chuck Most's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually, the Plymouth I mentioned--------I do have TWO of them! If it wasn't for the fact that this is one of my favorite cars of the '50's...........I wouldn't come near it. I know how to fix the aforementioned foibles, and I have the parts to do so-------it's just that I don't have the ambition (yet) to tackle such a MAJOR task! -
Terrible Kits You Love!
MrObsessive replied to Chuck Most's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No one's mentioned this one so I guess I will.............for me it has to be RC2's '58 Plymouth Belvedere. EVERYTHING about that kit is wrong! From the windshield surround to the roofline, to the "bent" side trim that to me is not even close to the 1:1. Only a LOT of work can make that thing accurate, and even then it would be a hair pulling task! I guess I'm biased because my Dad had one of those when I was a kid, so I'm very familiar with what that car should look like. I agree with you on Ertl's feeble attempt at the Roadrunner.................only Johan ever got that car really right! -
Hey! That ain't half bad!
-
Thanks Harry! One detail I didn't do was paint the wheelcover vanes body color. I've seen '61's that had all chrome covers, and frankly I think they look better that way.

OK I'll play! My one and only built Cadillac model..............1961 Series 62 Coupe (Modelhaus)
-
BEAUTIFUL DAYTONA!! I love the stance, and the roll bar is a nice touch!
-
Hmmm............there are some things I see right, and yet some others I see quite wrong! I think I'll pass on this one too...............Better to find the original '64-'65 (I had one but sold it on eBay! ) and detail the heck out of that one. Interesting! I always thought that was supposed to represent a flame retardant suit!

What to do now? =/

Hmmm..............I remember seeing a car on his website that looked a lot like the AMX/2 shown above. That very well could have been the Mangusta you mentioned Bob. I'll bet there's a Hot Wheel or something similar of that AMX/3! Seems like they always do the obscure stuff us plastic junkies don't get!

IIRC, I believe Guido Fieuw (sp) of ScaleKraft made one years ago in resin--------or one was in the works before he had his bad accident. I've not seen one built, nor do I know if he still has the molds/master, or if anyone else got a hold of 'em when he let go of the business. From what I had seen, it was quite nice!
