  1. Echoing what Bob said, I think great photos go a real long way into what type if any responses one will get. I've seen pics of what looks to be really nice models, only to have the pics fuzzy and dark as to not be viewable. So as it's said "Practice makes perfect"! Sometimes I've had to reshoot model pics several times with my digicam to get them "just right".............not to mention running them through my Paint Shop Pro software to get the lighting touched up a bit. My camera is a Olympus D-540 Zoom I bought back in '04..............one of the best "modeling tools" I've bought so far! It's just a 3.2 megapixel type so an upgrade down the road is probably in order compared to the turbocharged stuff out there now! Closeups are great though and it's fairly simple to use.
  2. To add what was already said...........make sure you paint in a criss-cross pattern to avoid "tiger stripes". And count the number of strokes to get an even color all around. Candies can be finicky that way------another good tip is to constantly swill the jar so the paint stays at a constant mixture.........especially true for pearls since the flakes can settle to the bottom of the airbrush jar rather quickly.
  3. Nice build Nick! Your polishing turned out great for your paint! See what a little elbow grease can do?
  4. Hi Paul! Great minds think alike! The only SRT-8 engine photo I could come up with online was the one I posted above in another response. I have a Dodge brochure which has the engine "in the buff".............but that's it. I have a bunch of pics of the garden variety Hemi engine, but they're a but different externally than the 6.1L. Maybe you can try eBay for some other SRT-8 engine pics------that's where I got the one above. If you need some engine bay pics of the regular Hemi (they're the same as the SRT-8's bay) drop me a PM with your email addy and I can send 'em to you.
  5. Hmmm..................I voted model-----something about it says scale model................
  6. That roofline you mentioned would depend on what model Edsel he wanted to build. For '58........the '59 Ford roofline would be closer to a Corsair which was based on a Mercury body. Different windshield frame and all. The Ertl kit is a Pacer which is more akin to the '58 Ford body. Modelhaus makes a '58 Mercury Parklane which would have the correct roof for a Citation/Corsair (body only he can sell separately), but then there's that daunting task of hacking the roof off a resin body and adapting it to the plastic one. Then there's the lovely task of lengthening the chassis and lower body because the Mercury based Edsel's were longer.
  7. Another trick you can do if setting solution is unavailable, is to use a "hot towel" method. Dip a paper or cloth towel into hot water (as hot as you can stand it) and press on the decal contour for about 20 seconds or so. The heat will help the decal to conform. This comes in handy for contours around hood scoops or odd shape fenders. It's also good to keep a sharp pin around to pop those air bubbles that always show up when you're about done!
  8. Gee you work fast! I should work so quickly! The paint looks beautiful likewise the interior and BMF work!
  9. If this'll be available around Christmas time.........I'm gonna start scrounging around for parts to turn this bad boy into a showroom stock '75! This is one of my favorite cars of the '70's along with the '73-'74 Grand Am------in fact I like pretty much all of the 1973-'77 GM midsizers..............they were the first cars I learned to drive in when I had drivers ed in school. Speed the day!
  10. Hey now! Peter you got my undivided attention on this one as it was one of my FAVORITE concepts of this past auto show season! I wouldn't count this one out just yet.......... Ford may go the route that GM's taken and look to Australia for a suitable chassis to use under this bad boy. Ford NEEDS a shot in the arm such as this car as their other stuff is tanking or about to tank! My only observation about your conversion.......(you might be working on this as you see this) The front wheels need to be moved forward just a bit as the concept has a true "cab rearward" look to it. Just like the good 'ole days before front drive scrunched the wheels so close to the front of the door! You maybe can "Z" cut the front fenders just behind the wheelwells and add material back or whatever you see fit. Just the same, I'm gonna be watchin' this one as it comes together! Are you going to make the hood open and add an engine, or keep it a curbside? Keep up the good work!
  11. That's comin' along nice Ismael! I'm glad you're doing that to the doors-----tightening 'em up and all. That's one beef I have with the kit, although I'd do that if I had cut the doors out anyway. I really really wish they would have done a CTS-V though.............that's one that's sorely missing in the new car kit lineup! The sunroof delete is a good idea--------it looks cleaner without it. I thought about doing that to my Magnum, but I think they're standard on SRT-8's so I left it alone.
  12. Spray cans are what caused me to get into airbrushing to begin with! Back in '85 I wanted to build what was then the rare kit of the IMC Cougar II (Actually in the Testors box). I was tickled to build this kit and wanted to give it the best paint possible. I tried to spray can the body with Testors sprays (what else back then besides hot automotive?) and the paint curdled up like sour milk on the body! I stripped the paint off the body thinking it was my fault somehow..................only for the paint to curdle on the body AGAIN, even after I followed all the instructions to a T! In fact the weather was perfect that day................Low humidity, zero breeze, you couldn't ask for more. I decided right then and there to spend the money on the old Badger 250 series airbrush, and have never looked back! That airbrush is primitive by today's standards, but it got me to pay a lot more attention to paint jobs where as I hadn't before. I've never looked back at a spray can for body painting since. Some folks swear by spray cans...............that's nice as far as it goes, I just like the extra control of the airbrush, not to mention not having to guess how much (or too much) propellant may be in the spray can at any given moment!
  13. Finally! 'Bout time you got here! Glad you joined us Jonathan..........post pics as soon as you can when you get a digicam!
  14. The pics aren't showing on my end.........
  15. That looks great! It's nice to see yet another build of this car! I did one a few months back....(elsewhere in this forum) and I don't want to do another for awhile! Your engine bay detail looks good..............more detailed than I decided to do with mine! .................and BTW welcome! Hope to see you post some more builds!
  16. That Pontiac Tempest rod is crazy! For some reason I really like that!!........And I'm not a street rod guy! Really great pics there Steve........LOTS of interesting model material!
  17. Yeah that cake looked mighty yummy! I wish I could have been there to have a couple pieces! And of course, wouldn't you know it------I have to miss the show today too!
  18. Cruz, I decanted it into an airbrush jar first.....(you see those crazy lookin' funnel cups! ) The can has that wacky fan spray pattern which I hate, not to mention I can't control how fast the spray comes out of the can!
  19. No, my dehydrator doesn't rotate. It has the multi layer setup that you can buy extra trays if needed. I have a temp control right on the top of the lid on mine. I suspect the thermostat in yours may be going faulty....................mine is set at a constant 105° and I've never had a lick of trouble.
  20. Kind of a quickie update this time around...............The body finally has some color! I spent some time airbrushing Future Floor Wax onto the bare plastic, so the hot paint won't craze it----and the results are so far so good! Here's a pic of the body in primer............... At the last GSL I picked up a can of this stuff and figured I'd try it out ................I think I may have found a new favorite primer! It dried very quickly, is an actual lacquer (lacquer thinner cut it very well for airbrushing!) and it sanded beautifully. I hope I can find this primer locally...............doing a search on the 'net tells me it may be sold at Grainger's which is a couple miles from me. The color coats went on smoothly and after letting the body sit in the dehydrator for about 8 hours, I then clearcoated the whole works with my trusty Tamiya X-22. In fact, I clearcoated the body parts this morning and took the pics about an hour ago. The body still needs some time yet in the dehydrator, then it's on to the task of rubbing out and polishing everything! With the angular lines this thing has, I'll have to be extra careful around those edges............................ I'll have some time over this weekend to get more done since I won't be able to go to the September Showdown tomorrow, but I've taken a personal day Monday so at least I have a three day weekend! Thanks for followin' along! Edit: Okay, Fotki doesn't want to play along with super large pics now..............so I had to edit the primer pic photo so it'll stay on the board.
  21. I'm not familiar with this model but nevertheless..............THAT IS NICE!! Double nice is the fact that the kit was so fiddly-fidgety! That in of itself should give you great satisfaction of conquering the beast!
  22. A lot of y'all know me but for those of you that don't, I'm the big guy that does the somewhat impossible details with little plastic cars! Anyway, I'm soon to be 46...........(October 10th) so I was born when doowop music was still the rage and tailfins were just starting to fade from the new automotive scene. I was exposed to a LOT of different types of cars as a youngster.........from the normal run of the mill of the time (Corvair) to the extremely rare and strange (Amphicar) which a neighbor owned. My parents divorced when I was around 5.......... but soon after my mom would begin dating someone that I swear had a different car every three months. A '57 Buick, '59 Mercury wagon, '60 Corvair, '60 Olds 4 door hardtop, '58 Rambler, to name a few. He was a state worker and had access to all types of vehicles so I got my taste of riding around in what would be obscure vehicles even at a show today. I got started model building rather late (17) when a lot of guys my age were getting out of it. I started as a senior in high school................and have built pretty much steady since then. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the builds of those first years or so............some I gave away, or were damaged in some way and were tossed out. I've never been married nor do I have any kids so those of you in my position know what that means..............No wife, no kids, = more disposable income. (Models!!) I do have two cats though so I guess those are my "kids"! Clubs I belong to here in Central PA are the CPMCC and the MAMA club which is just over the PA border in MD. My model building tastes run from anything that was on the road in the '60's.....so that could range from late '40's cars to Muscle Cars................all the way to some of the neat cars of today. I do have a weakness for the older European classics and exotics, and I LOVE old '50's-'60's road racers! I work as a soldering trainer/machine setup for an electronics company........I work strange hours too as I usually work third shift, but occasionally need to swing to first shift to train newbies for a week or two.
  23. Dave, do yourself a big favor and buy a dual chamber respirator! Especially if you plan on painting in the house or in a somewhat confined area outside with little breeze. It'll well be worth it in the long run! I paint with a spray booth, and even with the fan sucking out the paint overspray and fumes I still wear a respirator. Trust me-------the extra cost will be worth it!
  24. Welcome! Another good place to find pics of cars is Google Images. Just type in the vehicle your looking for in the field and there you are!
  25. Nice! I would have never guessed that............they look very convincing! I have to pick that kit up sometime!
