  1. I have this Tamiya Light Sand that I picked up to do the dashboard, door cards and center console...I may use it to do the tray as it's pretty close to the rustoleum khaki (at least judging by the cap color)... But will have to get a different shade for the dash and other pieces if I do.... What do you guys think?
  2. so while the black was drying I decided to paint the inside of the roof panel.... And like a noob I forgot to test spray on some scrap to see what the paint actually looks like.... This is rustoleum high gloss khaki....thinking now that I shouldn't have gone with high gloss..:banghead:..... It went on pretty thickly... And I'm glad that I did this piece before actually doing the tray and sides... I don't want it too thick that it hides the detail lines and whenever I look at it, I'm thinking it's too glossy for the inside ....I'm not sure how to 'dull' it down...certainly don't want to sand it as will probably be uneven in spots that I can't reach... Will try to get some daylight pics...maybe it will seem better to me then...
  3. Hey guys, another small update...kinda! So...Thursday night I got home all prepared to start painting the rear interior...wet sanded the inner roof and the tray and inner sides...dried it off properly etc...hooked up the paint booth then I realized I needed to paint the underside of the body first as it's going in black... No problem...I got some satin black Krylon paint :nice: lemme just grab some painters tape and tape off so I don't get back black overspray everywhere... No more painters tape.. so packed it all back up... Picked up the tape last night after work...and got this done...
  4. Hey thanks vintagercr ! More to come soon!
  5. nothing to fancy...just wanted to make it functional without modding the back frame too much... the string will be painted silver to simulate a steel cable (I'm hoping...lol) and I'll crazy glue the tailgate end like a loop instead of that big ole knot..ha! Didn't get chance to wet sand last night so will do that tonight and still try to get the painting done... Some pics...
  6. lol..! Hopefully be next weekend... Got a bit of wet sanding, puttying, priming to do.....then some more again until I no longer see the spots that are bugging me...
  7. Hey thanks mate! More to come soon!
  8. Hey guys, small :update:.... Managed to get in some Sandman time tonight while everyone was focused on the Super Bowl... Easier to spot the areas that need leveling out now as well as areas that need more styrene work and putty... The paint booth works a treat! Was able to paint in the apartment with the fumes filtered and vented out the window.. will leave the body alone for a day or so for the primer to cure properly then will do some wet sanding and then some puttying and more sanding...still have some more tidying up to do around the tailgate frame, but that will be done when the roof is attached. Still trying to decide what calor to paint the tray and the inside of the roof and rear panels. The Sandman panel vans rear interior apparently were initially painted a light grey, almost white, at the factory... But not sure that I want that color. The outside will be done in Tamiya Metallic Orange, so need to get a color for the interior that will go with that... Once I get the rear interior painted, I will attach the roof, then install the side moldings with the drainage area and get the tailgate area sorted, then start prepping for paint... Anywho...some pics...Watcha think?
  9. Hey guys...another small :update: It's been a while since I posted an update, was hoping to have the next one with primer on at least.. .... However, havent had like a large block of time to do a whole lot at once, so just been grabbing 30 minutes to an hour here and there to work on it....and I keep seeing things that need to be addressed before priming.... So, updates..managed to get the magnets installed in the upper and lower tailgates...works pretty good..still need to install the cables that support the lower tailgate when it's open. Made some adjustments to the upper tailgate hinge as well. Also tidied up the area around the tail plights. Fixed the area above the front windscreen, and made the side molding thingies, which includes the piece that runs around the roof where it joins the body. This piece is gonna be covering the join line, so I will have to prime and possibly paint the inside of the roof as well as the rear interior before installing it.. Did some cleaning up around the body and figured out the lines for the doors. Made a template for the doors and I been practicing scribing the door lines on some scrap, just need to work up the cojones to actually scribe the body...lol! Anywho...some pics owhere it's at...Watcha think?
  10. Hey sjordan2, i used Spaz Stix Mirror Chrome paint with their Ultimate Black Backer....it's really formulated for use on lexan bodies, but can be used on the exterior of plastic models as well. However, you won't get the same mirror effect/shine that lexan gives... You really need to play around with the application to see if it suits your needs... in my case it's a major learning curve as its really the first thing that I'm airbrushing ( noob to airbrush lol). I have found that applying the black backer at 13-14psi with a high paint flow, holding the gun about 3-4 inches away, gives a nice wet coat that allows the paint to level out before drying to get that smooth black finish. Still working on applying the chrome paint to the backer...had to use higher psi (25-30) and lower paint volume to mist it on. Reading on the interwebs, most say to mist it on and look for a flash(?) so you know it's enough, but I couldn't figure out when it flashes...lol.. I found that misting it on provides a shine but you can still see the black through it...so I tried adding a proper coat after the mist still using the high psi and low paint volume, but gave it full coverage.... When it dried, I buffed it with a soft clean lint free cloth to get the shine... hope this helps...
  11. Hey guys...small update ..kinda! Got my paint booth sorted. Also major learning curve on the airbrush system....air psi, paint volume, how far to spray from, etc etc... Anywho...did some prep work on the front bumper, trying to get it as level and as smooth as I can... Top looks okay, the bottom is okay but needs more work, not sure if it will get it though..ha! Also got some clear plastic spoons and made 'em shiny...okay for a start, but still trying to work out the psi And volume I need to spray at for the chrome paint...getting closer I think.. Watcha think?
  12. Lol....ohhh there's been lotsa names given to the 1:1 .....Shaggin Wagon....Sin Bin...lol..!
  13. lol...! My version of this pic I found online...the pole still needs to be chromed up...ha!
  14. Getting closer I think....tomorrow I'll give it a wet sanding and a light coat of paint to see the faults...lol! :p
  15. Slapped on some poly putty before running off to work this morning...:lolbeat: Gues we know what I'll be doing tonight when I get home,...
  16. Once the interior lined up properly, I packed it all away again then sanded down the poly putty... Gonna try to get the magnets in to lock the tailgate, then will continue to work on the roof...:o Getting closer to applying that first coat of primer... still a decent amount of putty and sanding required before that happens though....really want to try and resolve any imperfections on the raw styrene before priming and painting... Anywho...some pics of where it's at...
  17. Then I mocked up thr interior to make sure it all lines up with the new side panels....
  18. Hey guys...another small :update: :o Got both new side panels....installed the new ribs with just a dab of bondene at the top and at the bottom of each rib, so hopefully it shouldn't show through or warp the panels :o also re-installed the magnets for the interior side panels. Then slapped a bunch of poly putty over the joins and wherever seemed like it needed to be leveled out...
  19. Hey guys...small update.... Did some thread cutting...... right side is replaced, took the pics when I lopped off the left side panel...should have the ribs back in and the joint area puttied out by tomorrow night... The reason for this....the second pic in post #282...you can see where the ribs are showing through...didn't notice it before...thought maybe it was the light causing it to show through. But when I run my finger tips across it I could feel them, which means it will definitely show up with paint...!
  20. Another small :update: Getting closer...:woohoo: May need to adjust the left side hinge, looks like it's raising the tailgate a coupla mms higher than the right side....gonna try to get the lower tailgate chain and locking magnets in tonight...then I'm back on the roof... Anywho, some pics...forgot to take a pic of the adjustment I did to the hinge pin..
  21. So...anywho.....before I could complete the tailgate area, I needed to get the upper tailgate hinged up and install the struts.. After lotsa head scratching, this is what I came up with....:p Edit - gonna try to mod the hinge pin so that I can remove the tailgate (after the roof has been sealed in) in case the hinge gets damaged and I need to repair it... The strut still needs some tweaking, as this is as high as it will hold the tailgate up...... It has the proper travel length, just need to make some adjustments so it holds it up at this level... I tried to get the hinges and struts as close as I could get it to the 1:1.... Maybe 60% there...lol...but I think I can live with it...:p And how it looks in the closed position....
  22. Hey guys....another small update..! Yeah...I know I been slacking a bit lately...(for the past 2 years..) ha! Anywho...got the front area above the windshield rounded off...still need to tidy up the lip area where the top of the windshield goes...also managed to add in the strip at the rear of the side panel so it's not sloping forward as much as it was before... Did a bit of cleaning up on the right side, puttied some parts, still need to work on it some more...
  23. Holee Crapola !! That's just awesome! 68, huh? Think I just got me a new idol !!
