Adventures in soldering:The GT40 project New pics 2/13/17
Pizzwizz24 replied to Randy D's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This is great!! can't help but wonder what it weighs at this point. Do you have an idea? -
I bet there are a lot of people doing the same thing as me right now.........searching for 1/12 camaro kits to buy. Lol. You've done an incredible job with both of them. Thanks for sharing. Well deserved praise all around.

You've come a loooong way with this kit. Looks great!

Those wheels are awesome! Where did they come from?

This is a great kit Justin. Mine went together very smoothly. Tamiya'so fitment on this kit was excellent. I would love to do another some day so I'm very excited to see how well all the aftermarket pieces will go. Good luck!

Great decals. Love the red stripe look. I always look forward to your builds Tamas.

Hell of a start. Masking on the chassis looks well done with nice clean lines.

I use a piece of glass (like a side view mirror from a car). Place the P/E fret on top of that glass and hold the photo etch piece that I'm cutting with a small square plastic block. That prevents the P/E piece from bending or warping. Then use a #10 exacto blade to cut it off the fret. Use a diamond file (I have the Tamiya file) to gently file any rough edges. Seems to work very good for me.

Gotcha..... Thanks for the tip. Makes a lot of sense to me now.

Michael....... I know you had mentioned installing the headlight buckets to align the front bumper, but I thought you would've removed them for painting. Do you find this to be a simple masking procedure when painting them black or will you just simply hand paint them? I'm obviously just still learning so I'm trying to pick your brain a bit. Thinking maybe it just avoids another glueing process to a finished body?

Go easy on ya?? Looks fantastic! Can't see too close on the wheels but did you do any detail work on them? Maybe could've got some more pop by getting a little depth on them.
-
I agree with James. I would try to avoid sanding metallics.

Why would that be a stupid question? Yes you can get a flat or dull coat from a spray can. Testors, Tamiya and Mr. Hobby are some of the first few that come to mind that I know make them in both lacquer or acrylic. What kind of paint did you use for the Matte Black body? You should do a test run on some scrap decals if you have any. That is if your certain that you want to clear over them. Do you see the "border" of the decal or some discoloring that is making you think about it? I don't always clear over decals on some of my builds. Depends on a few things I guess. Age of the kit, how many or how they lay down are a few reasons. I always try to trim as close as I can to the print and usually use a good solvent like Micro Set or Sol. I hope I don't regret it in the long term but so far so good for me. I know a lot of guys who always clear over decals and would suggest you do the same. So I'm sure you'll get a few different opinions. But either way I can't imagine it's ever a stupid question.

I caught onto this thread a few hours ago and I'm so happy I did. I read through all 76 pages and I am a absolutely AMAZED at what you can do. I am just about speechless! Not much more that I can say that already hasn't been stated by others. You have a phenomenal talent! Can't wait to see more.

Joe....after a second look, I'm really impressed. I started this kit a few years ago and never finished it. I too had issues with the decals. They were "yellowed" and brittle with just about zero adhesion left. Expected from an old kit I guess. At the time I had order a new decal sheet from IndyCals. Cost me about $20 for a new sheet. Unfortunately I never put it back on the bench but your build has definitely got it back on the top of my list. Great job and keep 'me comin!

Ahh......I see. I built the tamiya version and the doors were operational so I was thinking, or assumed rather, that it was the same. I had trouble getting mine to align correctly after shooting the clear (which kinda sucks when you have to make adjustments at that stage!!). Anyways, the more I look at yours....the more I like it. Great job.

I'm with you. Way better than the Orange in my opinion!! Great looking model. Really clean too. Your skills are well displayed on this one.
-
So they're glued shut?
-
Great job. Very clean. Nicely done
-
Looks good. Seems like you got the doors and trunk lid to fit nicely.
-
u There will never be enough of any Ferrari !
-
Nicely done. Looks like you've got a few more that you should show off too!
-
Nice job! Really turned out well. Looks like a super fun build.

Harry -- to put it simply, I am just blown away!! A totally stunning portrayal of a kit that is probably impossible for just about all of us. Fantastic work! Thanks for the WIP also. I was able to take away so much information from that.
