BJ & The Bear
CharlieBravo replied to mackinac359's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I like the Revell one better as the frame is the correct length, it has opening doors and the roof is removable for detailing. As Tim said, you will need aftermarket decals. Jim at http://www.jbot.ca/ has these and they are great. To make it perfect, you will need aftermarket fuel tanks, quarter fenders, front rims/hubs, rear mudflaps. the bumper also needs to be modified a bit. One negative about the kit and I'm still trying out how best to overcome this, is the front panel which houses the headlights is incorrect. this panel should actually continue around till after the step that is under the drivers/passenger doors. The Revell kit panel stops just aft of the headlights. The AMT kit has this correct. This all depends also on how much time/money/detail you want to put into this thing ofcourse. -

I think most of it is tan in colour but the area above the doors which hold the speakers is a cream I believe. This link has a spot where all the factory colours are listed; http://www.streetfire.net/video/bj-and-the-bear-truck-in-georga_117976.htm the paint codes are at the 4 minute mark. -

Looks very nice Gordon. What do you think of the Italeri 48ft reefer? I just purchased one and curious what people think about the kit itself. I was a bit disappointed with it myself, mainly the fact it seems to short in height and lacks any detail inside, the rear doors don't even open! Chris -
What's next from Round 2?

Man I would love to see a new-tooled Kenworth k100 Aerodyne! -
Can anyone tell me what the engine detail is like in the current Revell 1/25 W900 Snap kit? Is it a Cummins turbocharged? Just curious to the level of detail as I'm thinking of getting one for another project. Mainly chasing the turbo setup and things like starter, alternator etc. Pics would be great if anyone can help Cheers Chris

Very nice Roy. That side door looks awesome Mate. The reason I like that trailer is the ribs, much closer to the Brown trailer than the Fruehauf ones which have twice as many ribs. I've read a few criticisms of the Italeri 48ft reefer but I think from memory the complaints are about the length(I could be wrong) but as it's modified to a 40ft, I really think I need to get one. Can't wait to see it in the BJ colours, or as you Yanks spell it-colors!!! Cheers Chris

Hey Roy! That trailer looks great modified. I have the ERTL Great Dane Reefer with side door but the extra ribs need to be added and some heavy mods on the rear. This 48ft-er that you have done has the correct 'ribbing' and looks a tad more accurate. Now I'm thinking I might get one of these as well and modify likewise. How involved is the shortening? I'm at the moment waiting very patiently for some Ben W. wheels to be cast so I can continue my BJ build. Not sure how long they are going to be as Ben said he's waiting for some earlier parts to be cast by his 'man' before he sends away the 10-hole alcoas that I need. Fingers crossed it wont be too long!! I kind of like to build 'in sequence' so don't really want to start the trailer until the tractor is built. The engine is nearly done so I will try to post some pics of that soon. Cheers Chris

BJ and the Bear Truck
CharlieBravo replied to Drago's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The best trailer to use/modify is the ERTL Great Dane Reefer trailer with side door. It also comes with the correct reefer. Ben Wicker 2-hole buds, add the extra ribs on the side and your well on your way. Cheers Chris -
Go Revell for The BJ rig. It has the correct frame length and I believe better detail but alas, no kit is perfect and will need quite a few aftermarket items to make it 'true'. Believe me, I'm making one at the moment and the list is endless. The Amt kit will have its uses, it has the correct quarter fenders for example. I've got aftermarket items such as aluminium fuel tanks, photo etched stacks, Ben Wicker rims ( He's made the correct front wheel too with regular lugnuts but wont be cast until early next year), airhorns etc, the list goes on. For the trailer, the best kit I believe is the ERTL great dane reefer trailer with side door. It will also need mods though to get it up to scratch. Really depends on how much time you want to spend on it and how accurate you want it to be. I need to pull my finger out and get stuck into my Bj rig and update the thread, hoping to start Army pilot training early next year so have been very busy of late with all that goes with that process but that's a whole new thread!! Any more 'Bj and the Bear' questions, just ask mate Cheers Chris

BJ and the Bear 1/25
CharlieBravo replied to CharlieBravo's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks Cam. The bolts weren't as painstaking as I thought, just used some hex-shaped platic rod, cut off small bits, then sanded them down carefully after they were glued. Cheers Chris -
Hey Guys, Looking for a set of alcoas off the W900 snap kits, particularly the front ones but would like the set. Anyone got some to part with/sell/trade? Here's a pic of the ones I need. The ones off these snap kits look highly detailed and just what I need for my Bj build!! Cheers, Chris

More Engine work today. (I know, I know, I'm the slowest modeler in the world!) Wasn't happy with my last attempts on the cylinder head cover area so started from scratch and made a complete new one. Old attempt; New work; adding some bolts; Still need to sand down the bolts more This kit has a twin turbo set up. I needed to modify one for the single turbo setup as they were back-to-front if you know what I mean. Blue one is the original. I had to cut up the yellow one and rejoin in reverse. Cheers Chris -

1980 Kenworth W900
CharlieBravo replied to Jim B's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Sorry if this is a stupid question but is this 1/25 scale or 1/16? If 1/25, where'd you get those front alcoas? They look sharp! Nice build. Chris -
Hey Guys. Wondering if anyone has a spare Cummins engine turbo from the AMT W925 Kenworth 1/25 kit to sell or trade? I'm really only chasing the turbo and connecting bits, I've hit a snag with my "Bj and the Bear" Build as the Revell K100 kit Cummins is a twin turbo setup. I need the single setup which is what the Bj Kenny had. Just thought I'd throw this one out there Cheers Chris
