No accounting for taste!
Smart-Resins replied to Modelmartin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well there are several train of thoughts here. Looking at the background wich I can not "sea" much of, it appears as though a art gallery. Considering the location, the dolphin subject is a befitting subject. Considering a art gallery, the chances are the artist was more likely(percentage wise) a female. So it again seams beffitting!! Just a very expensive art easle!! One that the artist can drive around for a little while until they decide to do another paint job on it. I have seen some lowriders and tuners with some very loud and noisy paint jobs that I certainly would prefer to have puked on!! However each artist or owner views things differently. That subject is just a reminder of how differently I see things and lets me appreciate my work much more!! -
Who will continue when we die?
Smart-Resins replied to Luis Ayala's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I fear not. I am only one in my family who liked models and ended up sooner or later sticking with it. From me, I have three surviving children. Right now my 7 year old daughter is already building and enjoying it. My 5 year old son wants to, but not quite old enough yet, though here soon he will get his first for his birthday. My youngest son,4 has no interest in models yet, but he is the only one who has interestsi n real cars, almost worst then me so I know it is inevidable for him! If one looks at raw statistics, you will see that the hobby is growing.Perhaps the percentage of hobbyists is decreasing, but the number of poeple on the planet is constantly increasing, thus still allowing the hobby to grow. I think by the time that it really is ready to die, we wont have to worry about it!! Either the glue will cause too much toxins so the hobby will be outlawed, or we will have killed everyone. -
So far someveryinteresting stories! I bought a badly glued green hornet long long time ago and thought that was a very nice kit for its age. Maybe some day Ill find another one. Bob, I seem to remember hearing that before? Keep them stories coming.

Just wondering what what made you decide to make your first model? Then why did you continue? If you ever left the hobby, why and what brought you back? Last what model/memory is your fondest? I was given a 1/16 mustang for Christmas when I was a little boy. Ruined many models there after! I finally decided to enter a show. I placed 3rd..... out of 3. The othertow were so dog gone good, mine was garbage!! That was the end for me! Finally after many many years I decided to buy a Big T. In the last year I have bought a few kits and ruined them too trying to hard to scratch build everything and making it too perfect. Finally gave them away and started over with some 1/16ths and a couple of bikes.Making sure I keep my mods to a minimum. Now I am hooked and also took best of class not too long ago on a bike build! My fondest memory was just recently when I helped mydaughter hand in hand do her first completemodel, another bike, that she took best junior award with and first place in class with at the same show!!

Here is a RM chopper trike done a cross between 70's custom and modern custom. Sprayed dupli-kolor orenge mist over copper over grey high build primer. Bearing a cast leather saddle seat and part of the cast primary belt drive. Forks were scratched plastic rod to extend them as is the 5 part rear axle. The bars are scratched hand bent brass tube and the tank was dropped scale 4 inches in the front. not much left but finishing the motor, making seat mount and finish casting the rest of the belt drive.

Here is my resin cast take of a old leather saddle style seat. Needs slight cleaning, but not too bad for a 2 part mold. I garuntee decent castings for your money. no garbage here. Asking $5 plus your choice of postage. I would recomend bubble envelope first class mail. Heres pics of the seats. Soon be adding primary real belt drives as well. Thanks for your time. Jody The last is a quick mock up on bike in brown without any springs. If you use this on one of the bikes that did not come with a saddle seat you will need to fabricate your own mounts. Otherwise there should be no adjustments needed. The first pic shows a brown painted seat next to the raw resin seat. Thanks.

now that is different!

With a bunch of tender care and a ton of patience and a lot more drinks, you could revive that poor thing. Good luck with it. I know it is screaming to be refinished and hot rodded modestly!!

I agree Ken that statement as I read it too cought me by surprise.I have dablled some in many areas including R/C wich I hope I dont sound offensive here to anyone, just my opinion, but stuff like race car tracks and r/cs always seamed to be no more then over priced toys for those who wish to see how much they can spend. For me modeling is it.I get to create something of my own useing my own talent and giving it my own persona in the build and enjoy the results.Likewise I can builtd the same thing 5 times and not have any of them the same. For them to make that statement appears to me as though they think models are just kids play.Dont say that to any militia modeler.I know these guys down south here take that very seriously!!

molding rubber help
Smart-Resins replied to Lownslow's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I am not really sure how thin you are trying to get the rubber, but I know I use alumilit rubber and rsin and love the stuff. For casting I always make sure I either warm my mold in the oven for 15-20 minutes at about 145 degrees then talc it before pouring. If I am in a hurry or the wif is cooking then I warm it on high in the micro wave for 1 minute. However it tends to cool down faster this way. Also while pouring the resin or rubber in I also tap the mold a couple of times and give it a gentl sqeeze once or twice to make sure the air comes out.I end up with pretty good results this way!I have a primary belt drive system that i just did for the RM Kustom choppers this way and it came out great.I am waiting to see how my first casted tire comes out in the next couple of days. That will tell me if theres any flaws in my method of madness! -
Very nice indeed!! I really love that thing.I have a 1/16 vw I am considering doing aa style. Was thinking full fendered with extended nose, but now you have me thinking!!Great color too!!

visionary and dreamer those are my assets to my hobby thus why I enjoy it so much.I can scratch build and work with brass, but doing too much and it slows the project down too much and I loose interest. The build has to be fairly simple to keep me on track.Just now getting good at paint and starting to do some wiring.I enjoy the larger scales so the scratch building and detailing is easier.Oh ya, I do love those aa motors!!

Personally I use the testors decal spray onmine, but usually buy the paper on Ebay.I use a canon fine inkjet and does great work.Just use a good photo shop and print as a glossy picture.I wouldnt mind seeing what he may have for pony decals though!!

Thank you very much for the kind words. She will be very pleased to hear that!!

Well getting started on this. Taking the front lower portion of the crusader frame. Extended the bottom rails 4" from the bend and added tranny and motor mounts(temporary until I can scratch good tubular ones) Now to decide how to do the top bars around the blower and just where I want them to come down on the frame. Thinking bringing them down right beside the bellhousing. Then about half way down split to the rear as well where the lower bars will v up. Still looking for better 1/12 scale rear wheels for it, maybe even something decent off of a old diecast would work good enough for what I want. I will be building this thing around the motor and the motor is what i want to spend my attention on!

Looking for a scale conversion chart
Smart-Resins replied to LDO's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
On LargeScaleModeler forum under links is a scale calculator, or you can also go to Jims Dollhouse Pages and download the link to the same thing.I love using this.It has many many many different scales and you just put in the referenced scale, then the scale you want to scale to.You can break it down to the 64ths if you want even, or even metric if thats what you are used to working with.Great thing!! -
Actually the white walls are decals created by a friend of mine on LargeScaleModeler forum, Rick or Rgondeck better known as.I think it was like $11 or $14 for a full sheat of decals.I got a slew of gauges, some flames a bunch of plates, a couple sets of white walls and some lettering all on one sheet. It was a great deal.I have another set of white walls to use on one of my upcoming builds.Cant wait to use them!!

Hello guys built this little trike in less then 2 days(about 8-9 hours) for a local show today.Best part is I placed best of class- Adult motorcycle!! It is painted dupli-color deep emerald green with gold rims and the rest is painted gold then speckled different shades of the emerald grean.Used some decals from the Gambler kit and the Aces wild kit.By the way BarRy, thanks for the rear wheels. They work great for this!!Very little mods.Clipped the center post on the tripple tree for a quick snap on front forks.Cut off the rear tire pegs then drilled straight through and took a 1/25 scale trailer and added a new bottom and took a 1/2" out of the center for a nice skinny sleek look.Wired it all except the oil can (could not find good enough reference in time this morning)

Just a quick note guys.My daughter entered this beauty in a local contest today and placed best of class (Junior motorcycle)!! Thats my girl!! Now she wants to know what she can build next!! God I love her!!

Making seats look like leather...
Smart-Resins replied to Hillbilly Deluxe's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
A good friend on another forum suggested a krylon based paint, wich is leather.comes in black and brown.Comes out a dull soft color. Not a tremendous amount of texture, but nice and convincing on motorcycle seats.I just picked up two cans at a local Wally today clearanced for $2 a can.If you want a worn leather look perhaps do a bad crackled paint job first, then seal that then apply the krylon leather.I have not tried that yet.I have 4 more bike/trike builds in the works before I move onto a rat trap bike. Then I can try that trick. -
Man did she have a bick head!! By the way saw a funny the other day.A guy had one of those piss on signs and a big X on the spot.LOL.Thats fits me and my ex-trollip!

Looks good but you may want to take it to the body shop to fix that dent in the door.

Look for a Barbie beach set.Barbie in 1/8 would be about 6 foot. Now maybe just a hair off, but I know a dead ringer for her that was a Russian and about 6'3" so......... In thier beach sets they have had lawn chairs. The low style for modern and the regular for the older Barbies.

I have a last mock up after a couple of modifications to post later.Hopefully next week it shall find the paint booth!
