wip- Chevy Titan 90
Jim B replied to JTRACING's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Looks very realistic. Very nice. -
No problem. Glad to help. Post a couple pics of your truck. Maybe the guys here could help figure out what it is. I forgot to mention that Caterpillar also made the 3208 & 3208T. The 3208 be found in the AMT Ford LN8000 & LNT8000 kits. In the Ford it should be blue (for the year of the model 1973), any other truck it would ne New Caterpillar Yellow. I don't think they were put in the Peterbilt 359. Engine would be too small. A cavet to my previous post: I know I said that the 8V92T would be silver, the V/VT903 would be gray, and the 3408 would be New Caterpillar Yellow; however, if these engines were going into a pre-1986 Peterbilt they would probably be white. Same with the 8V71 & 8V71T.

The answer is: it depends. If this engine is going into a pre-1986 Peterbilt or pre-1947 Kenworth it would be white. In any other truck, the Detroit Diesel 8V71/8V71T & 8V92N would be Detroit Diesel Alpine Green (available at NAPA). The 8V92T would be Silver. As far as V8 for trucks, Cummins made the V903 & VT903 (dark gray), and Caterpiller made the 3408 (New Caterpillar Yellow). The 3408 is available in the Revell of Germany Kenworth W900 & Kenworth Australia. The Cummins V903 is available from Sourkraut (I have one, it's a nice casting): http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=...;product_id=229 Mack also made a V8: the E-9. This would ONLY be available in Mack trucks, and would be gray. I'm sure there are more V8, but these are the ones I know about. Hope this helps.

New Guy Questions
Jim B replied to binderguy's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Brad is "out of business", but his line was picked up by Budd Ricker of River Edge Designs. Budd has some of Monkeyclaw's stuff, too. http://riversedgeresins.com/home -
Wanted to give you guys a quick update on the AFL. Managed to get some red paint & decals on the cab, and completed the interior. Still need to clear coat the cab, then add about 2 pounds of chrome. Some of the chrome will be dulled to give it a "brushed steel" look (I hope). Once the cab is complete, I'll attack the body & the hose bed. The plan is to have some hose in the bed as well. Well, here are the pics: Hoping to get some more work done this weekend. We'll see!

Looking for 1938 or so Diamond T
Jim B replied to Karmodeler2's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Most of the Diamond T stuff I've seen from that era have been 1/35 resin military kits. They look really nice, but they are VERY expensive. Like these from Real Model: http://www.realmodel.cz/zen/index.php?main...0592549f5930b52 http://www.realmodel.cz/zen/index.php?main...0592549f5930b52 http://www.realmodel.cz/zen/index.php?main...0592549f5930b52 http://www.realmodel.cz/zen/index.php?main...0592549f5930b52 -
gas turbine GMC Astro FINISHED
Jim B replied to bitner's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Part of the problem with a gas turbine, is the horrendous fuel mileage. Turbines are notoriously thirsty engines, no matter what their size. Also, no matter what speed the truck is runnng at (from ideling to 75mph), the turbine is sucking the same amount of fuel because in order for it to operate properly the turbine has to run at high rpm. The weight savings of the turbine vs. the diesel won't make up for the fuel costs. Even in the long run. Take a look at the M1A1 tank currently fielded by the U.S. Army. It has a turbine in it, and it has power to spare; but it gets about 6 gallons per mile. Yes, gallons per mile, not miles per gallon. -
Chev Blitz Army Truck
Jim B replied to Dingo's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Dingo, I hear you about the difficulty of cardstock models. I tried the Mayflower once, and it was a disaster. Didn't I see this & the Freightliner on another forum? They look familiar. -
Well, I finally managed to get some paint on the frame & engine of my of my latest project: an AMT 1970 American-LaFrance Series 1000 pumper. I've got a long way to go, but hopefully the weather will cooperate over the next few days so I can get some red on the cab. The frame is Dupli-Color Semi-Gloss Black; the Detroit Diesel 8V71 is Detriot Diesel Alpine Green; and the wheels are Dupli-Color Victory Red with silver lug nuts, rims & hubs. It might not be totally correct, but I like it. Enjoy! Mock-Up Roadside Curbside

Really big trucks
Jim B replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The Komatsu 830E-AC is rated for about 240-255 tons, and weighs in itself at 140-160tons. The International Payhauler 350 is rated between 25-50 tons. Here are my references: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komatsu_830E http://www.machinerytrader.com/listings/li...u=INTERNATIONAL http://www.vannattabros.com/truck5.html -
Mack RL700 pics?
Jim B replied to mackattack's topic in 1:1 Reference Photos: Auto Shows, Personal vehicles (Cars and Trucks)
You, my friend, need to go here: http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...brochures/mack/ And I give anybody credit who can figure out Mack's model numbers. So you know, the AMT R685ST kit builds out of the box as a 1975-1979, while the DM600 is 1970-1973. If you want an earlier R-Series swap interiors. Good luck. -
Couldn't hurt. Thanks for the offer.

It's a start. Thanks for the information.

I have a Ford C-800 truck that will be getting a FT 390 c.i.d. HD V8 put between the rails. Does anyone knowwhere I can find detailing information for that engine? I'm looking to wire-out the block, fuel lines, etc. Thanks.

You're welcome. I don;t know about the 351 & 281 being the same. We'd better wait for Tim A. to weigh in on this. -

I'm no Peterbuilt guru, nor do I claim to be an expert and conversions & weathering; but this article might help: http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca..._09-10_sep-okt/ If I remember a thread about this truck earlier, the Duel truck was actually a 251. The front tandem wasn't powered. -
Ford C-600 Willig Freightlines
Jim B replied to Twist67's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Chris, You really do amazing work. Your attention to detail is incredible. I don't know what "year" your C-600 is going to be, but here are some brochure photos I found earlier while researching ideas for my C-900. This is from the 1973 brochure: http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...72/page_04.html And these are from the 1977 bruchure: http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...rd-c-77-04.html http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...rd-c-77-05.html Here's a decent shot of the Ford V-8 Super Duty engine (like in the kit) http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...2/page_06a.html By the way, what I discovered is that the 534 c.i.d. SD V-8 was only available on the C-900. The C-600 had a 300 c.i.d. HD Six, a 330 c.i.d. HD V-8, or a 361 c.i.d. HD V-8. http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...72/page_06.html http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...72/page_07.html -
