The Ollies in Johnstown, NY had lots of the Nova wagon. The 64 Ford. The 60 Coke Ranchero. The Coke 1941 Plymouth. The 60 Thunderbird. There was another one in 1/43 scale. Model T? The Grand Slam. The delivery Model T? The Corvette. Passed on that. Molded in orange. One Mustang from the previous group. And a bunch of gassers. Copperhead dragsters. No Surf Vans. They are on the left hand side of the store as you walk up the middle isle.

What gasser kit would that be?

I went to the Merritt Island, FL store this morning, they had The '70 Corvette, Groove Boss, Coke '60 Ranchero and the Meyers Manx. They also had the 1/32 '60 Thunderbird and some Revell kits left over from the last bunch of kits. I have the old issue of the '70 Corvette that is blue on the box, but it is missing the engine, so I grabbed one of the new ones to have a complete stock kit.

Stopped in again tonight because I was in the neighborhood. Same stuff as before, but they also had the '64 Galaxie and the Surf Shark ambulance. You have to look around in the aisle because they are not all together. I grabbed a Surf Shark, which is the one I was after all along and broke down and grabbed a Grove Boss just for parts.

  4. That is so cool and very well done! When I was a kid, my mom had a beauty shop which was located in the bottom of our house. One of the old ladies who came to get her hair done had a frost green Nova in this style. Her's had a black vinyl top and was maybe a 307 at best, but I always thought it would make a great sleeper. There was another customer that had a '70- '72 style Nova 4 door in black with either a 3 or 4 speed floor shift from the factory. I can't remember if it was a 6 or a small V8, but it was definitely weird and cool at the same time.

  5. Keep in mind, this kit is VERY old, the original dating to 1963 (IIRC), and has been produced nearly perpetually since then in the form of the Badman and Street Machine kits. The original is actually pretty nice, especially if you build it as the convertible. The Badman and SM kits appear to have chopped tops and the rear roof pillars are too wide, they are "cartoony" and were made for kids. In fact, nearly everyone I know in the model car world has built at least one in their modeling lifetime. That is why the Badman is beloved and people actually build real cars to emulate the kit! My advice is to just take this kit for what it is, if you want an accurate '55 hardtop, get a newer issue Revell kit (not the crappy one with opening doors!) they are super nice. That said, there are some easy things to do to improve the finished look of this kit: Open the rear wheel wells so they are higher. Use taller tires all around with appropriate mags. Make sure the rear tires fill the wheel wells and lastly, thin out the rear posts on the top. Thats what I am going to do with mine, anyway.

Also, circling this back to Johan's truck as opposed to my routinely ground axe, I honestly do hope that this is the final "rattle of the bones" for Johan.

I agree. Honestly, I don't understand the hubbub around Johan kits. And, is it going to matter at all if this Powell truck ever sees the light of day? Over the years I have had MANY Johan kits, from original issue 60's cars to the 80's era reissues. IF you want certain cars, I get it, they are the only game in town. Also, they tend to have accurate body proportions. There were some pretty detailed and nice kits, such as the funny car kits and the Chrysler Turbine Car, but the majority of what they made had lackluster chassis, interior and engine detail. Not to mention the later stuff was molded in weird, hard to paint colors and some had excessive flash. They also often had parts that were incorrect for the car, such as Plymouth interiors in Dodge cars, etc. Ultimately, I think people wax nostalgic and they bring the money on Ebay because they are perseved as finite, and that drives the price, I really doubt if they were readily available that we would be having this perpetual discussion.

  7. Sorry to hear about your trouble, the model was coming along so well!☹️ I feel your pain, I Almost quit building about 2 years ago over an Amt '62 Catalina, I had everything detailed and painted very nicely, and boogered it up badly in final assembly...not sure if I had a bad kit fit wise, or I did something wrong, but it made me walk away for a bit.  Just give yourself some time, that is the smartest move.👍

  8. This is really cool! I have seen these kits over years and wrote them off as unassembled toys. It is great that you saw more! It looks like one of the Chrysler show cars or an Italian American hybrid of that time period.
