Assistive technology in model building
Harry P. replied to Art Anderson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hmmm... I guess some people think they have all the answers, huh? But hey, thanks for posting your opinion. I always like to see members of the "other" forum dropping by every once in a while to let us know what they're thinking. -
Gotta agree with the crowd... that's just about as good as it gets. Very nice work!

What a coincidence! Tomorrow is George's sister's birthday, and also my Uncle Sam's birthday!

You're going to get a lot of different answers, because your question is pretty open. As far as paint, for a beginner the easiest way to go is to use a spray can to paint the body. Go to a hobby shop and pick up a can of Testors or Tamiya spray paint. You'll see them all displayed on racks... just pick a color you like. You might also want to get a matching can of primer, and if you want to get fancy, a matching can of clear gloss for your final coat (on top of the color coats). You can also use spray paint to spray the larger parts of the model, like the chassis, interior bucket, seats, etc. Personally I use a brush for painting most of the smaller parts. I'd stay away from Testors Enamel, and go with lacquer ar acrylics. They tend to go on smoother and dry faster than enamels, so they're a little easier for a beginner to get good results with. Follow the instructions on the can and you should be fine. Another paint alternative is to use "real car" paint, like DupliColor, available at any auto parts store or online. Just make sure you use a compatible primer. And don't mix and match brands and/or types of primer, color and clear, stay within the same brand and type of paint for all three... at least in the beginning, because sometimes mixing and matching paints can lead to disaster if you don't know what you're doing. And finally, but very important: DO NOT expect perfect results right away. You may get a spectacular finish on your first try, but the odds are you won't. That's because painting is probably the single most difficult part of building a model, and to do it well requires a little trial and error and a lot of practice. Don't get discouraged if your results aren''t perfect... the more times you do it, the better you'll get. And besides, you can always improve any paint finish by polishing it, either with automotive polishing products or a polishing kit made for models (available at most hobby shops or online). Just ask about anything you need to know... there are a lot of talented and knowledgeable builders who hang out here, and they'll be more than happy to answer your questions.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the $500 "membership fee", payable to me and mailed directly to my house...

Mike, I've been waiting forever for you to start posting here on a regular basis! You would fit right into the asylum! We don't close or lock topics here... everyone is free to say whatever is on their mind. As long as you keep it clean, it's all good! As you know, a lot of the writers over there have made the jump to our side... and a lot of readers/members have done the same. There must be a reason...

Happy Canada day
Harry P. replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think a lot of us down here in the US are a little jealous of you guys... you have basically all the same benefits we have here in the US as far as freedom, prosperity, standard of living, education, etc., but none of the hassles, like trying to be the world's policeman. Canada is what the US would be if only we didn't have that "Superpower" label attached to us... and the expectations that go with it. My theory: the less your country is in the news, the better a place is probably is to live. -

You might just be a Canadian if: You design your Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. You have more miles on your snowblower than your car. You have 10 favorite recipes for moose meat. You've taken your kids trick-or-treating in a blizzard. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled in with snow. You owe more money on your snowmobile than your car. The most effective mosquito repellent is a shotgun. Your get stuck while snowblowing... on the roof! You find -40C a "little chilly." The trunk of your car doubles as a deep freezer. You know the four seasons: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter and Construction. No offense, guys! Happy C.D.! BTW: I once visited Toronto for about a week, and I liked the city so much I seriously considered moving there. No joke! Absolutely one of the coolest cities I've ever been to! -

Is Canada Day the Canadian Independence Day? Like our 4th of July? If so, you can't see this, but I'm toasting you Canucks by having some back bacon and a Molson right now... -

Help with making this trim piece
Harry P. replied to loudcherokee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used tiny drops of CA. Actually what I did was form the wire, test fit and positioned it into place, then added just the tiniest amount of CA by putting a drop onto the tip of my X-acto blade and touching the tip of the blade to the wire. Capillary action drew the liquid CA along the length of the wire. -
Michael Jackson dead at 50

If they need to wear masks at all times, keeping their identity secret so they can lead a "normal" life... well, isn't that mighty ABNORMAL???!!! As I recall, I didn't have to keep my identity a secret when I went out to play with my friends as a kid. Those kids are doomed to a very weird life... -

Well, if I heard what I think I heard, then 2 of the 3 kids have no biological ties to the Jackson family at all, and the Jacksons have no claim to them. This is going to get messy as more facts come out... -

Ha!! I'm from Illinois and we have nuttier people than Wisconsin. Look at our Governor! (ex-guv, that is). Going on trial soon, and to jail soon after that, where he'll join our other ex-governor who's already doing time in the pen! Abe Lincoln is spinning in his grave so fast that they have to keep a water hose spraying on it at all times to keep old Honest Abe from bursting into flames! -

I think the saddest part of this whole circus is the fact that there are 3 little kids involved who will probably grow up into severely troubled adults. Just look at their upbringing so far... no mom (none that they knew of, at least), "dad" is Michael Jackson, whose lifestyle can probably be generously described as "eccentric" at best and criminal at worst. The kids were most likely raised by nannies, never have had a "nornal" childhood, have never gone off and played with other kids, never rode their bikes to the park, never played a game of sandlot baseball, never went to school with other kids... their whole existence up to this point has been entirely artificial and unnatural. Geez, whenever they were out in public MJ made them wear masks, fercrissakes! What are the odds that they could possibly grow up to be normal, well-adjusted adults? Slim to none, I'd say. -
How do I mod this car ??
Harry P. replied to dwc43's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You have no idea how much work is involved in turning a 2-door into a 4-door. It's not only filling in the existing door lines and scribing new ones, but like Bill mentioned, the bodywork is often very different between a coupe and the sedan version... and that's not even considering that you'd have to scratch build an entirely new interior, with different door panels front and rear, relocated armrests, window cranks and door handles for the rear doors, etc. A big scratchbuilding job... not impossible, but definitely not a quick, simple job. If a 4-door body is already available, buy it! -

Fred Travalena now, too??!!! Geez, is God conducting some sort of celebrity close-out??? BTW... I had the radio on today as I was working, so I may have misheard this... but I swear I heard that it's now been proven that 2 of the 3 kids MJ thought were his were actually fathered by his mysterious "doctor" friend and given birth by MJ's onetime, ahem, "wife," Debbie Rowe. Who may now sue for custody of the kids. This thing is getting messier by the day... -
Not to be rude, but I really can't see why anyone would shell out $5-10 bucks a pop for a can of air, when you can buy a compressor for $50-60 and have unlimited air forever. Pay once, that's it. I know the post said "until I can afford a compressor"... but can you really NOT afford one? At $50 or so? Maybe if you very rarely use an airbrush, the canned air might make sense, money-wise... but even then, after the cost of only 4-5 cans you could have bought a compressor.

I finally did it!

Invite them all over here! There are plenty of people already here who got fed up with SA's site and/or forum for one reason or another (like me!). And besides... since all the SA writers (or a lot of them, at least) have already made the move to MCM, it would make sense for the forum members over there to make the move, too.
