Giants! Superbowl Champions!
Harry P. replied to 58 Impala's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No argument from me there. Buckingham is incredibly talented. I'd like to see him and Mike Campbell go head-to-head in a guitar hero steel cage death match! -

When the Cubs win???? I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. After all, last year they got swept out of the playoffs in the first round by the "mighty" D-Backs... And besides...I'm a Sox fan. I'm looking for them to bounce back this season. (I hope...) -

Yeah, that WOULD have been nice. TP was just recently on Soundstage on PBS, and Stevie did 4-5 songs with them. Sounded (and looked) great! Maybe she should rethink the Fleetwod Mac thing...after all, she's already a heartbreaker!!! -
Tools You Can't Live Without
Harry P. replied to Kenny's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This set of spring clamps cost me $3. They come in INCREDIBLY handy. I got along without them before, but they make life much easier! Nothing like having a bunch of extra "hands" sometimes... -
Just Wondering About The Confederate Flag...
Harry P. replied to JAFFA's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, technically you're right of course...once a symbol is created, it exists...it can't be created again. But the meaning of that symbol can change over time. Take the swastika. It was created over 3,000 years ago! Over that time it has been adopted by many diverse groups and symbolized many different things. We all know who made it famous (or infamous). But what it symbolizes today has nothing to do with what it symbolized long ago. Same with the Confederate flag. -

I must've missed that, but it doesn't change my opinion of the guy. As far as Tom Petty...one of my all time faves, but DUDE! Seriously, man, it's the SUPER BOWL! A little more energy, pleeez!!! He sounded like he was on cruise control the whole time. I've seen bassett hounds with more fire... -

I love it when the underdog wins! And I can't stand that SOB Belicheck. He didn't even shake Coughlin's hand after the game...he walked off with 1 second left on the clock and just walked away from his team. What a no-class guy... -
Ok, gang. What is it??? The answer: REAL!

You might want to try an aluminum baking pan or pie pan...you know, those disposable pans you cook a turkey in, or the type of container coffee cakes come in. The aluminum is thin enough to cut, file and bend very easily, yet stiff and thick enough to hold it's shape. It's the perfect material for making things like the rear spring shackle plates on your "55. It might be easier to work with than the aluminum from a cat food can, which I assume is thicker and harder to cut.

Holy ######!!! It would have been easier to build your own space ship than to correct the body on this thing!

The wheels in your first photo are WAY too big...cartoonish looking. VERY uncomfortably close to "DONK" status...and you don't want to go there! I'd say the wheel size on the 58 Pontiac are perfect. BTW...seeing the Chevy and Pontiac side by side like that you can really see how they're the same exact car, just "decorated" differently. GM really had the "badge engineering" concept down to a science back then!

Just Wondering About The Confederate Flag...
Harry P. replied to JAFFA's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You couldn't be more wrong! Today the Confederate flag is has become a symbol of racism because it's been adopted by racist groups over the years as "their" flag. It didn't start out that way, obviously-it was a Civil War battle flag-but because it's now used as a symbol by various racist groups, it has lost its original context and become a symbol of something other than it once was. That's not to say that EVERYONE who has a Confederate flag on their pickup truck is racist, but as Ken wisely said, if you AREN'T a racist, and you DON'T want to look like one, then WHY fly a flag that symbolizes that very thing??? Same thing with the Nazi swastika. You could be a "flag collector"...but if you have the Nazi flag displayed in your living room as part of your collection, when people see it the first thing they will associate you with is definitely NOT flag collecting. See my point?? -
"best Resin Is Not Best, But Worst!

I know this is off-topic... but Fury, your photobucket link doesn't work. -
Id rather be in Hawaii ANY time of year!

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I actually DO have a little display space available now. Two of my three kids are away at college, and the third one is already out on her own...so my once crowded 4-bedroom house now has a couple of unused bedrooms. Lots of potential display area! Empty nest syndrome...Woo Hoo!!!!

Yeah, it's a big one...about two feet long. It'll take up a lot of shelf space when it's done!

A little more progress. Slowly but surely... I didn't like the kit wheels, so I used a leftover set from the Big Deuce kit. Rear tires are also from the Big Deuce. I also replaced the kit's tie rod and steering linkage pieces with aluminum rod. No more mold seams! I cut the ends off the kit pieces and glued them into pieces of aluminum rod that I cut to length.
-
The kit has the option of single or double engines, but only has one dashboard, with holes for gauges for both engines. Since I'm doing the single engine version, I made a new dash panel out of sheet styrene, using the kit piece as a template. I figured it was easier to make a new one from scratch rather than try to fill the unused gauge holes in the kit piece. The switches are scratchbuilt, too. On the kit piece they're molded onto the dash, but since I used a scratchbuilt dash I had to recreate the switches.
-
Looks great! Nice detail work on that engine. This is based on the Lindberg "Exterminator", right? Small world...I'm working on the very same kit myself (I posted some photos in "On the Workbench" a week or two ago).

All you have to do is copy the url of the photo from your Fotki album and paste it here into your post...but MAKE SURE the photo's url has image tags at the begining and end...like this: [ img]photourlxxxxxxxx[/img ] (I added spaces in my "fake" image tags here, otherwise these tags would not appear in my post, but make sure that when you post your photos there are NO SPACES between the tags and the photo's url and NO SPACES within the image tags themselves.) Without those image tags the photo will not appear.

Thanks! Keep an eye out...there's more to come... BTW...don't worry about drawing. You have enough hobbies to keep you busy already!

Your question is hard to answer. A 100% accurate part would also look good! Accuracy and good looks are not mutually exclusive! However, there are some things that just can't be done accurately while keeping it in scale. Some smaller details of a 1:1 car would literally almost disappear in 1/25 scale. Trying too hard to recreate every last nut, bolt, clamp and wire is where many modelers make a big mistake. They go through an incredible amount of work "superdetailing" the model, but some of the details are just not in scale...and in the end, because the added detail is usually too big and clunky (out of scale), the model winds up looking less real rather than more real! The most "realistic" models I've seen have quite a few details that are present on the real car missingon the scale version. Knowing when to quit when it comes to detailing is an art...it's hard to get it just right between not enough detail and going overboard.
