What did you see on the road today?
Harry P. replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't remember ever seeing one. That's not to say they aren't out and about here... just that I've never seen one before. It's a different enough looking car that I would have remembered if I ever saw one before. I don't know... I guess the types of cars people buy is pretty different out west than it is here. -

Metro area of 8,000,000+.... and that's the first one I've seen on the street. Go figure... -
When you have "Jay Leno money," it's not a problem! What I would like to know is... what's the whole collection worth? That must be quite a number!

Oh yes there is. And it's coming... Electric... hydrogen... natural gas...the sun... who knows what will be powering our cars 10-20 years from now? I think the gas-powered vehicles' market share will continue to shrink as technology evolves and other alternatives become more affordable and available. It's inevitable that gas-powered vehicles will one day disappear.

There is a story in the local paper's auto section today about Jay and his collection. He has 130 cars (and 93 motorcycles). Each car is always kept on a charger (unless it's a crank start), each car is always ready to start up and drive any time Jay feels like taking one out for a spin. He has four full-time mechanics on his staff that keep everything in good shape. http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/chi-jay-leno-opens-doors-to-eclectic-130car-garage-20140714,0,6176711.story

Was the chassis already tubbed to fit the rear wheels or did you do it yourself? If you did it, tell us how.

Same here... Anything beyond that is gravy...

Nice work on the engine.

Just one small tip: a lot of the photos show the model at the same exact angle, only a different background. No need to post so many photos that look almost exactly alike.

A google image search is a model builder's best friend.

That's about as good as it gets! Beautiful, very nice color combination, and great photos, too! The only thing you didn't show us is the engine...

I saw an Audi R8 in town this morning, first one ever. It was stopped at the light in the next lane over. I had to google it, I didn't know what it was... all I recognized was the Audi logo on the back. It was white, just like this one... -
Speed traps! They're everywhere. A perfect example, right near my house... a very well-traveled E-W street, 3 lanes eastbound, 3 west... one of the main commercial drags in the NW suburbs (Woodfield Mall is located just off it)... The speed limit is 45, except for about a two-block stretch where it suddenly drops to 35 for no reason... then back to 45 again. No reason for the speed limit drop... nothing changes, same number of lanes, but for that mysterious two block stretch the limit is 35. The only reason I can think of is to trap drivers doing 45.

Something in there has to be unconstitutional. Unreasonable search and seizure... right to privacy... something. We're a long way from that happening... first would come years and years of court battles. I know that the insurance companies have data recorders that track your driving, but at this point at least, you have to allow them to put one in your car.

Speeding is also illegal, but you see people doing that every day, too. It's impossible for the cops to be everywhere at every time and catch everyone who's breaking a law. Which is a lesson I learned many years ago when I was stopped for speeding one day. I told the cop that yes, technically I was speeding... but I wasn't going any faster than the rest of traffic... so why did he stop me? His answer: Yes, everyone was speeding, but I can only stop one person at a time.

Another thing I see happening here way too often: Decals (like flames or stripes, for example) that cross body panel lines all in one piece. How do you suppose the door on the 1:1 car could open if the vinyl graphics ran across the panel line all in one piece??? They don't, of course... and they shouldn't on your model, either.

Another basic step that most people don't do: adding a black wash, especially on grilles and wheels. Nothing looks more toylike than Chevy or Mopar Rally wheels that are all shiny chrome plated. The real wheels are a combination of matte silver and polished metal... and they haves holes in them, something a black wash will work wonders on. A black wash also makes the model's engine look much more realistic and less toylike.

Another thing many builders overlook: Even if you're not going to detail your model, even if you build straight out of the box, you should always remove any ejector pin marks that will show on the finished model. If they are under the seats, or on the interior floor where they will be covered by the seats, no problem. But make sure you don't forget taking care of the ones that will show.
