  1. Well, the engine is coming along. Here's how it is so far...
  2. Thanks for that link, Rob - certainly is helpful!
  3. And the chassis is done for now. I had to finish building the front part of the rollcage around the engine and was test fitting and trimming the fuel cell so I can put that on and still have the back end covered by sheet "metal". I also painted the whole bottom so I could get an idea of how "flat" this was and if it needed further work. Besides, it just looks prettier than all that blue and white and grey.... I was going to paint the sheet metal in a steel color, unless someone knows what color it should be. I know the pics are in black and white, but it seems that it is not the same Petty blue that the body is - hence why I think I'll be painting it silver.
  4. Thanks, Gordon - I've been watching that site thinking that someone must have made one at some point - I'll keep my eyes open.
  5. Thanks for the offer, Bart, but like you said, I have plenty of reference pics here now. Still a bit of scratchbuilding to do, but it's starting to come together slowly.
  6. Here's where we are with the chassis now. Based on the photo above, I have removed the gas tank so the fuel cell will fit flat and I can cover the back part of the fuel cell appropriately - yes, it will still be there, but covered up a bit. I have also started work on the engine itself
  7. Well, I've been trying to do these builds with a degree of accuracy, but within my limited one-income/six kids budget - although I would like to strive for accuracy, there are some areas that I will simply have to concede and make concessions - the intake manifold is one of those. But on the bright side, here's a pic that shows the back of the chassis pretty darn well - looks like at least most of the fuel cell was covered as well: So I have decided to cut the fuel cell I had built out of this build and just cover it up!
  8. Thanks for the pics, Robert. Tommy and Jacen, thank you for the info on those kits. I have searched my extra kits, but don't have one of those old MPC kits. So, I may be stuck with my homemade version - not as pretty, but it will still work.
  9. Well, I checked all my kits and a few other people opened up some nice sealed Jo-Han kits looking for me, but it seems nobody makes that intake manifold. So I am still working on making one. It doesn't have to be perfect since it will mostly be covered by the air cleaner. Still, I have to try to make it resemble the part it's supposed to be. I may have an update to that in the next day or so.
  10. The GTX trim has been removed and the car body has been primered. It's coming along and is almost ready for paint:
  11. Here is the current status of the chassis: I will be using putty to blend to pieces covering the main part of the underside so it will appear as one piece. Also, the cut out for the fuel cell is done so it will fit right in.
  12. Well, that is very helpful - thank you - now I know what to work on tonight!
  13. Oh, that would be cool - thank you!
  14. Well, I started covering the chassis pan. I have left the driveshaft tunnel uncovered. If anyone knows if this should be covered, too, please let me know. Also, the slits cut into the hood have been filled, so I will (hopefully) start sanding the hood down tomorrow. I was going to primer the body today, but weather is against me, so maybe tomorrow.
  15. Not much of an update, but I wanted to let you all know that I was still busy on the Petty car. I started working on the fuel cell that will replace the kit's molded in gas tank - it's still kind rough, but at least you can get an idea for what I am going for here: Also, I am going to have to address the hood. It has "cut outs" on the bottom so you can easily cut a hole in the hood - only problem is that this causes it to be visible (and you can feel it) on the top of the hood - I'm going to have to fill that then sand down the top of the hood to make it smooth between the two "bumps": Finally, here is a very rough mock up of the intake manifold that I am working on - I know it is really rough, but with a little luck I can make this look much better. Beyond that, I've just been priming, sanding, priming, sanding, etc.
  16. Thanks, Jason! I appreciate the comment and the picture. I knew the number on top was off-center, but this shows it perfectly.
  17. well, that is helpful! That explains about everything a bit more clearly. Okay, I'll see what I can do about that. Thanks, Jacen
  18. I'm not sure on that one, Bart - if so, then I could just make a casting of it and that would solve it. I'll see what I can find out. Thanks for the heads up on that.
  19. well, no pics yet, but I can tell ya what I have been doing. You see, there's this neat pic of Maurice with the engine from '68... There's a couple of interesting things about this pic. First, note the orange oil pan. But the thing that got me was the old "bathtub" intake manifold. I searched all my kits but cannot find this manifold. So, I have been trying to make one from scratch. On a somewhat related note, I've also been scratch-building a fuel cell as the molded on gas tank aint gonna cut it. Maybe I can get some pics up tomorrow when I actually have something to show for the work.
  20. Good idea, Rodney - the back side has an AMT Ertl stamp on it, but it may be less work to fill in the holes where the armrests were and sand down the raised text - thanks for the suggestion.
  21. When reviewing the car body, it was found that the B pillars were at the wrong angle - they should be parallel with the wing windows as can be seen in the above photo. This has now been corrected. Also, all of the GTX trim has now been sanded off from the body sides and the wheel wells. This is starting to look more like it should now. The rollcage is coming along. We're not done yet, but it is starting to take shape now. I can't be sure, but it seems that they still had the door panels on the inside of the car at this time. So I figured that I would use them. I sanded off the armrests from the interior doors. There's still some more work to be done on these doors to make them flat, but we're getting there. The only thing that should be on here are the window cranks (if I am wrong, please let me knpw).
  22. Someone pointed out to me that the body I have is for a '69 GTX and not a '68 Roadrunner. So I will be doing some more sanding to get rid of the GTX trim on the body. I'll post pics when I have an update on that.
  23. well, thank you for that info!! I swear, I am just gonna have to pick up a second or third kit now!!!
  24. Thanks for the comments, guys. I still have to sand down that trim around the bottom of the body, but the body is getting there. Jacen, wasn't the off-center "43" only on the white one? Did the others have it, too? I did get started on the rollcage. Not much done yet, but it does fit so that's a good thing. I got a slight twist in it that I'll need to get out tomorrow. That's it for tonight.
  25. Well, I sanded off the "GTX" logo that was molded onto the fender. Looks like the door handles are staying on this one. Not looking too bad so far... I started sanding the mold seams and then realized that this car had B pillars - the kit doesn't. Okay, no problem. Time for me to jump in and get something started - we need some B pillars. So I pulled out some plastic strip and start trimming until I get it just about right. Then I realize that there's just these little teeny nubs at the ends of the pillars for support - chances are knowing my luck, I would break them a dozen different times. They need better support. So I cut a couple more pieces slightly longer than the first ones: Yep, these are going to be used to support from the back - it'll give more contact area so less chance of breakage. I glued the "fitted" pieces to the slightly longer ones as so: Now, I was able to put these in without worrying about them nearly so much. Here's the results:
