Picked up another couple promos from the collectibles store. A 1980 Monte Carlo in light camel to build a replica of a car my family had when I was growing up: And a 1980 El Camino in cinnabar to bash with the later AMT 86 SS kit: I'm going to have to stay away from that store for a while...!

This is precisely the reason why I only mention eBay items after I've purchased them. I do wonder sometimes if my kit history articles generate interest in the subjects and drive prices higher for a while...

You can also order pre-wired distributors through Elm City Hobbies; he carries Parts by Parks stuff. He is in Fredericton, NB and ships everywhere. HTH

I recently picked up four promos that I'm looking to build up; they're all in really good shape no restoration needed, really. The two Chevy duallys are as Tom described with heat fused interiors but the two older MPC promos (1980 Monte Carlo and 1980 El Camino) seem to have glue holding things in?

At our show the entrants tend to hang around/near their builds so you get a chance to talk to them. This has, however, been a bit of a pain in the past when you're trying to judge the kit and they hover.

Contest Theory: A built models tour
Fabrux replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thank you, Nick! I know with absolute certainty that I never have a chance at winning a major award but I enter my kits anyway to display. Maybe someday I'll build something that will get gold but in the meantime if one of my kits inspires someone else to build, I've done good. -
I once asked a university buddy of mine why he left the hologram stickers on his hats (and left the peak flat) and he said it was to "preserve the masterpiece." Mind you this was at a party and we were both quite drunk, so take from that what you will.

Heard back from my LHS owner and he expects to sell it for $68.75-69.75 unless he can get a better deal from a supplier.

Contest Theory: A built models tour
Fabrux replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For my club's show we have had a few instances of builders entering the same kits year after year. We finally added a new rule to the entries for our 25th anniversary show last year that kits that have been entered before will not be judged. Our show is a little different than most in that every entrant gets a medal (bronze, silver, and gold) based on their judged score. So, a model that was judged as a bronze one year won't be a silver the next year with no changes. -

It isn't really that great of a kit by modern standards, but pretty good for its time. Metal axles, simplified chassis, etc. -
I honestly don't know what he will be selling them for, but he sells the Meng 1:35 Hilux kits for $44 CDN so this kit for close to $70 seems about right.

The White Lightning is the one I think you're talking about, yes? It only has a scooped hood. -
I know the cost is an issue and Asian hobby retailers may sell for cheaper but if the price is say $40 + $20 shipping and $70 at my LHS, I don't mind paying the extra $10.

77 GMC Rollback
Fabrux replied to shas's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Yeah, the latest reissue has been modified to use the old Monogram 1:24 Goodyear Tracker A/T tires (with removed sidewall detail) that are also in the GMC plow truck. The original Captain Hook and the later orange tow truck issues have two piece plastic tires. -

No hard feelings, Jeff. I just know duplicate topics are sometimes frowned upon. -
I have one of those snap kits, actually, and it has the 95-96 dash in it. The 97-98 dash has a passenger side airbag where the 95-96 dash has a shelf with cup holders. That being said, the dash is actually incorrect as the 3500 never had passenger airbags until the GMT800 body change; the dash was the same as the 1500 trucks but with a cubby in place of the airbag. I'll be thinking long and hard about using the 97 promo for parts as the cab and interior are what I need to make a replica of my 1:1 98 K1500 GMC.

I stopped by a local collectibles shop today. He mainly deals in books, coins, paper currency, comics, etc etc but occasionally he'll buy up a bunch of models from folks that are looking to unload collections. A couple years back he had 100+ airplane and armour kits in. I was checking up on his automotive brochures (which I collect) when I happened to notice in one of his display cases a few promos. I asked to look at a couple and we got to talking and turns out he just purchased a lot of 80 or so GM promos from the late 70s through to late 90s! He dug out the boxes as he had limited display space and I rifled through and picked out these two duallies. I had no idea that the 97-98 Chev pickup dash was ever offered in scale! There are a couple other promos I'd like to pick up when I have some extra money again. Didn't end up getting any brochures today...

I was searching my box hoping for a bowtie as I got a 69-70 Blazer grille in a parts lot a while back! Ah well, I'll improvise.

1980 GMC Jimmy
Fabrux replied to Fabrux's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
The Mad Mudder is a 76 Blazer. I have one, plus the original Pulldozer and plan to build one as a pull truck with a GMC grille. I have all the parts to make a stock Blazer out of the kits, too. That being said, the Monogram kits are all 1:24 scale. The Revell squarebody kits, crude as they are, are all 1:25 scale and fit in perfectly with the MPC kits. Although the Revell Chevy kits depict only the 77-78 and the GMC is a 79-80, the MPC kits go from 75-82 for Chevy and 81-84 for GMC. The Revell Blazer body is an excellent source for the correct roof to build a 76-up Blazer out of the various MPC kits, which I plan to do with the extra body I have. -

You know I was sitting in a parking lot today and noticed a late 2000s Buick that had a hollowed out grille emblem. I think all the latest Buicks have that, too. Try as they might I don't think anyone is associating a modern Buick with racing... -

The biggest problem in this situation is the images that the Acme maker produces. If you can find a higher resolutuon picture of the base blate you want to replicate and then add your text in GIMP or something like it (Paint.NET etc) you may have better results.

Looks good, other than that Revell labelled the box wrong; it is actually a 79-80. -

I'm going with a SBC, probably from one of the MPC squarebody kits.
