HotWheels has made 1/24 scale cars for some time. Even the Boss Hoss was made in other 1/24 versions before this one. CadillacPat

You bet Dr. Cranky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coast AirBrush is the most reputable Paint Supplier out there. Still, mixing our own paint gives us ultimate control over our projects. I belong to a few AirBrush sites and am Mod on The AirBrush Forum where we discuss HOK almost daily. The subject of premixed paint comes up and critiques and opinions vary widely. CadillacPat -

CadillacPat replied to usmc_moose's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When House Of Kolor is not supplying me with what I need for projects I buy from Coast AirBrush or directly from HOK in Picayune Mississippi. Coast AirBrush is the only company authorized by HOK to repour their paint into smaller quantities. Hence the 4 oz. bottles we have seen for the last 5 years. Premixed quantities are not made up by the folks at HOK, so they are premixed by someone else and several places online advertise these sales. CadillacPat -
Do you use a Hot Box to dry paint?
CadillacPat replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hedgehog I tried to post enough pictures to show how my Ovens look inside and out. If you can nail a box together and twist a few wires then you can build one of my Fact-O-Bake Ovens. Just begin with a base area measurement (floor or bottom) that will allow you to place your largest model inside the booth without possibly touching any of its freshly painted eges. I'd allow 4" on either end of the Model, (Model length plus 8") for the width and the depth of the floor piece. Figure on a heighth measurement of at least 16" to 21". I have a Tutorial showing how to build one of my CadillacPat Fact-O-Bake Ovens using a single 10" x 1" x 12" board but so many DieCast Customizing sites have bitten the dust that some of my Tutorials have to be reposted to keep them alive. Here's a couple more pics of my largest Oven, If you have more questions feel free to ask. CadillacPat -

Moose, There is only one instance where Aerosol Paint cans have been labled with the name House of Kolor. These paints (not really House Of Kolor Paints) were sold through WalMart a few years back by a company licensed to use the HOK name. They are not House Of Kolor automotive paints and only use HOK pigments for their chemical makeup. The Aerosols we are speaking of were designed especially for quick drying time and adhesion to plastic. I have seen them used for decent paintjobs but they are most certainly not HOK paints. At the same time these paints hit the stands I was being sponsored by HOK to produce a BuildOff using their products. Besides all the goodies HOK sent me to show, give away and discuss, they also sent these Aerosol Paints and the 1 oz. bottle sizes. The Execs at HOK expressed a lot of distaste for the licensing of these two products and the years since have proven their fears. Nearly everyone confused these Aerosol Paints as being real HOK paint and still today I see forum posts about them. Now, all that being said, yes you can use them over the Tamiya Primer you have. The paints, both Aerosol and Bottle Liquid, are enamels. Thereis a company named Black Gold in Arlington Texas that at one time repackaged (so they say) HOK under their own name of Black Gold. I tried their products years ago but found their bottled paints dried up quickly and their Aerosols gave iffy results from can to can. Today at swap meets you can see the Black Gold being clearanced for pennies on the dollar. CadillacPat -
The J in Jesse stands for Joke, Both of the Jesse James DieCast lines sunk quickly like the Titanic. Both Porn Star girlfriends dumped him, The Tattoo broad with cartoons all over her face dumped him, His movie star wife dumped him and went straight out and started adopting babies, He recently got on TV putting down the guys at OCC saying their bikes will not stand the test of time, but did he forget when his TV show showed him on the way to Sturgess his own bike began falling apart going down the highway. He's a punk who grew up thinking being a Punk is cool. I don't know anyone who ever heard of him before his TV show of building Mustangs that scoop up golf balls, VW's that sank over in the Atchafalaya Spillway, or any of the other nonsensical things he makes that nobody wants. If you are in Texas and want a Custom bike you don't go see Jesse James you go see the Martin Brothers CadillacPat

SJordan, Unvented is the key word here. Johnny, Also take a look at my Paint Booth and the baffles (front upper and lower) that are designed with it. These baffles force any overspray back into the center of the Booth where incoming air and outgoing air drag it through the fans and out. Build your Paint Booth with enough fan power and you're fine. If your fans are insufficient or your Booth is designed poorly then air pressure and paint coming from the AirBrush can overcome the efficiency of those fans. But, we don't AirBrush with very high pressures. Remember, you ae not spraying at 100psi nor is your finger taped down to the trigger in a constant on positiion. Very little paint flows through an AirBrush as you make each pass. CadillacPat

Harry, Those little "Hobby" type Spray Booths are built for a profit not performance. So it looks like all one can use with the Paasche Booth is water based paints. CadillacPat

"Get Your Kicks On Route 66" Just the words "Route 66" brings up visions of Automobiles and Americana at it's best. The open road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well you've seen the House Of Kolor Jada Oil Tanker, it went to the Execs at HOK. Recently I posted the AutoFest 2009 Jada Oil Tanker, it's going out to the AutoFest ACCWC Charity. Now for a dramatic change in colors. My Route 66 Jada Oil Tanker in HOK Candy Emerald Green, Candy Pagan Gold and Black. When the Jada Oil Tanker is disassembled and the roof apparatus is removed, a very prominent depression is left down the length of the roof. Designing this Tanker as a Custom Van instead of a work truck I chose to fill in this hole in the roof using JB Weld. A perpendicular line running across the roof is also filled in for a smooth overall appearance. Factory Headlamps are removed and their mounting holes are also filled with JB Weld. Holes are drilled in front fenders to insert my RhineStone Headlights. Tape is used inside the body behind the roof hole and the Headlight holes to keep the JB Weld from dripping through. I bake the casting in one of my Fact-O-Bake Ovens for a few hours and then begin the sanding . Sanding for something like this must be done with blocks. You want a smooth even surface when finished. I use 2" x 4" pieces of 1/4" thick Plexiglass and start with 220 grit. When I'm pleased with the sanding job and have finished it with some fine red putty it goes on to Priming. After Priming, Fenders are shot with LimeTime Pearl, Intercoat Cleared and then taped. Sides are shot Zenith Gold, Intercoat Cleared and taped. Hood and front of Cab roof is shot the same LimeTime Pearl, InterCoat Cleared and then taped. Shell is shot Black, InterCoat cleared and then taped. Tape is removed everywhere except the Shell, Windshield trim is applied in Chrome, and the body is shot Candy Pagan Gold with Aztec Gold Pearl Powder. Windshield Trim turns to Gold with the use of the Candy Pagan Gold. Shell tape is removed, Decals, Rhinestone Headlights and Taillights, and 1/64" Gold Trim Tape (separating Cab from Shell) are applied and the whole body is shot with House Of Kolor Urethane Clear with Brilliant Gold Pearl Powder. All Products Used Are Exclusively House Of Kolor, Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The original casting as it comes from the factory, Now my Route 66 version, Stay Tuned for my Route 66 Jada Divco Cruizer and Route66 Jada Silverado Dualley PickUp!!!!!!

Okay Rob, So your whole "story" is nothing based on your own paint experience, it is based on a story you heard of some guy who threw lit cigarettes into ductwork. Why are your fellow employees walking around throwing lit digarettes wherever they like????? If you deliberately set the Booth on fire then OF COURSE it will burn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to tell you, having a hissy fit and threatening to quit (then coming back to rail even more) does not add any credibility to your tale of total destruction. When you came back with your name calling that told me all I need to know about your true experience with this subject. Take a break, relax, light up another cigarette. CadillacPat

Absolutely amazing, Art, you are telling people there is no reason to wear a Respirator and, Rob, You are giving reports on how you blew up two 18 wheelers in your paint booth. Did yall forget we are talking about AirBrushing Models???????????????????? I can't read any more of this. I am glad to see some of you guys taking the bull by the horns and designing and building your own Paint Booths, Beyond that the scare tactics I see being posted are ridiculous and unfounded . I thought there would be a huge interest here in AirBrushing because on many of the AirBrush sites I go to there is an interest in building Models. This discussion is not on Paint Booths big enough to drive two 18 wheelers into nor are we discussing the type of equipment needed to paint them. I've posted the information I have from experience, take it or leave it, your choice. Please, no more scare tactics or off subject rants. NEW IDEA ON A MODEL DRYING BOX
CadillacPat replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
The little miniature figurines, are probably fine for this tupperware setup as would be lead soldiers or game pieces. Minute amounts of dust being forced through the box would not be a big deal for this stuff. If it works for you that's all you need to care about. I can't see it being of any use for much else besides small parts. My observations, Screw the box down to a tabletop and secure it. As lightweight as it is a slight nudge would rock around anything inside. Do something with all that wiring laying around. The setup takes up too much room with all that loose wiring. Maybe the wiring was left out in the open to show how everything hooked up. For these little miniature figurines I would still go with my idea of a 3lb. coffee can or 1 gallon bucket with both ends cut out and a cheap $5-$10 gooseneck lamp placed above the open top. You need some heat to cure things. A lot less hardware to set up and knock down. One other thing I noticed in the top video, Wonder if anyone else caught this. Marco's voice was clear and normal sounding in the first part of the top video but once he was off camera the voice sounded like Stephen Hawking. CadillacPat -
Alclad over urethane clear?
CadillacPat replied to Sixx's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Sure you can spray the Alclad over Urethane Clear. After all the key to a good Alclad chrome job is a super smooth surface, but Gloss Black should be your underlying color. Alclad over Red will probably give you a pinkish hue to the chrome. Whenever spraying anything over a cured Clear you are supposed to slightly scuff up the surface to give the paint bite. But, For a nice smooth chrome you won't be able to do any scuffing or light sanding. Are you able to scuff the Urethane Clear and then shoot it Gloss Black?? CadillacPat -
Thanks Harry, but the people who will WILL, and the people who won't WON"T Just a quick note before crashing for a few hours, I'll come back later but I don't force my knowhow, I just put it out there for those who will use it. I see a tad of negative speculation from a couple of guys but no substance of experience. This is why I post pics, and tell how I make things, because, I ACTUALLY DO I would like to see pictures (as I post) from these same people. 3 of my 80 cfm fans are are pushing 240 cfm at the base and back of the Booth, strong enough to leave piles of powdered paint on the outside patio. AirBrushing sometimes 6hrs in an evening (taking breaks for the Compressor) and usually a couple of hrs every night for 13 yrs and I've yet to ignite the upper atmosphere. I don't think some of the speculators are aware of the small Air/Petroleum product ratio emerging from the gun, Nor have they taken into account that AirBrush or RattleCan passes are very short bursts, Or the fact that a spark will not ignite these mixtures as they blow past, Or, are all fans really prone to catching on fire as frequently as proposed by these few? Somebody tell Obama!!!!!!!!!!! Many many things here to consider and 13 years proves this all for me and others that use my Table Top Paint Booths. It's just like teaching school, you give them the information and some will learn and some will resist. Some will take the info and run with it to their advantage. In a $200 mail order paint booth you are getting about $50 of real value as the rest is in advertising and profit, so please consider that. The Paint Booth company is not in business to do you a favor. For my purposes doing as much as I do, I need the power of a strong Paint Booth that is easily maintained, not a toy made of plastic or thin metal. Most people don't paint anywhere near as much as I do and a little lightweight Booth may be all they need. I like to build my tools for the long term so they don't break down in the middle of a paying project. There is no right or wrong here, I just have to have tools that operate very well., everybody else can do as they please. I can't help being reminded here of the story with Henny Penny, Turkey Lurkey and Ducky Lucky, The Sky is not falling!!!!!!!!!!! CadillacPat

Thanks Everyone, You'll see in my choice of DieCast subjects that I look for castings that offer lots of body space for rich graphics, hence the term Promotional Customs. This Divco casting is really choice and Jada produces an Oil Tanker, '83 Chevy Silverado Dualley and a Delivery Sedan all of which fit my requirements. My favorites part of a Build are creating the Graphics and Decals and laying down the paint. More Jada castings coming up, CadillacPat

Originality Counts or does it?
CadillacPat replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There might be a confusion between originality and absolute uniquity. If 2 or more Builders finish projects that look similar then absolute uniquity might be compromised, if that matters to someone. But, Who would ever know which Builder had their idea first, if that defines originality. If each Builder A, B or C had the idea then it certainly originated with each of them. If perchance those Models from Builders A B, or C were judged in the same contest then who is to say which one is original. I never think about what someone else is doing when I'm building anything. It doesn't mean anyone is wrong for allowing this to determine what they build, it would just never enter into my mind. I build things for myself and the only one I have to satisfy is me. Contests are great although I don't begin building soemthing to beat the next guy, I build to try and better my last efforts. CadillacPat -
Here's the one I've been using about 13 years spraying HOK products and flushing my guns with Lacquer Thinner, The Bathroom Exhaust fans are quick and easy to change out, The fans cfm empty the booth in less than a second The booth is not constructed of C4 and I do not use natural gas as my air supply for the AirBrush. I just love alarmist remarks against building your own Paint Booth instead of "buying" something that puts bucks in another guy's pocket, The Government even has a booklet of Basic Skills instructing people how to walk by placing one foot in front of the other 2 of the ducts running outside before the third fan was added, Manufacturers do not want possible consumers to build anything themselves. However, good old American know how prevails. CadillacPat

You ever see Young kids buy models,
CadillacPat replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Brandon, Yes, G&G (foremost a Train Shop) is over in the Village, they've been there 50 years but everything I used to get there I buy online cheaper, and M&M (RC Shop) is over behind the Galleria on Post Oak but I didn't care for their service or their supplies. I don't care for the attitude at Larry's either over even Race's place in Spring Cypress. First time I ever saw dead people working behind the counter. The best place in Houston, Hobby Island run by Dave, sold out a few years ago. CadillacPat -
Real nice Mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've done some great work laying those Decals down over compound and complex curves. CadillacPat
-
Great paint and very clean build. Real good pics too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the kind of job where the scale is hard to determine (a good result) and comes very close with the doors and lid closed, to being hard to tell if it's real or a Model. CadillacPat

CadillacPat replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When is the last time you even saw a Hobby Shop. They're all gone in Houston but one, Larry's Hobby Shop and it's way out on the edge of town, and a couple of RC Shops in town. In a city of 4.2 million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I was a kid Mr. Louie's Hobby Shop in Chalmette, Louisiana was the center attraction for all kids. We weren't influenced in the 50's and 60's by gangs, MTV or little tiny screens of dancing pixels. There's very litle individualism in kids today and building Models is not an instant gratification thing. Building Models is a "do" thing and today kids don't have to do anything but look up the answer on the Internet. CadillacPat -
" Route 66 WoodGrain TailDragger with BoneShaker Engine and Racing Champions Wheels " The TailDragger casting comes with a lot of baggage in the form of a rough casting with high ridges and deep casting scars. Jagged edges form the insides of all the window and wheel well openings. Some tender care applied with files, 220 sandpaper and a little MilliPut White or Apoxie White Putty to fill the scars will turn this casting into a smooth shaped body ready to represent those all steel bodied years of the 40's and 50's. Frenching the Headlights by drilling them out and inlaying Rhinetones adds a touch of realism not seen anywhere else. Two identical slots cut out of the hood (using a Jewelers Saw) parallel with the raised center line allow access for insertion of the BoneShaker engine stacks. Lastly the body is rubbed down with #3 Steel Wool which knocks down any sanding scratches and leaves a great overall spun texture for good paint adhesion. Primered and then AirBrushed Shimrin White, then SnowWhite Pearl. Decals are applied, masked, and then the whole body is AirBrushed Black. A light sanding all over with some 600 to knock down any slight Decal edges and then the whole thing is ClearCoated with HOK Urethane Clear with a touch of Candy Pagan Gold Intensifier and some Aztec Gold Pearl Powder. The addition of the Candy Pagan Gold Intensifier deepens the Yellows and Browns of the WoodGrain and changes the Black to a Dark Glossy Mahogany Brown. All Products Used Are Exclusively House Of Kolor, Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Notice that the Front Bumper and Grill and the Rear Bumper have been filed, sanded, polished and then buffed to a high lustre setting them apart from the terribly rough factory issue. Center Caps have been AirBrushed with Adhesion Promoter, Candy Pagan Gold, and then Cleared to set off the rims. Interior is shot with Adhesion Promoter and then AirBrushed a BuckSkin mix with Brilliant Gold Pearl Powder. Decals are completely created from scratch and printed on Clear InkJet Decal Paper from Papilio.com Rivet reassembly for a permanent professional finish. Stay Tuned for the Route 66 WoodGrain Fat Fender 40 with BoneShaker Engine and Racing Champions Wheels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CadillacPat

The Candy BrandyWine shot over the bright Red and Gold Graphics gives the whole thing a dark smoky mysterious look. Very subdued but crisp and clear. This car color shifts from Black to a Dark Cherry. When brought into direct sunlight the Pearl Powder explodes with all kinds of color flakes. All Products Used Are Exclusively House Of Kolor, Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stay Tuned for a similar Red bodied version with Turquoise Competition Stripes. CadillacPat
