You wish How far did you get JIm? Mine won't be a true replica as i'm guessing the 'burban used the same chassis as the pickemup and i've shortened my body by about 5 mm in order to get a snug cab to bed fit. I'm thinking panel van with the round bubble windows from an AMT Chevy van. Bubble tops were around in '62 (Roth built the Beatnik Bandit in 1961) so bubble windows would have been possible then even if not popular on vans until later - lets say they are military surplus removed from a couple of bombers.

Re-read my post Andy - i'm saying that AFAIAC you can use a belt driven pump. Just remember it would have been a vee belt. I put razor saw to plastic yesterday and started bodywork. I've decided, as have others here, that a long roof is really the way to go and so will be converting the '60 pickup into one. Pics when I get a bit further and know what works in my head is feasible... It should look something like this

Most of the early drag racers i've built have had fuel pumps driven directly from the cam sprocket through the timing cover. No reason why they wouldn't have rigged up a suitable bracket and driven one with a pulley from the fan belt. Plumb in a return line to the tank to cope with excess pressure on the over-run. A Magneto will spark without a battery but you'd need juice for the starter motor, lights and to warm the valves in the shortwave radio you would be using to communicate your back up team... As I can't have a laptop and access to the internet I will be installing a complete set of encyclopedias, the yellow pages for all states to be crossed, enough large scale maps to cover the continental US of A, a cage or 2 of carrier pigeons, my address book and Rolodex, a pack of cards and a stack of girly mags...

"not building to win"? pish and tosh my good man. We should all be building to win the race from sea to shining sea else it's just a cruise to the beach. You're talking like this was some sort of model car competition... Back to Minilites - every pic of a 1960 Cooper Climax that came up when I googled had those same wheels so that is good enough proof for me. Having done long drives in both big & small cars i'd rather lope along in a big softer sprung car rather than whizz along in a twitchy buzz box.with harder suspension. Having said that, this is a race and I can put up with some discomfort (vibration & jolting & constant steering correction) for the duration. How long do we think it would have taken on 1962 roads? I'm picturing 1962 route 66 as something similar to the current day pretty route between Melbourne & Adelaide. 2 lane black top passing through towns (mostly small - some larger) with a surface of varying quality and state of repair and a mixture of long straights and twisty sections where it passes through ranges of hills.

Back to wheels. Don't just look at drag racing & hot rods & customs. This is a 1960 Cooper Climax GP car Those look suspiciously like Minilite wheels to me. Or these on a 1960 Scarab Mike - are you sure you are in the right thread? That looks like it could be in the Batcave... Nick - that is probably the last vehicle i'd expect to see in the Cannonball Run. And so is an inspired choice! All looking good guys. I've done nothing yet (no change there then) except think about if I can justify ram air induction in 1962...

That '62 looks mean Billy - It'd look even more evil riding on a set of black steelies with trim rings & dog dishes. Andy - Paint for a '55? How about beige & mustard 2 tone - something that would blend right in. Wire wheels were obviously around too back then. I'm toying with using a set of these (fujimi) rims on my "truck". When was the AMT parts pack with all the wheels in it (the one with the TV camera?) first released? There are some Halibrandish rims in there and some chrome multispoke artillary wheelish ones too.

OK, i'm officially taking the plunge. Entry form is in the post (with the cheque ). Contrary to rumours floating about on the interweb I will not be entering in a 1960 Pontiac Bonneville. This is is because getting hold of one on this side of the big wet patch is proving tricky and being a tight git I refuse to pay some of the prices (or postage costs) asked on evil-bay USA. So, I shall be entering in something put together out of this little lot. Now, where's that saw...

Ever Wonder What Flintstone's Top Fuel Studey Streamliner Looks Like Built?
zenrat replied to Danno's topic in Model Cars
I think I may have at least 1 build that would run in that class. Very good job there. If you can't have a laugh when you build why bother? -

She's so fine. The stance is just right - slightly nose up. I got one of these in the queue (Dyno Don version). Anything to look out for? -
Can I see some crazy Drivetrain swaps?!

And I have more... NissCAR (Ford NASCAR) Sunny Vannette (Early Skyline) Grand Camino (GNX) -

OK, i'll bite. Mazdebaker (13B rotary + '53 Stude') 4 cylinder Vicky (Turbo Mustang 4 banger) Bugrolet Forcedes (Mercedes 500SL) -
I just looked up the "mistakes" contained in AG. Amongst the time travelling cars it has in the background are a '67 Chevy and a '73 Olds.

Priming a Mechanical Fuel Injection set up would only be required if the engine had stopped and needed to be restarted. I'm not planning to turn mine off until I reach the end of the run... Does the movie clearly show the engine in the '55? 'Cause didn't they use the same car in 2 lane blacktop and IIRC that had a BBC in it (not justification to use one here, just rivet counting & nit picking).

It's hard to build a bad looking donk out of the AMT 300's early Hemi. It's gorgeously designed. And $50 for a kit? We pay that for new ones so don't complain. I've not yet got my hands on a '60 Poncho to chop up. Better hurry I suppose - only 10 months to go... I've designed it in my head though - nose down, tail up, loud paint, louder engine and a big tank - As those of you who know me will attest I don't do subtle very often. I'll just out run the cops. After all, it's '62, how are they going to get organised to stop us without mobile phones and computers?

I had an epiphany while in the shower. I shall be entering in a 1960 Bonneville which has had a coming together with my razor saw and a Parts Pack. Slight drawback in that I don't actually have the kit... Now, to Evil-Bay. Lets shop!

BTW. '62 was also the first year of the Ferrari GTO. IRL that's what i'd choose to use.

G'day folks. Despite a nagging suspicion that 5 forums is 2 too many i've signed up here just for this build. For those of you who don't know me i've been involved in this all 4 years so far entering the Dustball 500, NissCAR, Swifter Shifters courier van and an un-named Chevy van. I'll build anything I can get my hands on but do have a tendency to get obsessed and build to a theme for a while. Current obsession is 60's Super Stocks. I was planning a '66 Batmobile for the '12 Run but the '62 cut off has put the kybosh on that one so i'll have to find something else. I still have a couple of 50 gal drums left over from last year so maybe i'll just sling them in the back of a '50 3100, plumb them in and overtake y'all while you're fuelling? Although that plan ended in tears (from the burns) last year. Hmmm, Z11 parts for the 409 were available in '62, Chrysler had the 413, Ford the 390 and Pontiac the 421. Mind you, Allison's had been around since WW2... Plenty of time yet to decide as I have to finish off a theme build for a contest in May. See you on the road... Z
