Customer service rant but not what you expect.
jayhkr replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Boy, I can so relate. I work for Toys R Us and lets just say the Holidays aren't so cheerful and delightful. Like I talk to Santa Clause and tell him NOT to make anymore of this years HOTTEST toys. I've been in retail for over 20 years and everyday is a new experience with customers. What consumers need to realize is that retail stores are only as good as their suppliers/manufactures. If they can't supply us with the product that the consumer demands it is not the retail stores fault. But I love to kill those "special" customers with kindness. Just smile, nod and tell them no in the politest, friendliest way possible all the while trying not to throw up. Sorry, as much as everyone would like to believe, the customer is not always right, we just have to make them THINK they are. -
Sounds like a night of dumpster diving is in need to me!

Well my brown box arrived today with: and which I want to try to replicate this from: http://www.ssrfanatic.com/forum/attachments/f6/110996d1318202445-tv-show-storage-wars-barry-weiss-classics-cid_001a01c617e4-66570880-d94d0418-your17oeylz9on.jpg http://www.ssrfanatic.com/forum/attachments/f6/110995d1318202420-tv-show-storage-wars-barry-weiss-classics-barry-20weisss-20custom-20rear.jpg

Just made my first Hobby Towers purchase for a 49' Merc Custom Coupe and a '32 Ford 3-Windowed Street Rod. Since I have never purchased models online or not, I wanted to see if spending $40 after shipping for those 2 is a decent deal or not? $10 for shipping seemed about right so that left each model at about $15 each. Just curious, I have a large "wish list" with them now!! LOL

Holy Cow, he beat me I think! Nice job little man!

I would recommend while you're at wally-world to check out this table: http://www.walmart.com/ip/4-Foot-Folding-Table/7679248 It's similar to what Charlie said but gives you a bit more room to spread things out on when you want to work. The tackle box is a great suggestion to, or you can pick up the "dorm room size" organizer bins that work nicely too. Hope some of these suggestions help.

Kit price @ hobby lobby
jayhkr replied to s10chevypu's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd like to know where you guys get your models for $5-8!!! -
Oh man this brings back memories. My VERY first car was a '77 caprice classic. Baby blue with the good ol' butterfly valve carb! Man that was so much fun in the winter when it got stuck! Believe it or not my mom still has her 1988 Caprice Classic with LESS than 100k on it! (and no she's not that little old lady that only goes to the supermarket) LOL thanks for the memories on that one!

Wow, awesome turn around! Hey quick question for you, how do you get such good shots of the interior up close like that? I always have focusing issues. Well done though!!
-
Good tip there. All this will be utilized on my next build. Thank you!
-
Thanks guys. I did test fit originally, but that was before I mounted the engine to the chassis. THAT'S where I need to be better at is continuously test fitting all the time after I add something to what would go in the engine bay. I'll look into those hemostats. Where did you get yours from, regular pharmacy?

LOL, HOLY ######, I know both of those guys! Good ol' Chip Foose is THE MAN. And Bart, I believe you and I used to work together. Actually you came into my store not horribly long ago, Toys R Us, and we spoke for a while.

Boy those are both sharp! Well done sir, well done! Love the pattern on the paint! Nice effect!

LOL, lets just hope this wasn't a "1 hit wonder" and we'll see what I can do next. Stopped by Hobby Lobby and Michael's today didn't see anything that got my fancy. I might run up to Hobby Haven in a bit to see if they have anything reasonable and catches my eye. If not I have a LONG list of models I'm putting together. Thanks for all the compliments!

Makes me wanna jump in and take it for a spin! Nicely done!

Finally heading to a new dimension (I think)

I like the testor's 2:1 ratio, but have been thinking of doing the HOK 1:3 as Dr. Cranky describes. Probably the best bit of advice is try different things and see what you like best. The nice thing about paint is you can (usually) try it, let it dry and if you don't like it dunk it in a bath like Purple Power or LA's Totally Awesome and try again with something else. That's the beauty about this hobby, it's fairly easy to start over on body before everything is attached! Have fun. -
Ok, so I just got done with my first build in over 20 years and boy was that a trip down memory lane for me. My dad and I used to build these together and I remember how much fun we had. Well one thing that plagued me then is still plaguing me now. Attaching the body to the chassis. I have the dardest time getting the engine in the engine bay, the frame to attach to the chassis that attaches under the body. It seems everything gives me fits. Is there a tip, trick or magic word I need to use or say to make this easier? Also, how do you guys work with the small parts, like the door handles, mirrors, windshield wipers, etc.... I have small hands but I can never seem to get them to stick where I want them to. I'm really looking forward to my next build, choices choices choices. What will I choose.

Thanks guys. Tomorrow's payday so that means a trip to either the LHS, Hobby Lobby or I'll buy one of the models on my list online! Yep the journey has just begun!
-
Yep, I'm quite happy with my Paasche H, but I find myself during my downtime wishing I had a dual A/B so I can doodle sketches like I used to. Have fun though, that's the #1 rule in anything we take up as a hobby!

I know it's not perfect but I like it. I'm always looking for ways to make it better so all comments are welcomed (just don't slay me). Thank you to everyone who has helped me with this build, it is truly appreciated! Till the next one!

Well after a few mistakes, some lessons learned, and a lot of cursing I have finished my first build in over 20+ years! This was a great practice build for me and learned a lot. However I can see that I have lots to learn if I will ever want to come close to some of your all's stuff! A lot of you are an inspiration to me so without further ado, I give you my 1959 Chevy Corvette: Just to recap, these are a few pictures I took BEFORE watching Donn Yost's videos: Not very pretty at all. This was even after a clear coat. So I dunked it in LA's Totally Awesome, then, after that didn't work to well I dunked it in brake fluid and started over. While that was going on I continued the build: Then it came time for the main event. And wow was I impressed. The only thing I wasn't really happy with was using Future as a clear coat. (Should had listened to Donn better) so on my next build I'll try the other stuff. But I'm still really happy. It actually was better before I put the body on the chassis as I ALWAYS have issues with that part. I can remember 20+ years ago I still had issues with that. (I'll need some tips on that, but I'll post to a different section first) Ok, have I built up the suspension long enough for everyone......? Here's the final product with varying focus shots for appeal!

I was off on the year by 2. It's actually a 1947 Caddy that I saw on the show Storage Wars. Here are a few pictures of what I would like to build in the future! http://cdn.celebritycarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/Barry-Weiss-Cadillac.jpg Seriously who wouldn't want a car like that!

Not to take away from them, but does anyone recommend other places for decals? Since I'm just getting back into this, I'd like to start setting up a repertoire with a few business when I get fully up and running. Over the next few months I hope to be getting a nice size collection of models going and defiantly want to start looking at 3rd party decals and not the ones that come in the box. It's sad to continue to hear about these little places falling off the charts due to everything that is going on in our economy. I firmly believe that we will prevail, we always have and always will. It's just a shame that we have to loose some really good business along this tough route first though.
